Stirling boss has sunny outlook despite sweltering Hamilton opening defeat

Daily Record15-07-2025
The Binos were edged out by League One Accies in their Premier Sports Cup opener on Saturday - as all eyes turn to their Dumbarton clash.
Forthbank was bathed in the summer sunshine for Stirling Albion's competitive opener on Saturday... and boss Alan Maybury insists the outlook for his side is still bright despite defeat.

The Binos fell to a 2-0 loss against Hamilton Accies in a tight Premier Sports Cup Group E contest, with Hamilton pulling away in the second half due to an excellent Connor Smith strike followed up by a Russell McLean own goal.

Despite the expectations before kick-off - with Hamilton expected to be among the favourites to bounce straight back up to the Championship - Stirling were very much in the game until and even beyond Smith's opener.

Maybury bemoaned some key opportunities that went begging for his side in potentially securing a result, but praised his players' commitment in blazing hot conditions.
The Irishman said: 'I think there was nothing in the game, to be honest.
'It's really hard against a full-time team, with the sticky pitch and the weather, but we did a lot of good things that we've been working on.
'We had the best chance of the first half with Ross Cunningham and it's a different game if that's goes in and I felt they got their goal out of nothing.
'We had a great chance with [Dale] Carrick as well with the diving header so going forward we created enough in the game, it's just tainted a little for me because I think the goals are preventable on our side.

'If we want to be better than last year, then they are the sort of areas we have to improve on.'
The group stage action continued last night, with Stirling making a visit to familiar foes in Dumbarton for a contest that could act as an early litmus test for their ambitions in League Two.

The Stirling squad was still stretched slightly for the Hamilton match, with striker Ryan Shanley serving a suspension for a sending-off in the competition for Falkirk last season, while Dale Hilson picked up a knock in a training match.
But Maybury admits his squad looks much healthier at this stage than it did 12 months ago - and they will be gunning for full points at the Rock.
'We're setting up to try and win every game in this section; it's really difficult because we're the fifth seed in this group with Dunfermline and Hearts as well as Hamilton who have just come down from the Championship so it's a tough section', the Stirling boss added.

'The plan is for us to give a good account of ourselves, for us to do what we want to do, that was the messaging before today, making sure we use the ball under pressure well, to have the structure we've worked on both with and without the ball.
'We want to go there and win the game.
'We played them in the Stirlingshire Cup, albeit with reduced time, and did well there but they have strengthened and are further along with their pre-season - as are we.
'It will be a good test to see where we're at, working on those structures and organisations which were good today and where I'm hoping for another improvement on Tuesday.'

Ollie Watkins' telling exit comment as Man Utd add Aston Villa star to three-man wishlist

Manchester United have expressed an interest in Ollie Watkins but Aston Villa insist their player isn't for sale, even though the Englishman has made it clear he will not accept a squad role Ollie Watkins has made it clear he will never be one of those players who his "happy to sit on the bench" after Aston Villa rejected an advance from Manchester United to land the striker. ‌ The Red Devils are on the lookout for a No 9 and have shortlisted three players with the England international among them. Villa signed Watkins several years ago after he impressed in the Championship and he's since proven himself in the Premier League. ‌ Villa, who lost Jhon Duran back in January, have made it known that they have no interest in selling their forward despite interest from those on the red half of Manchester. Watkins will hope to return to the club's first choice striker after a difficult few months to end the season. ‌ Ironically it was the loan arrival of Marcus Rashford from United that saw Watkins' playing time suffer as a result. Rashford has since left and joined Barcelona on loan, but it means Watkins will face less competition as things stand. Last term Villa enjoyed a run to the last eight of the Champions League, beating Club Brugge, before running PSG close in the quarter-finals. For that tie Unai Emery opted for Rashford over Watkins - which was not well received. The ex-Brentford striker made it clear that was not a role he wanted. Watkins said last season: "He's the manager at the end of the day and you've got to respect his decision, but I'm not one of those players that's happy to sit on the bench. I was fuming I wasn't playing and I let him know that." Emery also had Marco Asensio as a loanee for the second part of the season, but he and Rashford have since left. Villa are yet to make any major attacking additions this summer and the Spanish manager has rejected the prospect of Watkins leaving with Arsenal keen on him back in January. Emery said: "I don't want (to sell Watkins). It is good news to have offers from other clubs. We want to keep our sporting objective through the players we have in the squad." He also maintained: "Watkins is our striker." United are also thought to have considered moves for PSG's Randal Kolo Muani and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. Ruben Amorim though has claimed that he would be happy to go on with his squad as it stands, claiming: "If I start the season with this squad I will be happy."

Lennon Miller 'could play against Rangers' but I expect answers, says Motherwell boss

Jens Berthel Askou doesn't expect a resolution in the next few days Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou won't rule Lennon Miller out of playing against Rangers in their Premiership opener, but says he expects answers next week. ‌ Miller has been absent for the Premier Sports Cup games and was missing again tonight as Motherwell drew 1-1 with Hertha Berlin in their final pre-season warm-up. ‌ The youngster has been linked with a big money move elsewhere, but Askou said: 'I don't expect his situation to be resolved in the next few days. There's nothing new on Lennon Miller so right now he's still our player and he's back in little bit of training and I look forward to seeing him on Monday. ‌ 'There is a possibility of him playing against Rangers but again we will have to get some answers next week. 'It's not ruled out.' ‌ Askou was pleased with the game against Hertha Berlin, but says the calibre of the opposition means it wasn't just a 'friendly'. He said: 'I'm absolutely pleased with the performance. I think it's maybe a little bit of an understatement to call it an exercise, because I think it was a very competitive match, with two teams who really tried to play the game on their terms. 'There was momentum for us, for them, and a little bit from us at the end. ‌ 'It ended with a draw, I think that felt really good for us, because we earned that, the possibility to get a draw, and it's about quality and effectiveness at the end. 'We wanted to see how far we are, in terms of trying to play our style of play against a team of very high quality, and I think that gave us some answers. 'We still have a job to do, but we're also very happy with the level we displayed at times, not just in moments but in several phases, and I'm really impressed with the boys and how they were able to find some extra in the reserve tank, when the normal tank was completely empty, after a tough couple of weeks, and actually go for it in the end.' Askou says the game was good preparation for Rangers next week and said: 'That's the closest we get to the standard of Rangers. I know they had a fantastic result the other night and a fantastic team riding on new energy with a manager who has new ideas,'

Wrexham ‘make ambitious approach' for former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen

Wrexham have made an approach for Christian Eriksen, according to the former Manchester United midfielder's agent. The 33-year-old Denmark international is without a club after his contract with United expired at the end of the 2024-25 season. And now the Championship newcomers have reportedly made an ambitious proposal to sign him. Eriksen's agent Martin Schoots told the Daily Mail: 'Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like (chief executive) Michael Williamson there. 'But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe. 'There are some contacts going on but it has to suit both sides.' Signing Eriksen, who has won 144 caps for Denmark and has also played for Tottenham and Brentford in the Premier League, would be a major statement of Wrexham's Championship intent. Eriksen made 35 appearances in all competitions for United – scoring five goals – and has also played for Ajax and Inter Milan in his distinguished career. Wrexham's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have showed plenty of ambition ahead of the Red Dragons' return to the second tier of English football after a 43-year absence. They have already added Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward, left-back Liberato Cacace, midfielders Lewis O'Brien and George Thomason and forwards Josh Windass and Ryan Hardie to their ranks after a third consecutive promotion. It has been reported that Wrexham, who begin their Championship campaign at Southampton on August 9, have broken their transfer record twice this summer.
