Grandfather and 2 grandsons trapped by rising tide in Wilderness rescued
George Herald reports that the children's mother alerted the NSRI Wilderness duty crew at 15:38 last Friday, reporting that her sons, aged 10 and 15, and their 72-year-old grandfather were trapped on the rocks by the incoming tide.
According to Ian Gerber, NSRI Wilderness's duty coxswain, the trio had been fishing when the tide began to rise, cutting them off from the mainland.
'NSRI rescue teams, assisted by George Fire and Rescue Services, responded to the call,' he says.
Two NSRI rescue swimmers entered the surf, carrying life jackets and rope to reach the stranded group. Although the high tide was only expected after 18:00, it had already made returning to shore too dangerous for the family.
'The grandfather and two boys were found safe and in good spirits on the rocks. They were fitted with life jackets and, using a rope system, were brought to shore one at a time by the rescue swimmers. Their fishing gear was also retrieved,' says Gerber.
Gerber praised the family for staying put and not attempting to cross the surf on their own. 'They did the right thing by calling for help,' he says.
The NSRI also thanked George Fire and Rescue for their support.
The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the rescuers for their assistance.

KZN braces for icy blast as snow looms over Drakensberg
KZN residents should brace for plummeting temperatures and the possibility of snow over the southern Drakensberg this weekend, as a powerful winter weather system sweeps across the country. The Witness reports that Lehlohonolo Thobela, a forecaster from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), says snowfall is expected from today over the high peaks of the Drakensberg mountains, Lesotho and the Eastern Cape. 'By Friday, very cold conditions will spread further inland, and snowfall is possible over the high peaks of the Eastern Cape and southern Drakensberg,' says Thobela. SAWS has issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall in the Western Cape, warning of widespread showers, possible flooding and dangerous conditions on roads. Winds of up to 80km/h are forecast for the south-western coastal belt, including Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas. Another cold front is expected to make landfall on Sunday in the Western Cape, bringing further rainfall and high seas, with waves between 4.5m and 5.5m predicted between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay. Small stock farmers have been urged to take precautions as harsh conditions, including very cold, wet and windy weather, settle over much of the interior. SAWS has called on the public to monitor weather alerts and take necessary steps to remain safe amid the countrywide cold snap. Rand Water maintenance: Recovery of southern Johannesburg and inner city
Good news as the pumping at the Zwartkopjes system has significantly improved, and since midnight, pumping to the Yeoville system is now operating at full capacity. However, the Johannesburg Water Yeoville system will need a further 24 hours to fully stabilise, after which the water supply will be fully restored across the affected areas. Pump commissioning is scheduled to take place later this morning, which will help speed up the recovery process. Until all systems are stabilised and fully operational, water tankers will continue to serve the affected communities. These include residents and businesses in Yeoville reservoir, Forest Hill tower, Berea reservoir, Moffat View, Parktown 2 reservoir, Hector Norris pump station, Inner City, Oakdene, Crown Gardens, Glenvista, and Glenanda. Johannesburg Water and Rand Water are working tirelessly to restore normal water supply to all areas. Residents are advised to remain patient and continue using water sparingly until full service is re-established. Look: Snow confirmed in SA and Lesotho
Several parts of South Africa and Lesotho woke up under a blanket of snow today, with breathtaking scenes shared from the Eastern Cape mountains, southern Drakensberg, Lesotho and the Karoo, where the icy weather delivered on forecasts overnight. Pretoria Rekord reports that the snow is part of a broader wintry system, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and freezing temperatures to much of the country. And, Gauteng is feeling the chill too. According to Michelle du Plessis, a forecaster at VoxWeather, the powerful cut-off low and another intense cold front sweeping across the country have already produced widespread showers, heavy snow in the highlands and freezing conditions. While Gauteng residents are enduring bitterly cold weather, Du Plessis explained that the chances of seeing snow settle in the province remain slim. 'Any snow that falls in Gauteng is likely to melt before reaching the ground. More likely, residents will see soft hail or graupel rather than true snow,' she said, adding that the province's elevation is simply too low for significant accumulation. Meanwhile, the Western Cape braces for up to 80mm of rain, and the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall and possible flooding in the province as the next front moves through.
