Great escape at Old Trafford: Shubman Gill leads the way, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar seal gritty draw for India
TimesofIndia.com in Manchester:
Fifteen overs left, drinks in the middle and
Ben Stokes
walked towards
Ravindra Jadeja
with his hand extended for a shake. The England captain was ready to end the game as a draw but Ravindra Jadeja and
Washington Sundar
didn't move an inch. So didn't captain
Shubman Gill
in the change room.
Jadeja was in striking distance of his individual hundred and even after Stokes insistence on shaking the hands, the all-rounder maintained, "I can't do anything". The writing was on the wall but it was India's time to have some fun after a long grind. And they did as both Jadeja and Sundar scored their respective hundreds and then finally the shake hands happened.
In the backyard of the team which hates the D word, Shubman Gill and Co's great escape - a fighting draw - at Old Trafford will taste as sweet as a comprehensive W.
Five hard fought sessions and four fantastic knocks later, the visitors not only stay alive in the series but will have their tails up going into a mouth-watering finale at The Oval next week. The Manchester Test was nowhere close to India's reach at the half-way mark but the last two days saw them stage an extraordinary fightback with the bat to enforce the draw.

Bowling was flat, tactics were flatter and the start with the bat on Day 4 pushed them further back but the response from KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja deserves a lot of credit.
For a side which was reduced to 0/2 in the first over of their second essay to lose only two more in the remaining 143 overs, is an insane effort and frustrated England for five long sessions, and forced them to settle for only their second draw under the combination of captain Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
India vs England rain, weather forecast: Can Shubman Gill-KL Rahul pull off stunning draw?
They tried everything in and out of the book to make an inroad but nothing worked. It was the right-handed pair of Gill and Rahul on Day 4 before the lefties Sundar and Jadeja stood like a rock on the final day of the Test.
It was a reflection of their match temperament, game awareness and the gumption to bat out time against an opposition which just hates to settle for a draw in the whites.
These were individual batting masterclasses stitched together in two daddy stands but something which the dressing room desperately needed after ending up on the wrong side of the 2-1 scoreline post the Lord's Test. They haven't been outplayed or outsmarted in the series so far but the inability to close out the small moments, which have had a big say in the match, have hurt them.

