Friend of man who fell over outfield wall during Pirates game at PNC Park charged with buying him alcohol

Yahoo21-05-2025
The friend of the man who fell from the outfield stands at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game last month has been charged with providing him alcohol at the game, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Ethan Kirkwood, 21, reportedly told investigators that he bought two beers for his friend, 20-year-old Kavan Markwood, during the Pirates' game against the Chicago Cubs last month. Kirkwood is now facing two misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to the Post-Gazette.
Markwood jumped up to celebrate a hit during the seventh inning of the April 30 game, and he ended up falling over the outfield railing and down more than 20 feet to the warning track at PNC Park. He remained motionless for several minutes while players and officials realized what had happened.
He was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. Markwood suffered injuries to his skull, spine, lungs, ribs and brain. He has since made 'remarkable progress' and has been moved out of the intensive care unit. He is able to stand, walk and respond to questions, and he has started therapy for his brain injury.
Security footage from the stadium, according to the report, showed Kirkwood buying two 24-ounce Miller Lites before the game's first pitch. He was carded when he made the purchase, but footage later showed Kirkwood and Markwood with one beer each after Kirkwood walked away from the kiosk with both of them. About an hour later, per the report, Kirkwood was seen walking back to purchase two more beers.
Footage from behind Markwood's seat showed him shirtless and visibly energized right before the incident. At one point, he was reportedly seen taking his shirt off and pouring beer on himself, and he landed with much of his bodyweight on the railing after jumping up to celebrate the hit — which is what prompted him to lose his balance and fall forward.
Kirkwood has been charged with minor drinking violations in the past, per the report, first at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2022 and again in 2023 at Slippery Rock University. He pleaded guilty to both sets of charges. Markwood is a former first-team all-conference football player at South Allegheny High School, and he spent time on a pair of Division II rosters.

Bailey Falter's Gem, Spencer Horwitz's First Career Slam Pushes Pirates to Sweep

This article originally appeared on Three days after hitting rock bottom with a home sweep at the hands of the pitiful Chicago White Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates rebounded with a three game sweep of the American League-leading Detroit Tigers, winning 6-1 on Wednesday, July 23. Helping the Pirates (42-61) to victory, Spencer Horwitz provided his first career grand slam and Bailey Falter put together his longest start since the end of May, seven innings of one-run ball. Horwitz's blast, a 416 foot, 106.1 mile per hour missile to center, put Pittsburgh ahead 5-0 against Tigers rookie Troy Melton. While Detroit managed to sting Falter for one run in his seventh and final inning, they never came close to threatening the Pirates' lead. Carmen Mlodzinski closed the series out with two scoreless innings, fanning three batters in the process. Click here to read more from Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Spencer Horwitz hits 1st career grand slam as Pirates defeat Tigers 6-1 for series sweep

Spencer Horwitz hit his first career grand slam and Bailey Falter matched a career-high with eight strikeouts to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-1 win and sweep of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Horwitz drove a two-out cutter from Troy Melton (0-1) 416 feet to centerfield to make it 5-0. Andrew McCutchen opened the scoring in the first with his ninth homer of the season. Bryan Reynolds led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Oneil Cruz in the third inning. Falter (7-5) gave up one run on four hits without issuing a walk in seven innings, going more than 5 1/3 for the first time since May 31. Lasting five innings in his major league debut, Melton allowed six runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Matt Vierling provided Detroit's lone run with a single in the seventh that scored Spencer Torkelson. After walking Joey Bart to load the bases with one out in the second, Melton had a way out of the jam when he struck out Isiah Kiner-Falefa on three pitches ahead of Horwitz. He started with a cutter in the dirt before coming back with another that Horwitz took deep. The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10 games since July 9. Tigers: RHP Reese Olson (4-3, 2.71 ERA) will start Thursday to open a four-game home series against Toronto. LHP Eric Lauer (5-2, 2.80 ERA) will go for the Blue Jays. Pirates: RHP Mike Burrows (1-3, 4.70 ERA) will take the mound Friday as Pittsburgh stays home for three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
