LANGKAWI, June 19 (Bernama) – While covering the ASEAN Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025), here, the writer spotted a familiar face from nearly a decade ago — a former teacher from college days.
Dr Kamaleswaran Jayarajah, who once taught Chemistry and Biology at Kolej Tingkatan Enam Desa Mahkota which is the writer's former alma mater and SMK Chenderiang, Perak is now based at the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat in Bangkok.
Originally from Tanjung Malim, he is the eldest of three siblings and the first in his family to pursue studies beyond his hometown.
With eight years of teaching experience under his belt, followed by four years in the Ministry of Education and three years in the regional education sector, he now contributes to regional policy efforts in Southeast Asia.
Moderating one of the forum's sessions titled 'Leveraging on Technology and Innovative Strategies to Reduce OOSCY Barriers', Kamaleswaran said the event's focus strongly resonated with his current work.
'Every country in ASEAN faces unique challenges,' he said when met here and stressed the importance of collaboration, teacher empowerment and cultural sensitivity to address education gaps.
ASEAN education policymakers had gathered here, at the Jewel of Kedah, from June 17 until today for the ASEAN Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025).
Earlier, Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek stated that the Langkawi Joint Statement on Out-of-School Children and Youth (OOSCY) was agreed upon by ASEAN Education Ministers as a guiding framework to overcome challenges in access to education.

Trump Urges Senate To Cancel August Recess To Speed Up Nominee Confirmations

ISTANBUL, July 20 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- US President Donald Trump urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Saturday to cancel the Senate's traditional August recess, asking lawmakers to expedite confirmations of his executive and judicial nominees, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. 'Hopefully, the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!' Trump wrote on Truth Social. bootstrap slideshow The Senate is currently slated to confirm six Trump nominees on Monday and advance his candidate to lead the Drug Enforcement Agency. The nominations include Emil Bove, a Justice Department lawyer nominated to a federal appeals court judgeship, and Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News host, nominated for US attorney for the District of Columbia. Bove faces opposition from Democrats following a whistleblower complaint alleging he advised the Justice Department to defy court orders on migrant deportations, a claim he denies. Additionally, Trump's recent nominees for the National Labour Relations Board aim to restore a quorum to the panel, which has been nonfunctional since January after Trump dismissed its Democratic member. -- BERNAMA-ANADOLU

MADANI Mind Transformation Workshop Trains Participants As Elements Of Community Change

KUCHING, July 20 (Bernama) -- Participants of the MADANI Mind Transformation workshop in Petra Jaya have been urged to be elements of change in their respective communities, by living and practising the spirit of MADANI Malaysia in their daily lives. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said Sarawak should be the best example of a united, progressive and competitive MADANI society. 'As we know, the MADANI Malaysia concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is an integrated and holistic effort to make all policies and implementations in Malaysia more humane, which is constantly improved through deliberation and feedback from the people. 'In this MADANI Malaysia concept, its implementation is based on strong unity and emphasises justice that should be felt by every diverse racial entity or ethnic group in this country,' he was speaking at the closing ceremony of the workshop here, today. The text of his speech was read by the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said in the context of Sarawak, the collective approach becomes more significant because cultural and ethnic diversity is the main strength of the state. 'Every race, whether Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Chinese, Indians and others need to join hands as 'Team Sarawak' to realise MADANI's aspirations. "We need to remember that this mind transformation is not just a government programme, but a social movement that needs to be embraced and practised in daily life. Start with small steps at home in educating children, interacting with neighbours and contributing to the local community," he said. The three-day Mind Transformation Workshop since Friday, involved 54 participants from the Tupong, Samariang and Satok state constituencies.

Over 100 Ministers And MPs Take Part In Ukhuwah MADANI Programme In Port Dickson

PORT DICKSON, July 20 (Bernama) -- Over 100 Unity government leaders, including Cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament, took part in a community gotong-royong this morning as part of the MADANI Government Ukhuwah (brotherhood) Leadership programme in the district. The initiative, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's MADANI administration, aims to foster closer ties between leaders and the people in a relaxed, inclusive setting rooted in shared values and solidarity. It also seeks to normalise the practice of leaders engaging directly with the public, creating a continuous culture of ground engagement and offering citizens a platform to voice their needs, concerns and ideas. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, along with several Cabinet members and MADANI MPs, arrived at Kampung Sawah at 8.45 am and were briefed by the village head before spending about 25 minutes at the site of the Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI event. The delegation comprised Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad; Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri; Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, and Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. They were later joined by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, and several other Cabinet members, who arrived at 8.30 am at the Kampung Teluk Pelandok Fishermen's Jetty to take part in a jetty painting activity and engage with residents. Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun was also present to show support, spending nearly 30 minutes at the jetty with the leaders and community members. Saifuddin described the programme as a meaningful experience that allowed him to connect with residents, gain insights into their daily activities and explore the area's economic potential. 'This programme allows us to engage directly with the local community. We got to know some of their products, such as homestays. With this kind of approach, it becomes clear that MADANI is not just about developing the nation, but also the individual,' he told reporters.