Who was the standout player for India in the Manchester Test?
Ravindra Jadeja
Washington Sundar
Shubman Gill
While they are still far from an ideal Playing XI - mostly due to injuries and availability issues - but the exhibition of grit in the last two days in overcast Manchester will do their confidence a world of good. A lot was said about Gill's success overseas but here is after four Tests sitting with four hundreds next to his name and a tally of 732 runs. The two failures in Lord's and in Manchester first innings got the tongues to wag again but he shut the traps for good with a statement ton which is arguably his finest till date.
Captaincy pressure, questions on tactics, scorecard reading 0/2 but the youngster quite literally shut the outside noise and put in an old-fashioned grind to set the base for batters to follow. There were nervy moments, a couple of drop catches, blows to the body but it was all worth it as it allowed his side to have the only favourable result at that stage.
There was a tricky period after the wickets of Rahul and Gill in the first session but the response from Sundar and Jadeja was as compact as India would have liked.
Jadeja made the early life count and used all his experience to counter whatever was thrown at him. Four fifties, one hundred and it has been a phenomenal series with the bat for Jadeja and he has been the crisis man for India lower down the order.
A victory was out of the picture the moment they dished out an ordinary effort with the ball and it was all about saving the game from there on. With Jadeja behind the wheel on the final day, not only did they fashion that but also did something which not many expected this side, undergoing transition under a 25-year-old captain, to do - stay alive after four Day 5 finishes.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Dale Steyn backs Mohammed Siraj to deliver for India, makes big prediction
Dale Steyn predicts Mohammed Siraj will claim five wickets in the crucial fifth Test against England, especially with Jasprit Bumrah likely absent. India trail 2-1 in the series, needing a win to level. While Siraj's average improves without Bumrah, maintaining his energy throughout the match remains a key challenge. South African cricket legend Dale Steyn has predicted that Mohammed Siraj will take five wickets in the upcoming fifth Test match against England at the Oval. This comes as India's main bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the crucial game. India currently trail 2-1 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Steyn made his bold prediction on X, stating simply: "Siraj to take a fifer in the 5th Test." The prediction gains significance as India desperately needs a win to level the series. Bumrah's absence comes after showing signs of fatigue in the drawn fourth Test, where his bowling speeds noticeably dropped. He had initially been scheduled to play only three matches during this England tour. Dale Steyn's post on X referring to Mohammed Siraj ahead of fifth Test between India and England. (Screenshot) Siraj has emerged as India's most reliable Test player in recent years. He holds the record for playing the most Test matches for India in the 2020s. The team's bowling attack will likely be strengthened by Akash Deep's return from injury, while Arshdeep Singh will make his Test debut , as was reported by . While Siraj's overall Test average of over 30 has drawn criticism, his performance significantly improves when leading the attack without Bumrah. In 15 matches without Bumrah, Siraj maintains an impressive average of 25.20, which might explain Steyn's confidence in him. The biggest challenge for Siraj will be maintaining his energy and intensity. He has played every match of this long tour, and India need him at his best to achieve their goal of levelling the series 2-2 at the Oval. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. India vs England 5th Test Playing 11: Massive changes in both sides for the Oval Test today
India 5th Test Match Predicted Playing 11 vs England, Full Squad: India will be looking to avoid a series defeat at the Oval as they go into the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy trailing 2-1. They have momentum with them, having drawn the fourth Test against all odds. However, they may have to get used to the fact that they are likely to be without two of their most consistent players of the past five years with Rishabh Pant injured and Jasprit Bumrah set to sit out. Captain Shubman Gill didn't make any clear suggestions as to whether Bumrah will play the fifth Test or not in his press conference on the eve of Day 1. However, it is certain that the Indian team sticks to its decision of only playing their pace spearhead for three Tests, it could mean that they could potentially have to make two changes in their fast bowling lineup. A report from Sandeep Dwivedi, The Indian Express' man on the ground in London for the Oval Test, mentioned the changes that India are likely to make for the fifth Test: Karun Nair to replace Shardul Thakur; Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah miss out. Gill said that Akash Deep is fit to play and so he becomes the obvious replacement for Bumrah. Meanwhile, Anshul Kamboj made a rather forgettable start to his Test career so it is likely that he will make way. Gill said that India asked Arshdeep Singh to get ready, while cushioning that statement up by saying that a final call on the playing eleven will be taken only after they take a look at the pitch later in the day. Pant's obvious replacement is Dhruv Jurel, who will finally get to bat in the series after filling in behind the stumps for most of the last two Tests. It also means that India will be reluctant to let to go of any kind of batting depth. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja — after their gritty centuries they scored to power India's fight at Old Trafford — are obviously set to remain in the team. India predicted XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna England (announced XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue Squads: India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Dhruv Jurel(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Anshul Kamboj, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Karun Nair, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, N Jagadeesan, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope(c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue, Liam Dawson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer

India vs England 5th Test, London Weather Report: Will rain play spoilsport during IND vs ENG Test at The Oval?
The Oval in London (Photo byfor Surrey CCC) With England leading the series 2-1, Shubman Gill's India must win to level it 2-2 and share the trophy. However, as India prepare for the 5th Test at The Oval in London, all eyes are not just on the pitch and players, but on the skies. Looming over the highly anticipated contest is an unpredictable London weather forecast. According to the latest London weather update, rain could play spoilsport across all five days of the IND vs ENG 5th Test Match. 13:11 Shubman Gill press conference: Defends Gautam Gambhir, lashes out at curator; on India Playing XI Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The Oval weather report indicates cloudy skies with light rain expected daily. Temperatures are set to hover between 14°C and 24°C, with high humidity (around 88%) and wind speeds up to 13 km/h. These overcast conditions could heavily favour the swing bowlers, adding a new layer of complexity to the game. India comes into this clash riding a wave of momentum after an epic fightback in Manchester, where special centuries from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, along with KL Rahul's gritty 90, helped secure a dramatic draw. However, injuries are a concern. Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be rested, with Arshdeep Singh or Akash Deep expected to debut. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Poll Which team do you think has the advantage in overcast conditions? India England Both have an equal chance. For England, Ben Stokes is out due to a biceps tendon injury, and Ollie Pope will captain the side. Adding to the drama is the tension over the pitch itself. The Oval pitch appears green, favouring seamers, though some grass may be trimmed before play. Since 2019, all four innings here have averaged under 300 runs, pointing to bowler-friendly conditions. If the rain holds off, fans are in for a cracking match. But with the London weather forecast looking grim, the India vs England weather update might prove just as important as the toss. Fingers crossed that the rain stays away from this thrilling series finale. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
