2026 Hyundai Elantra N TCR Takes Aim at the Honda Civic Type R

Car and Driver2 days ago
Hyundai is bringing out a special-edition Elantra N in Canada to celebrate the company's TCR series wins.
The Elantra N TCR Edition features a big wing and upgraded brakes, and it's only available by special order.
There's not much stopping the Elantra N TCR Edition from coming to the United States too.
In 1983, Hyundai began its first sales in North America with the humble Pony—a 70-hp, four-door hatchback. This was not a new strategy, as Honda had also used Canada as a test market with the S600 in the 1960s, long before the N600 arrived in the United States, and Mazda had done likewise with the rotary-powered R100. While the U.S. and Canada have very similar automotive markets, sometimes the latter sees automakers dipping their toes in the water before diving in on a larger scale, and if Hyundai Canada's latest offering is anything to go by, an enthusiast-focused special could be in the future for south of the border.
It's called the Elantra N TCR Edition, and it's basically the 911 GT3 of Hyundais. Starting out with the already excellent Elantra N, Hyundai has added forged wheels and upgraded front brakes via four-piston monoblock calipers. There's also a truly massive swan-neck adjustable rear wing as a calling card.
Hyundai
Inside, the TCR is swathed with Alcantara touch points, periwinkle blue seatbelts, and a host of other cosmetic upgrades. Though it is available in limited quantities and must be specially ordered, Hyundai Canada will still allow you to pick between a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic transmission, as well as four exterior colors (two fewer than the standard Elantra N).
Speaking of which, the TCR Edition doesn't get any more power than the regular Elantra N, so that's 286 horsepower in overboost mode from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. That's plenty, and Hyundai's N products are all about offering chassis capability that allows drivers to extract every bit of speed that a turbo four can provide. Adding upgraded brakes and a bit more aero should mean that this version of the Elantra is capable of setting faster lap times.
Hyundai
Last month, Hyundai claimed its fifth straight TCR class victory at the Nurburgring 24-Hour race, finishing first and second on the podium. The effort included Canadian racing driver Robert Wickens, a former DTM and IndyCar driver who survived a life-altering crash at Pocono Raceway in 2018, yet has returned to top-level motorsports despite being paraplegic.
The original Hyundai Pony was not a great car, and it actually became the butt of jokes north of the border, much like the Yugo did in America. Despite the shaky start, Hyundai has grown to become a world-class brand in both markets, and the launch of the TCR Edition Elantra in Canada just shows how confident the company is these days.
Hyundai
Priced about $3500 more than the standard Elantra N, the TCR Edition seems like a bit of a bargain for some genuinely motorsports-infused performance. There's no reason Hyundai's U.S. operations couldn't put a similar program into place, especially as the cars are special order only, and you wouldn't have to convince dealers to stock them. You can bet Hyundai USA will be watching how the TCR Edition sells in hoser-land. Here's hoping the U.S. gets it too. And if not, well, sorry, eh?

India's Mahindra logs 20% jump in SUV sales to dealers, rivals post declines

By Meenakshi Maidas and Nandan Mandayam (Reuters) -Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra logged a 20% year-on-year jump in SUV sales to dealers in July on strong demand for newer models and electric SUVs, while its rivals struggled, data from the firms showed on Friday. Most Indian carmakers, barring Mahindra, are struggling to grow sales amid a broader industry slowdown in the world's third-largest car market. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Having gotten off to a slow start to 2025, manufacturers are counting on a pick-up in demand from late August, buoyed by festivals, as well as tax cuts and lower interest rates. Still, for the year to March 2026, they expect industry-wide car sales to grow just 1% to 2%, compared to a 2% growth in the previous year. Domestic sales for Hyundai India and Tata Motors slid by a tenth each in July, as the companies suffer from stalling demand for their small cars and older SUVs – a segment which contributes two-thirds to their dispatches. Successful launches over the past year at Mahindra have drawn customers away from Hyundai and Tata Motors, with Mahindra leaping past the two to the no. 2 spot in the domestic car market, long held by Hyundai. However, Tata Motors, which leads sales of electric vehicles in India, reported a 42% jump in EV sale volumes to a record 7,124 units. The EV leader's dominance has been challenged over the last year by Mahindra and JSW MG Motor. Meanwhile, market leader Maruti Suzuki reported that sales to dealers were largely flat. Although sales of small cars such as the Swift rose for the first time in six months, this was offset by a decline in SUV sales. Maruti's July performance was hurt by price hikes to upgrade models with six airbags, its sales and marketing head Partho Banerjee said in a call on Friday.

