Fossilized tracks trace ancient animal behaviors in Oregon
About 50 million years ago, a small bird waded along a lakeshore in what today is central Oregon. A worm wriggled at its feet. The bird appeared to probe the silty earth with its beak, once, twice, three times, looking for food. On the fourth try, the bird may have found something. Or perhaps it missed again and moved on.
This glimpse into prehistory is possible thanks to two tiny fossil footprints and the dogged work of an undergraduate intern at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument with a particular interest in ancient tracks, known as trace fossils.
'Trace fossils definitely do tell stories,' said Conner Bennett, lead author of a study describing the find and three others that was published in February in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica. 'We don't have the body of this bird. It's more just like we're left with its actions, its behaviors. It's like trying to study ghosts.'
Trace fossils can fill in gaps in the fossil record, said Dr. Anthony Martin, professor of practice in the department of environmental sciences at Emory University in Atlanta. 'This paper has tracks that are definitely from a bird of some sort, and then tracks that are definitely from a lizard,' said Martin, who researches modern and fossil traces and was not involved in the research. 'So those are showing that those animals actually were there, even though there's not a single bone or feather or any other bodily evidence of those two types of animals being there.'
The science of trace fossils isn't as 'sexy' as studying bones, teeth and other physical remains, Bennett said. Fossilized tracks don't get as much attention. That's part of the reason he got the chance to undertake this research in the first place. Bennett, now a graduate student in the department of Earth, environmental and planetary sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, applied for a summer internship at John Day in 2022. The national monument holds a rich paleontological record from the Eocene Epoch — part of the age of mammals — which lasted from about 56 million to 34 million years ago.
Bennett combed through the park's online catalog of finds and came across several animal track impressions that had been found decades ago but never studied. He'd previously worked with 3D modeling software to describe dinosaur tracks and endeavored to give the unidentified animal tracks the same treatment.
The analysis could help researchers form a better understanding of the prehistoric ecosystems of Oregon. Bennett said he hopes his findings will inspire other researchers to look for trace clues they may have previously overlooked. 'I'm sure it's going to happen soon where people are like, 'Oh, it's really interesting to learn about fossil tracks. Let's pull this stuff out of our archives and start looking at it.'
While interning at John Day, Bennett took hundreds of overlapping photos of four sets of fossilized tracks, each only centimeters in size. He fed the pictures into the modeling software, which created 3D representations that could be blown up, zoomed in on and scrutinized in greater detail than the fossils.
In one, there were tracks that reminded him of a small shorebird, such as a plover. There aren't bird fossils in John Day, he explained — the bones are fragile and hollow and don't hold up well. But it would make sense that there would be such birds near the lake that once covered the area where the tracks were excavated.
There were also small, round indentations near the tracks. At first, Bennett and study coauthor Dr. Nicholas A. Famoso — the head paleontologist and museum curator at John Day — thought they could be caused by raindrops, which can leave impressions in the fine grains of shale and clay the tracks were found in. But there are usually many raindrop impressions, and here there were only a few, and only near the footprints. The researchers wondered whether the bird had made them with its beak. Bennett went online and quickly turned up a video of modern plovers pecking into the ground, hunting for food. The connection seemed clear to the research team.
Not only did the trace fossil confirm the previously unproved existence of birds in the area tens of millions of years ago, but it also could paint a picture of how the birds foraged in the shallow water — much the way they do today. And to complete the picture, the fossil contained evidence of what the bird was feeding on or trying to feed on: the squiggly trail of a worm on the move. 'We can track a feeding behavior over 50 million years. That's pretty cool,' Bennett said.
Dr. Danielle Fraser, head of paleobiology at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, who was not involved in this study, expressed a similar sentiment. 'This is a really cool example of a behavior that would otherwise not be apparent,' she said.
Martin suggested an alternative interpretation: that the divots could have been made by water droplets falling off the bird's body as it came out of the water. 'I've seen that a lot on the Georgia coast,' he noted.
A separate specimen showed three footprints made up of five thin, splayed digits and clawlike impressions, suggesting some small lizard once darted along the lakeshore. There were even marks showing where the lizard dragged its feet. The researchers found this exciting because there are few examples of tracks from small lizards in North America in this period, and no body fossils have been unearthed at John Day.
'Too few paleontologists are trained in the recognition and interpretation of trace fossils and so a lot of this information is overlooked,' said study coauthor Dr. Daniel I. Hembree, professor and director of undergraduate geology studies in the University of Tennessee department where Bennett is studying.
