Wrong-way driver charged in central Minnesota crash that critically injured high school senior
The Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, man was charged Thursday with four counts each of criminal vehicular operation resulting in great bodily harm and criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm.
He is accused of driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 10 in Sherburne County on the night of April 9. After driving the wrong way for several miles, he collided with another vehicle while turning right from Highway 10 onto 70th Avenue.
The criminal complaint says a Minnesota state trooper responding to reports of the wrong-way driver, but unaware of the collision, struck the 71-year-old man's vehicle, which then hit two teens who were outside of their car, inspecting damage from the initial crash.
As a result of the crash, one of the boys, 17-year-old Blayke Mostad, suffered life-threatening injuries to his brain and spinal cord. His brother, 15-year-old Braxton Mostad and their friend were also injured, as well as the suspect and the trooper.
Charges say a review of the trooper's squad video shows the vehicles involved in the first collision were not visible to the trooper unit immediately before impact. The complaint notes that the intersection where the crash happened is unlit and uncontrolled.
A blood sample taken from the suspect after the incident found Trazodone, a medication that can cause dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and blurred vision, in his system, according to the complaint.
The suspect allegedly told investigators he realized he was driving the wrong way right before the initial crash.
In late June, Blayke Mostad's family shared in a CaringBridge post that he transitioned from the PICU to inpatient rehab.

Police close key Merseyside roads after multi-car crash
A number of cars were involved in a major crash on a Merseyside road. Police received reports of the multi-car pile-up at around 2.45pm today (Saturday). Merseyside Police said the crash happened at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way in Stockbridge Village. Officers attended the scene and were forced to put road closures in place as investigations into what had happened were carried out. The force is now appealing for information from members of the public who may have witnessed the crash. A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following a reported road traffic collision in Stockbridge Village this afternoon, Saturday 26 July. "At around 2.45pm we received a report that a number of cars were involved in a collision at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way." Images and footage shared with the ECHO showed a number of police vehicles in place at the junction where the crash happened. One of the vehicles in the footage is a mobile police station unit, formed out of a police van. Signs and cones can be seen in the area indicating a road closure. The police statement did not include details of whether anyone was injured. 3 hospitalized, 1 arrested after crash on Lodge Freeway in Detroit, police say
Three people are in the hospital, and one person is in custody after a two-vehicle crash on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit early Saturday. Michigan State Police said the incident was reported around 2:55 a.m. Investigators say a 38-year-old man was driving on the northbound side of the freeway near Hamilton Avenue when he rear-ended a car. The driver of the car that was hit lost control, resulting in the vehicle hitting a concrete wall and then rolling "multiple times," police said. One of the passengers was ejected from the car during the crash. All three people riding in the vehicle that was hit were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Police said troopers at the scene noticed signs of impairment in the 38-year-old man. He was subsequently arrested and had a blood draw performed on him. The freeway was closed for around two hours following the crash.