2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid's sharp creases stand out in the three-row mid-size SUV segment. Though its styling may hint at genuine off-road-conquering ability, its core strength is transporting up to seven passengers in comfort and delivering improved fuel economy compared with its nonhybrid sibling. A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder works in cahoots with an electric motor for a combined 231 horsepower, all funneled through a six-speed automatic transmission; front-wheel drive is standard, but adding all-wheel drive is just a box check away. Acceleration is merely sufficient—the nonhybrid model is quicker—and its handling is ordinary, but the Santa Fe Hybrid's price premium is reasonable for the increased efficiency. Expert Tip: We've acknowledged that the Santa Fe Hybrid won't blow you away with power, but shoppers who desire a bit more punch in their mid-size hybrid SUV are encouraged to check out the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. It posted a 5.6-second 0 to 60 mph time in C/D testing. What's New for 2026? A new SE base model joins the lineup. The Limited trim sees the addition of standard second-row captain's chairs (a bench seat is still optional) and dual wireless chargers. The SEL gets third-row USB ports, and the top Calligraphy trim adds a Pecan Brown Nappa leather interior. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid starts at $37,645 and goes up to $49,945 depending on the trim and options. SE $37,645 SEL $39,935 Limited $46,945 Calligraphy $49,945 0 $10k $20k $30k $40k $50k $60k $70k $80k While the higher trims offer many nice features and there's a new SE base trim, we maintain that the SEL represents the best value of the bunch. It adds a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, wireless device charging, third-row air vents, and more for a reasonable upcharge. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is an $1800 option across the board. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Hybrid Powertrain: Turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and one electric motor, 231-hp combined Turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and one electric motor, 231-hp combined Transmission: 6-speed automatic 6-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive All Santa Fe Hybrids are powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder which is assisted by an electric motor for a combined 231 horsepower. That's a little more powerful than the 226-hp setup that was offered in the previous-generation model. In the real world, acceleration is sufficient for the type of casual driving most buyers of three-row crossovers will do, but the Santa Fe occasionally feels sluggish when merging or passing on the highway. The Santa Fe Hybrid's road manners are subdued, but the ride is comfortable, and engine noise is well-isolated from the cabin unless you're really hustling. All models come with a six-speed automatic transmission; front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. 0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 7.8 seconds In Comparison: Though the base 245-hp Grand Highlander Hybrid is a closer competitor to the Santa Fe Hybrid, the Toyota's available 362-hp Hybrid Max model knocked off the 60-mph run in just 5.6 seconds in C/D testing. The nonhybrid Santa Fe is also quicker than the hybrid, getting to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. View Exterior Photos Hyundai Towing and Payload Capacity The Santa Fe Hybrid is rated to tow 2000 pounds. If we were dead set on the Santa Fe, but occasional towing was in the gameplan, we'd go for the nonhybrid Santa Fe XRT, as it's rated for up to 4500 pounds. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: N/A N/A EPA City Ratings: 35-36 mpg 35-36 mpg EPA Highway Ratings: 34-35 mpg While the EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid yet, the 2025 model with front-wheel drive earned ratings of 36 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. We don't expect any changes for the 2026 model year. We haven't had the opportunity to take a Santa Fe Hybrid on our 75-mph real-world highway fuel economy test, but we will update this section as soon as we do. For more information about the Santa Fe Hybrid's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: Seating is ample and comfortable. Side bolsters are more than sufficient for a family SUV, and the seats are bisected by a large center console with storage and space for wireless charging for devices if so equipped. The base SE gets cloth seating, the SEL and XRT have faux leather, the Limited has leather, and the Calligraphy has Nappa leather. Second Row: A bench seat is standard