The traces are the only evidence of small lizards' existence at John Day during the Eocene.
'The fossils of the bird and lizard are the first evidence of those groups of animals from that period of time in our fossil record,' Famoso said. They 'help to paint a more complete picture of what life was like' during the Eocene.
Bennett also analyzed two other trace fossils — from mammals from a more recent time period. One showed prints of a three-toed ungulate, possibly a rhinoceros or ancient tapir. The other: the 29 million-year-old tracks from what the researchers believe to be some sort of saber-toothed cat.
The absence of claw marks suggested that the animal's claws were retractable, like those of modern cats. And the gait appears similar, too, Martin said. The way the rear paw print only partially overlaps the front means the animal may have been walking at a normal pace. 'This is the kind of understep gait that I see in my cats at home,' he said. 'I get kind of excited when I see something that looks so familiar.'
Famoso noted that both sets of prints were found in an ash layer, which means the animals walked across an ash-laden landscape after a volcanic eruption.
'Sometimes fossils are stored in collections until new technologies or methods are developed that can better study them,' he added. 'These fossils were collected and added to collections between 1979 and 1987, but it took until 2022 for us to get a good study out to describe the specimens.'

Now, researchers say that eating any processed meat and other foods leaves Americans at a heightened risk for chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer. The conditions result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people each year. 'Habitual consumption of even small amounts of processed meat, sugary drinks, and trans fatty acids is linked to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease and colorectal cancer,' Dr. Demewoz Haile, a research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, told CNN this week. Analyzing data from more than 60 previous related studies, the researchers found that eating processed meat – as little as just one hot dog a day – was associated with at least an 11 percent average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 7 percent increase in colorectal cancer risk. Those who drank a sugar-sweetened beverage had an 8 percent average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 2 percent increase in ischemic heart disease risk. The study builds on years of research tying processed foods to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. The Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting these foods and drinks, including sodas, hot dogs, and sausages. Although, researchers say it remains unclear exactly what aspects of processed foods pose potential health risks. It could be due to inflammation, Dr. Minyang Song, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan Schoo of Public Health, told CNN. He was not involved in the latest study. Processed meats also often contain chemicals known as nitrates nitrites that serve as a preservative and give the meat its rosy color. 'Nitrates convert to nitrites, and in the stomach's acidic environment, nitrites interact with certain components concentrated in meat to form N-nitroso compounds, which are potential carcinogens,' according to Harvard Medical School. Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, points out that processed meats contain other additives and are high in sodium, which is a risk factor for high blood pressure and heart disease. Dr. Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the institute who was not a co-author of the new study, previously found that poor diet is responsible for more deaths globally than tobacco, high blood pressure, or any other health risk. "Poor diet is an equal opportunity killer," he said in 2019. "We are what we eat and risks affect people across a range of demographics, including age, gender, and economic status." Haile was the lead author of the study, which was published on Monday in the journal Nature Medicine.

Eating more of this ultraprocessed food is actually good for you and the planet, experts say
Researchers have linked a diet high in ultraprocessed foods, like hot dogs and french fries, to Parkinson's disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and premature death. But, it turns out, some ultraprocessed foods may not be that bad for you after all. A new report on ultraprocessed plant-based meats, by the Good Food Institute and PAN International, is touting the benefits of leaning on the food products, despite a recent decline in their popularity. 'Doctors and dietitians are reluctant to consider alternative proteins when advising patients on nutrition because they view these foods as ultraprocessed,' nutrition scientist Roberta Alessandrini, director of the Dietary Guidelines Initiative at PAN International, recently told CNN. 'Yet if carefully chosen, these foods can be a valid and helpful way to shift toward more plant-forward diets, which are good for people and the planet,' she said. While 'meatless' meat products are designed to replicate the taste and texture of meat - and some burger patties even 'bleed' - fake meat generally has a better nutritional profile than red meat, Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told The New York Times earlier this year. 'The fat composition of beef is so undesirable for health that it's very easy to be better than that,' Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the school, told CNN. Willett noted that any important nutrients in beef, that plants lack, can be added to the meat alternatives. 