Alligator Alcatraz: Inside the world's deadliest prison surrounded by alligators and pythons - you won't believe it's real

US President Donald Trump recently pulled off one of his most extreme immigration stunts. He has opened a migrant detention center unlike any other in the Everglades of Florida, guarded by alligators. Critics call it cruel, but Trump and his allies insist it's only the beginning.
President Trump unveiled "

Environmentalists and human rights groups have expressed outrage over the project, which Trump defends as a strong border deterrent.

What exactly is 'Alligator Alcatraz'?
The site, known as Alligator Alcatraz because of the swamp that is teeming with reptiles, is the most recent contentious step taken by the Trump administration to increase its deportation program.
Live Events
In footage of the new center, migrants are seen sleeping in a heavy-duty tent with a number of cages containing bunk beds.
The scene is evocative of the infamous Cecot prison in El Salvador. Hundreds of alleged members of the violent MS-13 Venezuelan gang have been sent to what is known as "hell on earth" prisons by the Trump administration, as per a report by NBC.
"You have a lot of bodyguards and a lot of cops in the form of alligators," the president said during a tour of the location with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. 'You don't have to pay them so much, but I wouldn't want to run through the Everglades for long,' he stated.
The site, 50 miles west of Miami, is expected to cost $450 million annually to operate once it is fully operational. It can accommodate up to 5,000 migrants, as per a report by NBC.
However, according to Florida officials, it would house roughly 1,000 "criminal aliens," as per a report by The Telegraph.
The Florida Attorney General, James Uthmeier, and Mr. DeSantis came up with the idea for the project. They used emergency powers to build the compound, which is composed of sturdy tents and trailers.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the detention was necessary to hold "deranged" migrants after touring the facility, as per a report.
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump also made a joke about fugitive migrants being devoured by Florida wildlife while travelling to the official opening of a detention facility known as "Alligator Alcatraz."
When asked if the detention facility was built with the intention of ensuring that anyone who escaped would be devoured by snakes or alligators, Trump responded to reporters, "This is not a nice business. Snakes are fast, but alligators... we're going to teach them how to run away from an alligator, okay?"
"If they escape prison, how to run away. Don't run in a straight line. Run like this. And you know what? Your chances go up about one percent," as per a report by The Telegraph.
Who's opposing this?
Critics of Trump's harsh immigration crackdown have referred to the reptile-filled Everglades swamp as inhumane.
Democrats, environmentalists, and tribal leaders have all criticized the new compound, citing the cruel conditions and dangers to the local wildlife.

Mr. DeSantis dismissed these worries, stating that "it's not about the Everglades," and that "people just don't want to see illegals deported."
Why was it built in the Everglades?
At the center of the Everglades conservation area's vast network of mangrove forests, imposing marshes, and "rivers of grass" is the site, which is situated on an abandoned airfield.
An estimated 200,000 alligators live in the Everglades National Park, making it a major habitat for these animals. However, officials have emphasized the danger by claiming that, aside from pythons and alligators, there won't be much waiting for people if they leave.
Is this a serious security measure or a political stunt?
Officials in Florida and the White House have referred to it as "Alligator Alcatraz," a reference to the former San Francisco island prison that Trump has stated he wants to reopen.
The Trump administration is promoting "Alligator Alcatraz" in an effort to garner support for a massive tax and spending bill that the president is attempting to pass this week.
The "One Big Beautiful Bill" includes money for Trump's immigration crackdown, which includes more detention center beds.
FAQs
Why is it known as 'Alligator Alcatraz'?
As it's built in an alligator-infested swamp in Florida and designed to be escape-proof, much like the old island prison Alcatraz.
Who is being held there?
The facility is intended for undocumented migrants, including alleged gang members, but many people without criminal records have been detained.

Ukraine arms freeze sparks GOP fury: Pentagon's pause catches Donald Trump allies off guard; target Colby

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth (AP) The United States' latest decision to halt some weapon shipments to Ukraine came as a surprise even to people usually in the loop on such matters, including officials from the state department, members of Congress, and some key European allies, according to Politico. The halt was prompted by Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby and a close group of advisers, who expressed concerns that some US weapons stockpiles were becoming depleted. The unexpected decision on Monday sparked concern and frustration, even among leading Republicans, over the apparent perception that a single senior Pentagon official had such influence on the outcome. Even President Donald Trump's allies expressed frustration over the decision, accusing officials like Colby, who conducted a review of US munitions stockpiles prior to the pause, of advancing the move without informing the rest of the administration or other stakeholders. They pointed out that the decision to suspend weapons shipments to Ukraine appeared to be made with minimal coordination across the administration, following major reductions to the national security council that had significantly weakened its influence. 'I think it's all made by the DOD policy director, this Colby guy. We essentially don't have a national security adviser,' said Republican representative for Texas Michael McCaul. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Искате да научите повече за новото BMW 2 Gran Coupe? The decision sparked confusion and a sense of shock in Ukraine, while also prompting concern in Europe over whether the US was beginning to retreat from its military backing of Kyiv, at a time when Trump seemed increasingly open to the idea of providing additional aid to help defend Ukraine against Russian attacks. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, a member of the house intelligence committee, wrote a letter to Trump on Tuesday requesting an emergency briefing from the White House and the department of defense regarding the suspension of military aid, which had originally been approved under the Biden administration. One official said the Pentagon's move was uncoordinated and surprised the state department. According to two other officials, Pentagon leaders didn't consult the state department, the US embassy in Kyiv, or Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg's team before halting a shipment of critical weapons already in Poland. Some members of the Joint Staff also opposed the decision, they added, reported Politico. The White House and the state department rejected claims that the munitions pause took officials by surprise. 'This is false,' said a White House official. 'The president and top officials expect the DOD to regularly review aid allocations to ensure they are in line with the America First agenda.'

Court cannot punish B for A's mistake: Counsel on HC order nixing 32k primary teachers' appts

Kolkata: Senior counsel Anindya Mitra challenged the 2023 Calcutta High Court order by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay annulling services of 32,000 primary school teachers and argued that a court of law cannot cancel appointments of people not made parties in a case because that would constitute a violation of the principles of natural justice. Arguing before a division bench of the Calcutta HC on Thursday, Mitra said, "The petitioners who moved the single bench didn't even make such a prayer." The senior counsel restricted his arguments to the 2016 selection of primary teachers that concluded in 2017 and distinguished it from the 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Mitra argued that the writ petition was moved five years after the selection process had concluded and pointed out that the petitioners did not make any allegations of illegality. "The basis of the illegality recorded in the judgement was the judge's own, based on irrelevant considerations. "A minister or an MLA or a former president might have been arrested for doing something wrong. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But for an offence committed by A, you cannot punish B," Mitra said. He submitted that the judge made these observations in relation to the 2014 TET and not the 2016 selection process by the Board. The senior counsel drew the division bench's attention to the part of the single bench judgement stating: "the sense of justice is above the sense of law" and argued that such a conclusion goes against the basic framework of the Constitution and rule of law. The counsel pointed out that the judge, while taking on an investigation on his own, had questioned candidates from only four of 20 districts and made a generalised observation on aptitude tests, when nine among those questioned had said that aptitude tests were held. Mitra cited SC judgements to substantiate that a court cannot generalise issues. He further pointed out from the records that the judge had initially ordered the cancellation of 36,000 teachers. "He made changes to his order, calling it a typographical error. Is this believable?"