on the base SE, and captain's chairs are standard on the SEL or higher, though you can spec a bench on the SEL if desired. Second-row space is accommodating for adults. Third Row: The third row is serviceable but lacks the ease and convenience of the first two rows. Access is decent with the easy forward-folding captain's chairs, but legroom is tight compared with some larger three-row SUV competitors. Cargo Capacity: Cargo volume is sufficient, with 16 cubic feet behind the third row, 41 cubes behind the second row, and 80 cubes with both folded. The Grand Highlander Hybrid has slightly more space, however. View Interior Photos Hyundai Infotainment and Connectivity Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Audio System: 6-speaker stereo (standard), 12-speaker Bose stereo (optional) All trims get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, two 12-volt outlets (one front and one rear cargo), and XRT and above trims get a 110-volt outlet. While the base SE gets four USB ports (two each in the first and second rows,) the SEL and up get an additional pair for the third row for a total of six. Wireless charging is standard on the SEL, and the XRT trim and above get two wireless charging spots. Calligraphy models also have a standard head-up display. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features All Santa Fe models come standard with a host of driver-assistance features, but more advanced tech, including an adaptive cruise control system with a lane-centering feature, is optional. For more information about the Santa Fe's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard Safety Features: Automated emergency braking with pedestrian alert, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring Automated emergency braking with pedestrian alert, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring Optional Safety Features: Blind spot collision-avoidance assist, park distance warning, adaptive cruise control Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Among mid-size SUVs, the Santa Fe Hybrid and its corporate cousin, the Kia Sorent,o offer the longest standard warranty terms. The Hyundai holds an advantage over the Kia in this area, though, thanks to its generous complimentary scheduled maintenance program. Auto review: Genesis G80 gets comfortable in its own skin

GAYLORD, Michigan - Hyundai's luxury brand, Genesis, announced this year its intent to enter the world of elite motorsports in 2026 - joining the big boys in the IMSA Weathertech/WEC World Endurance Championship's Hyper class. It's a natural progression for a brand that makes the terrific G80 sedan that I just stormed Michigan's twisties with. The fastback sedan is a looooong way from the G80 I first tested in 2015. Cresting a hill on M-32 west of Gaylord, I floored the throttle - accessing all 375 horsepower of the twin-turbo V-6 engine in front of me. Standard all-wheel drive translated 391 pound-feet of torque to the road and the big sedan surged forward. Big as in 4,600 pounds, which is hardly a lightweight in the midsize luxe aisle. But in SPORT PLUS mode, electronic suspension firmed the ride to reduce body roll. I rushed a series of S-turns like Lions running back Davd Montgomery crashing through the line of scrimmage. The G80 held firm, the eight-speed transmission holding a higher gear as I rocketed out of the last turn and onto a brief straight stretch. BRRRAAAAAGH! The engine's growl opened into a full-throated roar. Bring on Cadillac, Porsche, Acura, BMW and other luxury hypercar brands! A decade ago, the 2015 G80 was a pretender. Affordably priced, it bore an Audi-like grille, Acura-like V-6 engine and BMW-like infotainment system controlled by a rotary dial. The 2025 model is no pretender; Genesis has come into its own. They did it the old-fashioned way - poaching talent from the competition. Belgian designer Luc Donckervolke came over from Lamborghini and gave Genesis its own design language. It's hard to miss. Rather than dual racing stripes over the hood like a Dodge Viper or Ford Mustang, Donckervolke wrapped the cars with a distinctive dual-lighting signature. At auto shows, the Genesis team likes to pose next to their creations with two fingers held out horizontally - scissor-style - to echo the design theme. The G80 got a lotta looks on my trip up north. As I cruised down Bridge Street in Charlevoix, I watched the heads of the high school football players swivel as the Genesis cruised past. In a parking lot, a couple circled the car. It's not just the swept sportback and dual headlights/taillights that get noticed - the bold shield grille gives the fascia presence. And lots of air to feed the beast within. Genesis hired BMW M Division chief Albert Biermann to