Did Carnival ban clacking fans, hip hop music on cruises? What to know.
Those include an alleged ban on clacking handheld fans – used for dancing to the song 'Boots on the Ground' – in parts of the ship, a ban on the 'Wobble' line dance, and limits on rap and hip hop music onboard. Some on social media said they felt the cruise line was unfairly targeting Black customers.
'Unfortunately, certain media outlets have blown this matter out of proportion,' Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. 'We have always had a wide variety of entertainment options and for the last several years we have communicated our expectations about guest behavior.'
What recent changes did Carnival make?
Carnival did ban Bluetooth speakers in late 2024. The cruise line also introduced a 1 a.m. curfew for guests 17 and under – if they are not accompanied by an adult – but that policy dates back to 2023, Lupoli said.
Jasmine Ramnarine, who runs the travel and lifestyle YouTube channel A Rich and Jazzy Life with her husband, Richard, said she thinks the narrative that the cruise line is cracking down on onboard behavior is not necessarily a bad thing – even if it's not entirely accurate.
That can help counter negative attention from viral videos of fights among passengers, for instance, she said. 'At the end of the day, it's their business, you know,' she told USA TODAY.
Did Carnival ban clacking fans and the 'Wobble' line dance?
No. Handheld clack or clap fans are not banned, though they are prohibited in nightclubs and other indoor dance floors for safety reasons as of June, Lupoli said. However, Ramnarine said that particular change did feel 'pointed towards Black people' given the song and dance's popularity within the Black community.
'And as someone who leads a community of Black cruisers on cruises, it's kind of disappointing because there's so many other things that are more important,' she said. Carnival did not immediately respond to an additional request for comment on Ramnarine's experience.
The 'Wobble' is not banned either, according to Lupoli. The cruise line recently refreshed its Sail Away playlist, so guests may not hear the V.I.C. song there, but it is still played at other events.
The cruise line also expanded its nightclub theme nights, Lupoli added, but still plays hip hop and rap among a variety of other genres.
Richard Ramnarine said he felt Carnival could have been more vocal about dispelling false narratives circulating online. 'This is the age of social media, where videos are going to go viral and people are going to believe and only hear what they're hearing and seeing on social media when they're not hearing (enough) from Carnival's leadership,' he said.

Handheld Showdown: Steam Deck, Switch 2, ROG Ally — which console gets your vote?
The best handheld gaming consoles took off in a big way after the Steam Deck launched in 2022. Now, major companies like Asus, Lenovo and MSI are fighting to overthrow Valve's popular device. This is the best time for handheld gaming, and it should get better in the coming years. Given the popularity of handheld gaming videos on Tom's Guide's YouTube channel, we're launching a new limited series called Handheld Showdown. In Handheld Showdown, my colleague Paul Antill and I compare handheld devices and let you pick which ones move forward in the bracket. Matches include the Lenovo Legion Go S versus the Asus ROG Ally, the original Steam Deck versus the Steam Deck OLED, and more! Make sure to watch the first episode embedded above and vote for which console moves on! Here are the match-ups you can expect to see and vote on in the coming weeks. Handheld Showdown's bracket of eight was determined by our audience's ranks and input from our gaming experts. Now, we need your help to decide which four will move on to the semi-final round. That will lead us to the final two devices, and of course, the grand champion. Here are the matches, so please vote for the gaming handheld you think should win in each match-up: This is arguably the strangest match-up we have, given how these machines serve different audiences. That said, they are both handhelds, and their differences make them ideal for specific people. Do you want a robust gaming library or are you more interested in playing Nintendo games? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The Steam Deck OLED might seem like the easy winner here since it has a fancier panel, but the original Steam Deck shouldn't be overlooked since it still provides great value. Choosing between Steam Decks isn't as easy as it looks! The Lenovo Legion Go S is the first non-Valve gaming handheld with SteamOS, which certainly gives it a distinct advantage over other devices. However, the original Asus ROG Ally, with its ability to play almost all Windows 11 games, is still a fan-favorite. The Lenovo Legion Go is the most unique Windows handheld in this contest due to its large size and removable controllers. That said, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and its Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU offer better performance than its aging AMD-powered rival. So those are the match-ups we'll have for Handheld Showdown! After you've voted, make sure to share this story with the folks in your gaming circles so that the best picks move on. Also, come back next week to vote on the semi-finals round! A set of biodegradable ultra-soft face towels inspired by the much pricier Clean Skin Club version — a lot of folks with sensitive skin and acne *swear* by these, particularly because it helps prevent exposing their skin to bacteria that may collect in ordinary reusable towels. E.l.f's Lash XTNDR Tubing Mascara, a GODSEND for anyone with thin or fragile lashes (and a much cheaper alternative to the viral $26 Blinc version). This uses lightweight ~tubing~ technology to wrap around lashes and give them a natural-looking, smudge-proof extension so good it almost looks fake. The real boon, though, is how easily the "tubes" slide off in clean, easy swipes at the end of the day when you're washing your face — absolutely no smudging, over-scrubbing, or special eye makeup removal products required. A set of Victoria's Secret–inspired seamless "invisible" underwear so soft and stretchy your butt will want to *sing* when you slide