'Animal products not only have too much saturated fat but lack polyunsaturated fat, fiber and many of the minerals and vitamins available in plants,' he said. But there are downsides. The Australian George Institute found in 2023 that although plant-based meat products are generally healthier than real meats, they can be higher in sugar. Another issue is the high sodium content. Red meat has less salt, but many would still season a steak before eating — sometimes consuming the same amount of salt as people eating higher sodium products, according to a randomized clinical trial in 2020. And while the higher cost of plant-based meats may have consumers still largely reaching for the real stuff, there is another hefty price tag that comes with the latter. The meat industry contributes 16.5 percent of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions globally each year, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. Cutting back on meat products would have significant impact on curbing the ongoing global catastrophe, which already costs communities in the trillions of dollars each year in extreme weather-related disasters. 'There's such great urgency related to climate change, environmental degradation and public health that we need to give people as many options as possible, including plant-based meat alternatives,' said Willett. Healthcare Access, Geography Predict HIV in Black Women
Limited healthcare access and sociostructural factors were stronger predictors of HIV than behavioral risk factors among Black women in the southern United States, based on modeling data from more than 300,000 women in or near Atlanta, Georgia. The findings were presented in a late-breaker study at the International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science. Nonbehavioral factors such as structural and social determinants of health can complicate HIV risk assessment, wrote Meredith Lora, MD, of Emory University, Atlanta, and colleagues. Previous risk prediction models have underperformed in Black women, whose HIV risk is approximately 20 times that of White women, the researchers wrote. To better assess HIV risk in Black women, the researchers used machine learning to create a model that analyzed electronic medical records data from all women treated at a single center in Atlanta between 2012 and 2022. The study population included 333,263 women; 617 (0.19%) had incident HIV diagnoses and 89% of those with HIV identified as Black individuals. The model included features with a prevalence of 5% or higher in the electronic medical records data and included novel structural determinant features and healthcare utilization features. Overall, the top predictors of HIV included younger age, Black race, residing in high HIV incidence zip codes, and at least one change in phone number or address prior to HIV diagnosis. In addition, women who underwent more HIV screening tests were more likely to be diagnosed with HIV, and women with HIV were more likely than those without HIV to seek care in an emergency department (ED) vs primary care or women's healthcare settings. Although more women with HIV tested positive for sexually transmitted infectious compared to those without HIV in the 2 years before diagnosis, 'seeking sexual health was more important to the model than STI positivity,' the researchers wrote. The model achieved a test area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.90 and area under a precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.14. The appearance of frequent HIV testing as a predictor of risk suggests the presence of undisclosed risk factors that may merit further investigation, the researchers noted in their abstract. EHR models designed for racially diverse female populations may identify more candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but that is not enough, the researchers emphasized. 'Evaluating how these models are implemented to support PrEP uptake and behavior change is critical for real-world impact,' they concluded. Assistance in Risk Assessment The current study is important given the traditional and historical difficulty of women in the United States in predicting their own risk of HIV, said Monica Gandhi, MD, director of the University of California San Francisco Bay Area Center for AIDS Research, and a professor of medicine at UCSF, in an interview. Gandhi cited a recent study from the CDC showing that more than 2.2 million individuals in the US need PrEP, but only 336K have received prescriptions. 'Women may not be able to adjudicate their own risk of HIV, as that risk depends on the risk in their male sexual partners,' said Gandhi, who was not involved in the current study or the CDC study. 'Machine learning using electronic medical records [EMR] can make risk prediction more accurate by reporting both health and social factors,' she noted. The current study identified predictors of HIV risk using extracted EMR data, that the healthcare system may be able to mitigate, she said. 'I was surprised by the fact that seeking sexual health was a stronger predictor of HIV than STD positivity, which indicates that women actually are more aware of their risk for HIV in the US than suggested in previous studies that usually involved smaller sample sizes, Gandhi told Medscape Medical News . 'I was also surprised that women with frequent changes in address or phone number had higher risk,' she said. This suggests mobility as a risk factor, which has been identified more commonly in sub-Saharan Africa, she noted. However, Gandhi was not surprised by the preference for ED care or the increased HIV risk among Black women vs other races, both of which have implications for HIV prevention, she said. The preference for sexual health care in the ED setting in the study population suggests that the ED is an important setting in which to perform STD testing and start PrEP or set up an individual with HIV prevention services, said Gandhi. 'Designated PrEP services for women in historically Black neighborhoods are indicated, and women who are mobile and change their address or phone number frequently should be counseled on HIV prevention modalities, specifically PrEP,' she added. Looking ahead, qualitative research is needed to ask a subset of women with HIV who presented to the ED for sexual health services why they chose the ED; this could help inform how to re-engage women in care, Gandhi said. Additional research on women's knowledge of PrEP and whether women with HIV were offered PrEP in the past also would help identify more opportunities for HIV prevention, she said.