tune its cars for performance. My Sport Prestige tester's twin-turbo V-6 is a step up from the base model's 300-horsepower turbo-4. Thus equipped, it is aimed squarely at all-wheel-drive performance sedans like the Audi S6, BMW 540i and Cadillac CT5-V. Those brands have entered top-drawer motorsports, too (Genesis will be going head-to-head in the Hypercar class with Bimmer and Caddy). With the G80 Sport Prestige, Genesis is commanding a top-drawer price as well. The Audi S6 leads this fleet of comparably equipped all-wheel-drive performance sedans with an eye-watering sticker price of $85K, but the Genesis is not far behind at $78,250. That's a healthy 10 grand north of the 540i M-Sport and CT5 V-Series. The latter is one of my favorite performance sedans and raises the bar for 2025 with a 36-inch dash screen run by state-of-the-art Google Built-in like its Lyriq EV sibling. And you thought big screens were just for EVs? G80, too, takes design cues from the Hyundai group EVs. A striking 28-inch hoodless display stretches across the dash - complemented by a head-up display. Cadillac was a HUD pioneer, and the Genesis follows with useful information like Android Auto directions, speed limit and adaptive cruise control mph so I didn't have to take my eyes off the road. The Genesis has also taken a cue from General Motors' excellent steering wheel ergonomics. Raised toggle buttons made it easy for me to adjust ACC and volume controls without glancing down. The Genesis's console ergonomics were another story. Following in the footsteps of BMW, G80 offers dual controls for the infotainment display: touchscreen as well as a fat rotary remote dial. Unfortunately, the rotary dial is the same size as the rotary automatic gear shifter on the console - and they are directly in line with one another. Turn the rotary dial left to turn down the volume, and ... Ooops! I shifted the car into NEUTRAL! Turn the rotary dial to DRIVE, and ... Oops! I turned up the volume! I learned to be deliberate in choosing the two functions, but - though it would throw off the aesthetic appeal of twin rotary dials - drivers would be better served by a steering stalk or T-shifter to avoid confusion. Biermann's team has clearly been working with the G80 in the gym. I enjoyed taking the big dog off the leash on the M-32 twisties. But competition at this level is ferocious, and the Cadillac not only employs impressive electronic suspension dynamics - but offers toys like the steering-wheel-based V-button, which allows drivers to instantly summon their favorite performance settings. Alas, the M-32 rollercoaster is all too brief, and I spent most of my journey north on I-75. The G80 aims to make the long stretches drama-free with a good adaptive cruise system that not only deploys a bubble of lane centering/distance-keeping safety systems - but also didn't nanny me every 15 seconds with a warning to pay attention. The system combines a camera - Cadillac Super Cruise-style - to monitor your attention while also sensing steering input. The G80 would even switch lanes automatically for me at the tug of the turn-signal stalk. But here, too, it trails the '25 Cadillac and its optional Super Cruise system - one of the industry leaders in autonomous systems. Hands-free, automatic lane changes, lane centering. The works. The new kid on the block dresses to kill and my G80 sported a striking red interior. My friend Suzie slipped inside. "Ooooh, I could get used to this," she smiled. "I love that red leather smell." Genesis is turning heads and it intends to keep it that way. At the 2024 New York Auto Show, it set its sights on the Audi RS, BMW M5 and Caddy CT5-V Blackwing super-sedan models when it rolled out a bright-orange G80 Magma extracting over 500 horsepower from the familiar twin-turbo V-6 powerhouse. A variant of that engine is likely to power the IMSA Hypercar. As the name "Genesis" implies, the luxury brand is just getting started. Next week: 2025 Volvo EX30 2025 Genesis G80 Vehicle type: All-wheel drive, five-passenger luxury sedan Price: $58,350, including $1,250 destination charge ($79,030 Sport Prestige as tested) Powerplant: 2.5-liter, turbocharged, inline 4-cylinder; 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 Power: 300 horsepower, 311 pound-feet of torque (I-4); 375 horsepower, 391 pound-feet of torque (V-6) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Performance: 0-60 mph, 5.2 seconds (Motor Trend); Top speed, 140-155 mph Weight: 4,587 pounds Fuel economy: EPA 16 mpg city/24 highway/19 combined; 367-mile range Report card Highs: Striking design; upscale interior Lows: Easy to confuse shift dial with volume dial; gets pricey Overall: 3 stars ____ Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
