Live event: How the Golden State Valkyries took flight

Everywhere you look in San Francisco this summer there's lavender. It's on hats, drenching sweatshirts, accenting truly excellent varsity jackets, a city-wide purple-washing thanks to the Golden State Valkyries and their remarkable debut season.
Since tipping off in May, San Francisco's WNBA expansion team has taken the city by storm. The Valkyries have sold out all of their home games, transformed the Chase Center into 'Ballhalla' and positioned themselves within reach of a playoff berth.
Then there's the matter of their valuation. Just three months after the Valkyries took the court, the team that owner Joe Lacob and co. paid $50 million to establish is valued at $500 million — the most in the WNBA.
How have the Valkyries captured San Francisco's attention and catapulted themselves to record attendance and valuation in their first season? And as WNBA viewership explodes, how are play, refereeing, fan culture and player compensation evolving too?

Sex toy-throwing fan arrested for disrupting WNBA game between Valkyries, Dream

The fan who threw a green sex toy onto the court during a WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream on Tuesday has been arrested, according to a league spokesperson. That person has not been identified publicly. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,' the spokesperson said. 'In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.' Tuesday's incident occurred during the fourth quarter of the game in Atlanta, with less than a minute left on the clock. Television cameras briefly zoomed in on the sex toy before cutting away to another shot. Some WNBA players have laughed about the incident while also acknowledging it as a potential safety hazard. 'I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous. And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing,' Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said while chuckling during a postgame news conference. 'I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in, we stayed concentrated.' Other players, including the Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham and New York Liberty's Isabelle Harrison, criticized the move as a disrespectful security failure. Fans on social media widely shared clips and pictures of the situation, and an apparent copycat threw a second green sex toy onto the court Friday during another Valkyries road game against the Chicago Sky. 'It's super disrespectful,' the Sky's Elizabeth Williams said after the game, which the Valkyries won 73-66. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' Atlanta police have not commented on the reported arrest. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. Fans and city leaders hope WNBA approves sale to move the Sun to Boston

Big news broke Saturday when reports said the minority owner of the Celtics reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun and move them to Boston. The group led by Steve Pagliuca bid a record $325 million for the WNBA franchise, with plans to move them to Massachusetts. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey wants this deal to be approved. 'Boston is the perfect place for a WNBA team. We are the hub of New England and the birthplace of basketball. We have an incredible sports culture and strong enthusiasm for women's sports, as evidenced by the Sun selling out TD Garden two years in a row. This would be a great opportunity for our state, for the League and for the players.' Governor Maura Healey Boston 25 spoke with fans outside of TD Garden Saturday night and they were excited at the thought of a women's basketball team coming to the city. 'I think it's crazy I think Boston should have been one of the first cities to get one,' Joseph Willingham said. 'It's insane.' Basketball fans have been waiting years for this and are pumped to hear it could finally be happening soon. 'Any women's team coming to the city is really exciting I definitely support them,' Allen Martin said. Boston City Councilor Brian Worrell is pushing for people to call on the WNBA to add a team to Boston. He's hoping and expecting this deal to go through. 'We heard from many, many fans here in Boston that want the 'W' here in the city,' Worrell said. 'We have the best fan base in the country so I wouldn't see why the WNBA would not approve this.' The sale is pending approval of the league and its Board of Governors. The franchise wouldn't play in Boston until the 2027 season at the earliest. 'I hope the league hears us loud and clear; we have a record deal,' Worrell said. 'Let's get this deal done, and hopefully the sun will rise in Boston.' This is a developing story.
