PSG Eliminates Lionel Messi and Inter Miami From the FIFA Club World Cup
Inter Miami's run in the FIFA Club World Cup is over.
Lionel Messi-led Miami, the only one of Major League Soccer's three participating clubs to advance to the 32-team tournament's round of 16, were humbled by European champions Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 on Sunday in Atlanta.
PSG, the club Messi played for from 2021 until arriving in South Florida two summers ago, won its first UEFA Champions League title last month, beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the continental final.
Sunday's match went much the same way. The French titans ran out to a lopsided first-half lead and never looked back. Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves opened the scoring just five minutes into the match on an unmarked header from point-blank range.
Miami tightened up defensively after that — until a fatal six-minute stretch at the end of the first half. Neves doubled the Parisians' advantage in the 39th-minute, and PSG added two more goals before the halftime whistle sounded. The first was an own goal by substitute Herons defender Tomas Aviles, who came on for an injured Noah Allen. Star PSG fullback Achraf Hakimi then made it 4-0 in first half stoppage time, effectively ending the contest there and then.
PSG is coached by Spaniard Luis Enrique, who managed Messi plus Miami teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez plus Herons' boss Javier Mascherano with Barcelona in the mid-2010s. The Champions League winners will take on either Brazilian giants Flamengo or European rivals Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals next Saturday. That game will also be staged at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia's capital. Miami returns to MLS regular season action next Saturday, when they face CF Montreal north of the border.
MLS clubs LAFC and the Seattle Sounders were eliminated from the Club World Cup in the group stage. Neither won a game. Miami, meantime, went undefeated in the first round, beating two-time European champ Porto and tying Brazil's Palmeiras and Egypt's Al Ahly.

Jesus Ferreira (goal, assist) leads Sounders past Austin FC
Jesus Ferreira had a goal and an assist as the Seattle Sounders returned to MLS play with a 2-0 victory against visiting Austin FC on Saturday night. Danny Musovski also scored and goalkeeper Stefan Frei made one save in posting the shutout for the Sounders (8-6-5, 29 points), who snapped a five-match losing streak in all competitions -- with three of those coming against international powers Botafogo, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup. Frei has 999 saves in his Sounders career, leaving him one shy of becoming just the second goalie in league history, behind only former Real Salt Lake standout Nick Rimando, to make 1,000 saves for a single franchise. Musovski snapped an eight-match scoreless streak in the 54th minute to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead. Ferreira sent a long lead pass to Musovski on the counterattack, with the forward dribbling the ball into the penalty area before putting a 12-yard shot through the legs of defender Oleksandr Svatok and off the inside of the left post. Ferreira opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. The Sounders won a 50-50 ball just shy of midfield in their own end of the pitch and Albert Rusnak sent a pass down the left wing to Paul Rothrock. The midfielder drove into the penalty area before sending a cross to the far post for Ferreira, whose blistering volley from 5 yards out left All-Star goalkeeper Brad Stuver with no chance. Stuver made four saves for Austin (7-8-5, 26 points), which had a two-match winning streak snapped. The Sounders nearly took the lead in the 11th minute as Musovski put a shot from the left side of the penalty area between Stuver's legs, but the goalie got just enough of the ball that it deflected off the left post before ricocheting into the middle of the 6-yard box. Defender Guilherme Biro nearly scored an own goal on the rebound, with his attempted clearance bouncing off the same left post. Austin's lone shot on goal came after a Sounders turnover deep in their own end in the 34th minute. Paris Saint-Germain cruise past Lionel Messi, Inter Miami
ATLANTA -- Paris Saint-Germain easily eliminated Inter Miami and old friend Lionel Messi from the FIFA Club World Cup, outclassing the Herons 4-0 in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Joao Neves potted two goals before a Miami own goal and a strike by Achraf Hakimi bloated the margin to four by halftime. The European champions will face the winner between Bayern Munich and Flamengo in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Oscar Ustari recorded six saves for Inter Miami, while PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma had to make just three after Miami was held without a shot attempt for the first 50 minutes. PSG finished with a 19-7 shots advantage and about two-thirds of the possession. "I am of course very satisfied with my players' game," said PSG coach Luis Enrique. "I think we started the game in the best way, with the intensity we needed. I think the second (half) was a little different, because the score conditioned it. They are very high-quality players. In the end, we are in the quarterfinals and we are happy." Enrique said his team would watch the Bayern-Flamengo match happening later on Sunday. "At this level of competition, it will be difficult regardless of the opponent," Enrique said. Miami was the only Major League Soccer club to advance to the knockout stage after Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders were eliminated from their respective groups.
