Mandhana eyes more T20I success after maiden ton
While it marked a significant personal milestone, Mandhana admitted that T20Is don't come naturally to her due to her preference for timing over power-hitting.
"It's a nice feeling because, of course, this format is something which, for me as a batter, I need to keep pushing and keep improving.
"It's not a very natural format for me because I like to time the ball, not a big hitter of the ball, and for the last six years, it's always a work in progress and it's still a work in progress."
The 28-year-old expressed her desire to build on this knock and notch up more big scores in the format.
"So, to actually get a hundred in this format, of course, getting it before in Test cricket and One Day cricket which are more suited to my batting [was significant as well], but getting it in this format is pretty special because it's not one of my strengths. I mean, the improvement and I'm trying to work a lot on my power hitting and to see that come through, which is a really nice feeling."
The captain threw her support behind opening partner Shafali Verma, expressing confidence that runs would soon follow for the young batter. Shafali returned to the Indian setup after being left out in late 2024, but her comeback got off to a mixed start as she struggled for fluency, managing 20 off 22 balls.
"I've seen Shafali bat in the last seven-eight days, [she did] amazingly well in the nets," Mandhana said.
"So I don't see a big knock is too far because of the way she's been hitting the ball. Sometimes coming back into the Indian team and coming into the first match, of course, there are a different kind of nerves. I'm sure this match is going to take those nerves away for her.
Mandhana learned she would be captaining in the first T20I just two hours before the match, after regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was ruled out due to a head knock sustained in Wednesday's warm-up game. Despite the late call-up, Mandhana assured that captaincy doesn't affect her batting.
"As a batter, it doesn't change a lot. You don't think that you are captaining and you bat differently. Whenever you have the bat in hand, you have to do the job for the team regardless of the position you are in, so I'm really happy that I could contribute today."

'Love watching him play' - Stokes in awe of India star
On Day 1 of the first Test against India, England found a breakthrough when Ben Stokes dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal soon after his century, a crucial moment in the game at the time. As Rishabh Pant walked in, England might have sensed an opportunity, only for Pant to make his intent clear immediately. He calmly pushed the first ball he faced to mid-on, and then, off the very next delivery, launched it straight back over Stokes' head for a commanding boundary. England have their tails up after being 1-0 and have been further boosted by the inclusion of Jofra Archer in the squad, though they have named an unchanged XI for the second Test. Stokes was thrilled to have Archer back in the mix, even if he wasn't featuring just yet. The England skipper has his eyes on the bigger picture for the fiery pacer, who hasn't played a Test since 2021 due to constant injuries. 'To have him back with us here after such a long time is I think first and foremost great for him. Great for the team,' Stokes said. 'I felt it was important, even if he didn't get selected this week, that he spends time around the group. Because I think hopefully we will see him play a part in this series going forward. So that time spent with Jof with the other individuals in this group is very important for the rest of the series, you know, not just the performances out on the field as well.' And it's been a while since I've faced them, so a little bit of a wake-up call for me as well." And for him to be here now, I don't think I could really explain what needs to give Jofra Archer any more desire to get back out on the field and represent England in the Test arena.' Bell, Mandhana headline ICC Women's T20I Player Rankings
England fast bowler Lauren Bell and India's stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana have registered huge gains in the ICC Women's T20I Player Rankings after stellar performances in the opening match of their five-match series in Nottingham. Bell has moved up two slots to reach a career-best fourth position among bowlers after taking three wickets while Mandhana, who smashed an electrifying 62-ball 112 runs to set up an emphatic 97-run victory, has risen one slot to third place and a career-best 771 ratings points. The hosts suffered their heaviest T20I defeat in the opening fixture at Trent Bridge thanks to the heroics of Mandhana and left-arm spinner, Shree Charani, who took four wickets on debut to enter the rankings in 450th position. Mandhana's opening partner Shafali Verma has moved up one slot to 13th position after scoring 20 runs and Harleen Deol has re-entered the rankings in 86th position on the back of a 43 off 23 balls. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is another one to gain in the latest weekly update after top-scoring for her team with 66 off 42 deliveries.
