Panthers reporter hints at team's next possible addition
The Carolina Panthers might not be done with the reconstruction of their defense.
Darin Gantt of Panthers.com covered the team's recent defensive overhaul in this week's "Ask The Old Guy," his regular mailbag series. And when asked about possible additions to the secondary, Gantt throws out a few interesting names and thoughts:
If they're going to be out shopping for more help, the good news is there are multiple qualified guys at the spot they're thinnest at (safety). Guys including Julian Blackmon (who visited in March), known commodity Justin Simmons (who was an All-Pro in Denver for Ejiro Evero), and several more are still sitting there on the market. They spent the spring looking at young options there, but could stand to be more experienced and deeper.

As Gantt notes, Blackmon met with the Panthers earlier this offseason. The 26-year-old has spent each of his five NFL campaigns as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, amassing 300 combined tackles and 10 interceptions since 2020.
Carolina, according to multiple reports, has also expressed in Simmons—who spent the 2022 season under Evero. That year saw the two-time Pro Bowler and four-time second-team All-Pro notch a league-leading six interceptions along with a career-high three forced fumbles.
The team's safety room currently features free-agent signee Tre'von Moehrig, 2025 fourth-round pick Lathan Ransom, Demani Richardson, Nick Scott and a trio of undrafted rookies (Isaac Gifford, Jack Henderson and Trevian Thomas).

L.A. County firefighters to receive Pat Tillman Award at ESPYs
This year's Pat Tillman Award for Service will be presented to two Los Angeles County firefighters during the ESPY awards. (Mark J. Terrill / Mark Terrill/invision/ap) In January, as wildfires tore through greater Los Angeles, more than 7,500 emergency personnel mobilized — confronting searing heat and extreme winds, trying to contain the devastation. Among them stood an Olympic gold medalist and a professional soccer champion. Advertisement L.A. County firefighters David Walters and Erin Regan, former athletes who were among the 7,500 emergency personnel who responded to the January wildfires in Southern California, earned them this year's Pat Tillman Award for Service that will be presented at the ESPY Awards. The award — named after Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety who left the NFL to enlist in the Army following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was killed in action — celebrates those with deep ties to sports who have served others, embodying Tillman's legacy. Saquon Barkley: I "never heard a word" from Commanders, Cowboys
The Giants get plenty of criticism for allowing running back Saquon Barkley to become a free agent in 2024. They weren't alone in their decision not to make him part of the team moving forward. Two of their top rivals never even called Barkley. Advertisement "Never heard a word from the Commanders or Dallas," Barkley told someone who is apparently known as Janky Rondo (lay off me, I'm old) at a recent celebrity softball game. "That's why it's BTA when I see them." The Commanders weren't in position to make a run at an elite running back. The Cowboys were, especially with Tony Pollard leaving in free agency for the Titans. Dallas rightfully was criticized at the time for not showing interest in former Titans running back Derrick Henry, who was interested in playing for the Cowboys. Dallas didn't catch much flak for not pursuing Saquon. There's no guarantee it would have worked nearly as well for Saquon in Dallas as it has in Philadelphia. And he definitely wouldn't have had the kind of individual and team success with the Giants that he had with the Eagles. Advertisement The Eagles were the perfect team to pursue him. They had everything else. His arrival provided a potent layer of icing on an award-winning cake. So he should be glad that it wasn't a difficult decision, with perhaps a lesser team than the Eagles offering him something significantly more financially. He also should be glad that the Giants let him get away, allowing him to "BTA" when playing the other teams in the NFC East. And pretty much everyone else.
