Break even: Centurion Rahul; Pant, Jadeja keep India in contention

LONDON: KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant did exactly what the situation demanded. They batted together for more than 32 overs - 194 balls to be precise - adding 141 runs for the fourth wicket to keep England bowlers at bay in the third Test here at the Lord's Cricket Ground.
They started cautiously as they stitched together an unbroken 38-run partnership from 59 balls at stumps on Day 2. For India to get closer to England's first innings total of 387, the duo needed to see off the morning session on Saturday and they almost did that. Remarkably enough, this all was done with the wicketkeeper-batter Pant still feeling the pain in his left index finger, which he hurt on the opening day and walked off the field only to return with a willow in his hand.
Unlike their English counterparts, the duo made sure they did not go into shell and it all began with the first ball of Day 3. Jofra Archer, starting the proceedings for the hosts from the Pavilion End, sent one down the leg which was guided for a four by Pant. If the first boundary was assumingly a gift from the pacer, the second one, only three balls later, was indication of Pant's intent. The Delhi batter stepped out to hit Archer's delivery bowled at 140kmph for a four in front of square.

India's assistant coach all but confirms Jasprit Bumrah will play 4th Test against England in Manchester

India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, on Thursday, all but ended the speculations around whether Jasprit Bumrah will play the fourth Test match of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England. India are currently 1-2 down in the series, having lost the opener in Leeds last month and the third match at Lord's last Monday. Their only win came in Birmingham earlier this month. Rishabh Pant and teammate Jasprit Bumrah at The County Ground for a training session ahead of the fourth Test cricket match between India and England, in Beckenham(PTI) Before the Test series began, the BCCI had confirmed that Bumrah would feature in only three matches to manage his workload. Head coach Gautam Gambhir backed the plan, choosing to rest the pace spearhead for the second Test in Birmingham, despite growing calls to retain him after his sensational performance in the series opener at Leeds. In Bumrah's absence, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep rose to the occasion, each claiming a five-wicket haul as India clinched a dominant 336-run win to level the series. However, following India's 22-run defeat at Lord's in the third Test, experts once again called for Bumrah's inclusion in the do-or-die Test match at the Old Trafford, which will begin next week, and the team management paid heed to the request this time. Speaking to the media on Thursday after India's first training session for the fourth Test, Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed Bumrah's inclusion. "We'll make that call in Manchester. We know we've got him for one of the last two Tests. I think it's pretty obvious the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him," he said. If India stay true to their word, this will be Bumrah's first appearance at the Old Trafford. India have yet to win a Test match in Manchester. In nine attempts at the venue thus far in history, they lost on four occasions to England, while five others ended in a draw. The last time India were due to play in Manchester, the match was cancelled after a Covid outbreak in their camp during the tour in 2021.

"Would Drop Nitish Reddy And...": Ex-India Star Suggests Big Changes For 4th Test vs England

India faced a shocking 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at Lord's, London. With the win, England took 2-1 lead in the five-match series. India were chasing a target of 193 when they lost back-to-back wickets and the onus fell on the shoulders of Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder was joined by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the battle but India got bundled out for 170. As Shubman Gill and co gear up for the fourth Test, former batter Dilip Vengsarkar suggested two big changes in the team. Speaking to Revsportz, Vengsarkar stated that he would drop all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar to bring in the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. "I would drop Nitish Reddy and perhaps one more player to make room for Arshdeep. I think Siraj and Bumrah should keep their places, but Reddy could make way. Kuldeep Yadav could also replace someone like Washington Sundar. You need five bowlers in a Test match to win it. If your six batters can't put up a good total, the bowlers need to take responsibility. You can't win a Test match with part-time bowlers," Vengsarkar said in an interview with RevSportz. "I would pick Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Arshdeep is a good left-arm bowler who can move the ball in the air and off the wicket, which is crucial in English conditions. He can also reverse swing the ball, which is important. I have seen him bowl," he added. Pacer Arshdeep Singh is yet to make his debut for India in the longest format. As Jasprit Bumrah can miss the fourth Test due to his workload mangament, there are chances that Arshdeep can get his maiden Test cap. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav is also yet to feature in the Playing XI in the ongoing series. There were talks of getting included in the second Test but the team chose Washington Sundar instead of him. The fourth Test between India and England will kick-start from July 23 in Manchester.

India U-19 Day 1: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Exits Early But Ayush Matre Smashes Century

The Indian U-19 team dominated Day 1 of the first Youth Test against England with Ayush Matre's century and strong support from Vihan Malhotra, Abhiyan Kundu, and Rahul Kumar. The Indian U-19 team stormed back into red-ball form with a statement-making performance on Day 1 of the first Youth Test against England. After a forgettable white-ball series, it was skipper Ayush Matre who flipped the script with a commanding century that set the tone for a dominant day with the bat. India finished stumps at a formidable 450 for 7 in just 88 overs, a scoring rate more reminiscent of a one-day match than a four-day Test. All eyes were on Vaibhav Suryavanshi, India's attacking opener who had lit up the recent ODI series with his explosive stroke-play. But hopes of another highlight reel knock were dashed early. He fell cheaply for just 14, leaving India wobbling slightly after an unsteady start. Then came the rescue act. Captain Ayush Matre, under pressure after his own lean patch in the ODIs, stepped up in style. He smashed 102 off 115 balls, peppering the boundary with 14 fours and clearing it twice. His partnership with Vihan Malhotra (67) steadied the innings—together they added 173 for the second wicket. But the real carnage came later. After the top order had done its job, Abhiyan Kundu and Rahul Kumar took the attack to England's bowlers with a brutal 179-run stand for the fifth wicket, scored in just 27.4 overs. By stumps, Ambarish was unbeaten on 31, with Henil Patel giving him company on 6. England's bowlers were left looking for answers after an exhausting day in the field. view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 14:35 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
