New to stream in July: ‘Washington Black,' ‘Heads of State,' ‘Sharkfest' and more
Summertime is for adventure, thrills and high drama. Action fans have a chance to watch John Cena and Idris Elba play gun-toting politicians. A new drama mini-series explores race and scientific discovery, while in real life, a scientist confronts her greatest fear in the ocean. If that's too intense, how about some stop-motion 'Hello Kitty'? Netflix, Disney+ and Tubi all offer great summer content to stream.
'Heads of State'
If there's an award for the most ridiculous but fun action movie, then 'Heads of State' is already a top contender. John Cena ('Suicide Squad') and Idris Elba (also 'Suicide Squad') play the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Great Britain, respectively. Elba's character, a former commando, has little respect for and in common with Cena's action-star-turned-politician, but they have to work together after an aborted joint assassination attempt on Air Force One.
With a soundtrack that is apparently 87% Motley Crue and more guns than an East Texas wedding reception, the film is clearly leaning into self-parody territory of the action genre itself. That doesn't detract from the awesomeness in the slightest, though. Releasing on July 2 (marking the date in 1776 that Continental Congress voted for independence from Great Britain) is a nice touch.
Watch it: Action. Streaming on Prime Video starting Wednesday, July 2.
National Geographic 'Sharkfest'
Ever since National Geographic launched 'Sharkfest' in 2021, it's been the superior television celebration of the ocean's apex predator (sorry, 'Shark Week'). This year looks amazing, with a special starring documentarian Bertie Gregory diving with great white sharks without a cage, a retrospective of the film 'Jaws' at 50, and science educator Alanna Canaran's hunt for the sharks of the Northern Atlantic off the coast of Canada. The latter also explores Canaran's fear of the animals and her hope that by understanding them better she can turn phobia into wonder.
Watch it: Docuseries. Streaming on Disney+ starting July 5.
'Get Off My Lawn'
When you buy a house, it's not uncommon to find something weird left behind by the previous owner. In this case, a couple (Camila Banus and Tahj Mowry) must deal with a deranged teen named Alec obsessed with making sure they keep the house exactly as his late grandfather (who is buried in the backyard) wanted it. Jonah Hwang plays Alec with a terrifying suburban banality, making him the creepiest clean-cut monster since Terry O'Quinn in 'The Stepfather.' And you thought the HOA was tough to deal with.
'Washington Black'
An 11-year-old enslaved boy, born on a Barbados sugar plantation and gifted with a scientific mind, becomes a world-traveling adventurer. Based on the novel by Esi Edugyan, this miniseries a riveting story of perseverance and ingenuity as the young George Washington 'Wash' Black (Ernest Kingsley Jr. and Eddie Katanga as a child) seeks his fortune under the tutelage of an aspiring aeronaut (Tom Ellis).
Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, who penned the brilliant 'Replay' episode for Jordan Peele's reboot of 'The Twilight Zone,' serves as showrunner.
'My Melody and Kuromi'
In recent years, My Melody and Kuromi have become the faces of the Sanrio Hello Kitty brand. Now, they are together in an adorable stop-motion animated series from director Tomoki Misato (check out his excellent student short 'My Little Goat'). The sweet My Melody and sinister Kuromi run competing bakeries in town, leading to a rivalry until they stumble across an entire confectionary magical universe. It's not overly saccharine, though. The series also features some impressive looking car chases and other action pieces.
Watch it: Animated. Streaming on Netflix starting July 24.

We've also highlighted a few standout picks you won't want to miss, including the third and final season of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' a new action-comedy featuring Idris Elba and John Cena, and 'Ballard,' the new 'Bosch' spinoff. 'Heads of State' is a new action-comedy featuring an unlikely duo: U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena) and U.K. Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba). After their jet is shot down, the two sworn rivals must band together alongside MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) to survive a deadly global conspiracy aimed at shaking the foundation of their nations. If you're in the mood for fast-paced global stakes, charismatic star power, and light-hearted action, 'Heads of State' looks to be July's must-watch on Prime Video. Whether Cena and Elba can set their rivalry aside and save the world … well, that's the fun of finding out. Stream "Heads of State" on Prime Video from July 2 Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'Ballard' is set in the 'Bosch' universe and follows Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q). After being introduced in the 'Bosch: Legacy' finale, Ballard now leads an underfunded, all-volunteer LAPD cold case unit. Determined and fiercely empathetic, she juggles complex investigations like the high-profile 'Flower Girl' serial killer case while navigating bureaucratic roadblocks and inner-department corruption. Backed by familiar faces including Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Ballard is tasked with reopening unsolved crimes, but the emotional toll and political weight of the job threaten to overwhelm her. Created by 'Bosch' author Michael Connelly, the show leans into grounded storytelling, with a focus on justice, trauma, and the messiness of police work. With all ten episodes premiering at once, 'Ballard' offers fans of the franchise (and detective dramas in general) a darker, more character-driven story. Stream "Ballard" on Prime Video from July 9 Premiering July 16 with a two-episode kick-off and rolling out weekly through September 17, the third and final season of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' adapts Jenny Han's concluding novel. Set two years after Belly's (Lola Tung) decision to be with Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), the story follows her summer after junior year of college. Belly and Jeremiah announce their engagement, only for Conrad (Christopher Briney) to reappear, reopening old wounds and thrusting Belly into a powerful emotional crossroads. With an expanded 11-episode run (the longest yet) the series dives deeper into the central love triangle, Belly's growth into adulthood, and the dynamics between her friends and family. So expect moments of heartbreak, healing, and surprising adventures (including potential new settings like Paris). Mark Hamill Recalls His Idea For Luke Skywalker's Tragic Backstory In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi'
More than 30 years after he'd last played the role, Mark Hamill had a much darker idea for Luke Skywalker's life in Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017). The Emmy winner recalled his pitch for writer/director Rian Johnson about where Luke's life had taken him in the years since Episode VI — Return of the Jedi (1983) that would make him turn his back on the Force before returning in Episode VII — The Force Awakens (2015). More from Deadline Mark Hamill On Why He Won't Return As Luke Skywalker In 'Star Wars' Franchise: 'I Had My Time' Rian Johnson Defends 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi's 'Slightly Goofy Humor' – Watch Allan Freeman Dies: Marketing Exec Who Worked On Campaigns For 'Star Wars', 'The Shining' & Three Best Picture Oscar Winners Was 88 'I thought, what could make someone give up a devotion to what is basically a religious entity, to give up being a Jedi,' he explained on the Bullseye podcast. 'Well, the love of a woman,' Hamill continued. 'So, he falls in love with a woman. He gives up being a Jedi. They have a child together. At some point the child, as a toddler, picks up an unattended lightsaber, pushes the button, and is killed instantly. The wife is so full of grief, she kills herself.' Hamill's latest interview comes after he shot down any hopes of Luke returning for another installment in the Disney and Lucasfilm franchise, after the character died during a pivotal moment in The Last Jedi, becoming one with the Force. 'I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the days, the humble days when George called Star Wars 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,'' he told 'We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my view is, I had my time. I'm appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.' Hamill jokingly added, 'And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there's no way I'm gonna appear as a naked Force ghost. I'm just letting you know that right now.'