them on. This is a true holy grail underwear that doesn't show, doesn't ride up, and somehow manages to look cute all at the same time. A three-pack of vintage-inspired polarized sunglasses for anyone who needs to stock up on a few "these look like Ray-Bans, but I won't cry into my Baja Blast if I accidentally leave them in the Taco Bell parking lot" pairs this year. These are especially handy because you can match the subtle prints to whatever 'fit you're wearing! An affordable cult-favorite luxury-scented candle with a scent reminiscent of Le Labo's $90 Santal 33 version, and a throw so satisfying that reviewers can't stop gushing about it. Nothing wrong with smelling a lil' ~~expensive~~! An affordable, Lululemon-esque longline sports bra so comfy, supportive, and versatile that reviewers love it both for outdoor workouts, gym use, *and* errand running — especially since it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the usual $68 version. This is designed to be supportive without being too compressive, with lightweight fabric that keeps you breezy in the heat. A set of golden bracelets that will give ~quiet luxury~ vibes at "I want to pay rent this month" prices. Reviewers especially love these mix-and-match sets because they look like expensive versions from Cartier — the middle one is giving the $8,000 "Juste Un Clou" and the studded one is giving the $6,000 "Love Bracelet!" An easy-to-apply one-hour (!!) self-tanner so much cheaper and more effective than its competitors (like the $46 St. Tropez) that your medicine cabinet will laugh at the old versions you used. This vegan blend is easy for beginners to use without streaking or uneven patches, and although the tan is instant, the fade is nice and gradual. Billion Dollar Brows Eyebrow Powder to fill in your brows as naturally and realistically as the $23 Anastasia Brow Duo version for less than half the price. Reviewers are stunned by how effective this is and how long it lasts, especially at such a low price point. A Peripera Ink Velvet Lip Tint reviewers compare to Charlotte Tilbury's $35 Pillow Talk and Nars' $22 Velvet Lip Glide. This one gets bonus points for the softness of the matte color, how buildable and long-lasting it is, and how it doesn't crack or leave skin feeling dry. A pair of pretty pastel wireless over-the-ear headphones crafted to look like the $399 AirPods Max, so you can still enjoy the comfort and chic style of their iconic headphones without shelling out hundreds of dollars. These feature premium cushion padding, a built-in mic with the ability to take calls, 10 hours of playtime per charge, and surprisingly decent noise blocking for the price. A suuuuper easy to use Beachwaver B1 Rotating Curling Iron with automatic curling technology similar to the $599 (!!) Dyson Airwrap that will not only create (LITERALLY) effortless curls, but is designed with a ceramic heat barrel that will make them hold up the whole day. The Face Shop's Rice Water Bright Foaming Facial Cleanser, a gentle, cult-fave Korean beauty product reviewers swear by as an alternative to the pricey $40 Tatcha Rice Wash. This hydrating cleanser will remove waterproof makeup and sunscreen with ease, has an ohhhh-so-satisfying lather, and will leave skin moisturized after use. A plated, jewel-embedded ring you can buy yourself as a little treat if the $1,250 Cartier Love Ring is decidedly out of your budget. Dare I say this version is ... prettier than the designer one? Monday Haircare Dry Shampoo with all the oil-absorbing, refreshing power of its competitors, *plus* added keratin for protection against frizz and breakage. A set of super affordable hydrocolloid nose pore patches (compare to the $16 Mighty Patch equivalent) that will make you go "boy HOWDY" when you see how much gunk collects on them overnight. Reviewers swear by these for gently lifting out sebum from pores and pimples and minimizing their appearance! A pair of high-waisted "Secretsculpt" biker shorts with some real booty-lifting action (AND NO FRONT SEAM!!) that will have you admiring your reflection in shop windows all summer long. Psst — reviewers compare these to the WAY more expensive $64 Lululemon Align shorts, and these come in a whopping 11 colors!! An affordable sleeveless exercise romper you will be SO glad you bought on days when the sun is trying to bake you like cookie dough. These are medium-compressive, soft, breezy, and SUPER easy to throw on when your brain is too fried to match a top and a bottom in the heat. Bonus — these are comparable to Aerie, Abercrombie, and Hollister versions that can go for three times this price! A Lululemon-inspired mini wristlet wallet set that looks just like their $50 version, and will also easily hold cash, cards, and lip balms, so you don't have to deal with the whole muss and fuss of a purse if you're going on a walk around the neighborhood. Plus, you know what they say — keep your friends close and your beloved lippies closer. L'Oreal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray Mist so darn phenomenal at its job that one reviewer calls it "hairspray for your face," and several compare it to the $34 One/Size setting spray at triple the price. This ultra-fine formula will spray on lightly and leave a natural finish, but just one spray is designed to LOCK IN your look for 36 hours. A slouchy open-back yoga top reviewers compare to a popular mall brand's $48 version 👀. If you're looking for a loose, soft, breezy option that won't overheat you in the summer, this "workout in the front, party in the back" shirt has got your name on it. A set of Bala Bangle-inspired wrist and ankle weights to get your ~fitness~ on — these serve all the same cuteness and function without the $55 price tag. Not to mention this has a TON more colors available to match your 'fits. A set of lightweight, oh-so-dainty ruffled pajamas inspired by the $89 Piyama version. Revievers are in loooove with this set for summer, saying the fabric is so high quality that it feels like linen. If you're looking for breezy warm weather loungewear, this adorable set fits the bill! A simple faux diamond tennis bracelet to add a touch of sophistication to any outfit without the price of name-brand versions like Swarovski (even though reviewers agree this looks like the Real Deal 👀).
