
Rare whale spotted on Scottish west coast 'for first time in 20 years'
The sea loch is on the north west coast of Scotland. Ullapool sits on its shore.
Belugas are a very rare sight in Scotland. In January 2024, a sighting off West Ayre in Shetland was reported as only the sixth time the whale had ever been seen in Scottish waters.
Normally, the white whales live in much colder waters, such as the Arctic, north Canada, or Alaska.
Noel Hawkins, a consultant for the Ullapool Sea Savers, told the John O'Groats Journal: 'A few days ago, we passed what I thought was a strange cetacean as it looked light coloured.
'My partner Janis looked back and saw it spyhop and thought it was a porpoise, which seemed strange as I'd never seen one do that.'
When a whale 'spyhops', it positions itself parallel to the water level, with its head raised and tail down, in order to look around. The position is likened to a human treading water.
Hawkins told the John O'Groats Journal that the sighting had been confirmed by two other videos, adding: 'It definitely is a beluga — it's even been verified by Hugh Harrop of Shetland Wildlife.'
'It's very strange as it shouldn't be here and we're worried it might be in trouble. Please keep an eye out – but if it is seen, please give it distance and peace, do not get close to it or chase it.'

A Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust spokesperson said it was the first sighting of a beluga off the west coast in 20 years.
According to the Sea Watch Foundation, a lone beluga was spotted off Applecross for consecutive days in April 1995.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said: 'We are aware of the sighting of the beluga whale in Loch Broom.
'We are monitoring the situation but until we get better photo ID we cannot say if it is the same one that turned up in Shetland last year.
'We would also appeal to people to stay away from the area as it could cause the animal unnecessary disturbance as well as congestion in the area.'

Three rare whales found dead on Orkney shoreline
A specialist team from the University of Glasgow has begun carrying out post-mortems on the whale carcasses. Three rare whales have been found dead on the shoreline on Orkney. The northern bottlenose whales - a deep-diving ocean species rarely seen close to land - were discovered at the southern tip of Papa Westray, on Wednesday, July 23. Early examinations suggest the animals were in good health before they became stranded, with no signs of entanglement, fishing gear injuries, or other human-related trauma. The Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS), based at the University of Glasgow, is currently investigating the incident. Director Dr Andrew Brownlow said the deaths were 'tragic' and pointed to broader environmental concerns. He said: "We have been attending the stranding of three bottlenose dolphins on Papa Westray and investigations are still at a very early stage. We can tell from initial examinations that the animals were all male and may not have fed in a number of days, possibly contributing to their stranding. "While we do not yet know for sure why these particular animals stranded, we know this species are deep divers, whose usual habitat is the deep ocean and although it is not unheard of for this species to mass strand like this it is not usual. We know this species can be sensitive to the impacts of disturbance from for example underwater noise but at this stage it is not possible to say for certain what led to this stranding. "July is increasingly becoming a problematic month from strandings in Scotland, suggesting our waters are changing, impacting the wildlife within them. Although strandings are tragic events in their own right, we can learn from them in terms of the species, the individual animals, and what might be impacting them in our waters." The dead whales are being examined as part of ongoing efforts to better understand the causes of marine mammal strandings, which appear to be on the rise in Scottish waters. SMASS has urged anyone who finds a stranded marine animal - alive or dead - to report it immediately, so experts can respond and gather crucial information. Archeologists identify 250-year-old ship on Orkney
The shipwreck has had its identity discovered after being found on the island of Sanday last year. The identity of a 1700s vessel shipwrecked in Orkney has been uncovered by archaeologists. The ship discovered on the island of Sanday last year is most likely the Earl of Chatham - a former Royal Navy vessel called HMS Hind that was later renamed once it became a whaling ship. Historic Environment Scotland (HSE), which funded the research, said the sixth-rate 24-gun frigate saw many years of active service, including sieges of Louisbourg and Quebec in the 1750s and the American Revolutionary War in the late 1770s. Once it was decommissioned, it was sold and renamed the Earl of Chatham, becoming a 500-tonne whaling ship. This was common for Royal Navy ships because their build quality allowed them to withstand the icy conditions of British whaling routes, according to HSE. As the Earl of Chatham, it completed four seasons in the Arctic before ultimately meeting its end in the Bay of Lopness in March 1788. It carried 56 sailors on board at the time, all of whom survived. Following its discovery in February 2024, Wessex Archaeology, along with Dendrochronicle and volunteer community researchers, began working on its origins. Analysis of the wood determined the ship was built with timber from south and south-west England. Archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology, local community researchers, and the Sanday Heritage Centre then spent several months working with archives and community records to find the most likely candidate for the ship. This research was also supported by Sanday Heritage Group and Orkney Archaeology Society. The Sanday Wreck was revealed last year thanks to changes in the climate. Increased storminess and unusual wind patterns led to removal of the covering sands which had hidden and protected the wreck for centuries. Changes to coastlines, which are predicted to accelerate in coming decades, could make similar finds more common. Ben Saunders, senior marine archaeologist at Wessex Archaeology, said: 'It is thanks to our dedicated team of community researchers and the evidence they have gathered that means we have been able to identify the Sanday Wreck with a reasonable degree of confidence. 'Throughout this project, we have learned so much about the wreck, but also about the community in Sanday in the 1780s. ' Sanday was infamous for shipwrecks at the time, called 'the cradle of shipwrecks in Scotland', but the community was equally well-known for its hospitability as it looked after sailors who fell afoul of the area's stormy seas. 'We are grateful to the support from our partners, and we're delighted to be able to share our work on this intriguing wreck.' Alison Turnbull, director of external relations and partnerships at HES, said: 'The discovery of the Sanday Wreck is a rare and fascinating story. 'Wessex Archaeology worked closely with the community of Sanday to discover the ship's identity, which shows that communities hold the keys to their own heritage. 'It is our job to empower communities to make these discoveries and be able to tell the story of their historic environment. 'We are proud to have grant-funded this work, which supports both Scotland's archaeology strategy of making archaeology matter, and Scotland's national strategy for the historic environment – Our Past, Our Future.' Nick Hewitt, culture team manager for Orkney Islands Council, added: 'It has been a wonderful team effort so far between many and one we're proud to have been a part of, and will continue to be as we support the Sanday community explore the future possibilities for their wreck.'
