Uber to roll out ride-sharing across UK in ‘game-changer' for affordable travel
The option will be available in all major UK locations served by Uber except London by the end of June.
It will not be introduced in the capital until later this year because of 'differing local regulations', the company said.
UberX Share has been popular with people making leisure trips at night and commuters during a trial running in Bristol since November 2024, Uber said.
The service enables passengers to share cars with other users travelling in the same direction, in return for a cost reduction of up to 20%.
Uber said it is designed to add no more than an average of eight minutes to journeys.
The company added that pairing up passengers aligns with its 'efforts to reduce congestion and emissions in urban areas', as sharing journeys means 'fewer cars are needed to complete trips'.
Uber's UK general manager Andrew Brem said: 'UberX Share is a game-changer for affordable, sustainable travel in the UK.
'This service not only helps riders save money, but also reduces the number of vehicles on the road, cutting emissions and helping ease congestion in our towns and cities.'
Uber previously offered journey sharing in London under a service named UberPool, but this was suspended in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Uber to buy 20,000 self-driving taxis
Uber is to start rolling out self-driving taxis next year after striking a deal to take a $300m (£224m) stake in a US electric vehicle maker. The ride-sharing giant has agreed to buy 20,000 vehicles from Lucid Group to operate as a fleet of robotaxis. The Lucid Gravity SUVs, which use technology from robotics company Nuro, will be deployed over a six-year period, starting in a major US city next year. As part of the deal, Uber will take a $300m stake in Lucid, becoming the California-based company's second-largest investor behind Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Uber will also make an investment in robotics company Nuro worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Dara Khosrowshahi, chief executive of Uber, said: 'Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better. 'We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi programme, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.' It is the latest in a string of partnerships that Uber has struck with tech companies and car manufacturers, including Waymo and Volkswagen, as it looks to stake a claim in the nascent market. The company, which already operates self-driving taxis in some US cities, this week struck a deal with China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis in Asia and the Middle East. It signals Uber's preference for partnering with and investing in third-party autonomous vehicle firms rather than attempting to develop the technology in-house – the strategy favoured by previous boss Travis Kalanick. Rivals and safety concerns However, the ride-hailing firm is facing intense competition from deep-pocketed rivals, including Google owner Alphabet and Amazon. Tesla last month also began rolling out its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with Elon Musk vowing to expand into other cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Self-driving cars have also come under close scrutiny over safety concerns and have been the target of political protests. Several Waymo robotaxis were set ablaze during protests against Donald Trump's immigration crackdown in LA last month. US regulators are also investigating Tesla's full self-driving software following a string of accidents, including one that killed a pedestrian. Uber has said it is ready to roll out autonomous taxis in the UK but is waiting for legal clearance. While the previous government said self-driving cars would be on Britain's roads by next year, Labour has now said it is more likely to happen in the second half of 2027. Uber's investment will come as a boost to Lucid, whose co-founder Peter Rawlinson stepped down last year amid heavy losses. He was replaced by Marc Winterhoff, who has pledged to double production this year after the company rolled out its $95,000 (£70,000) Gravity SUV model.

Waymo expands coverage in Austin, Texas, as robotaxi competition heats up
July 17 (Reuters) - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Waymo is expanding its service in Austin, Texas, to 90 square miles from 37 square miles earlier, the software giant's self-driving unit said on Thursday, seeking to protect its top position in the city from rivals such as Tesla. Waymo, which has over 100 vehicles on the Uber (UBER.N), opens new tab platform in Austin, will now cover new neighborhoods such as Crestview, Windsor Park, Sunset Valley and Franklin Park, the company said. After cautiously expanding its self-driving taxi services across the U.S. for years, Waymo is now largely seen as the frontrunner in the space. It has about 1,500 vehicles across San Francisco and other Bay Area cities, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and others. Rival Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab is looking to catch up, having conducted a small trial last month of about a dozen of its Model Y SUVs in a limited area of Austin. But Tesla still faces a steep challenge to commercialize this technology on a large scale and clear regulatory hurdles. The automaker also does not use sensors such as radar and lidar like Waymo and most rivals; instead, it depends solely on cameras and artificial intelligence. "Austin remains one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and we are doing our part to grow with it," Shweta Shrivastava, the senior director of product management at Waymo, said. Earlier this week, Waymo's vehicles logged a milestone of 100 million miles driven without a human behind the wheel, doubling its mileage in about six months.

Uber to invest $300 million in EV maker Lucid as part of robotaxi deal
SAN FRANCISCO, July 17 (Reuters) - Uber (UBER.N), opens new tab will invest $300 million in electric vehicle maker Lucid (LCID.O), opens new tab in a robotaxi deal that aims to start with one major U.S. city late next year, the companies said on Thursday. Over six years starting in 2026, Uber will acquire and deploy over 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs that will be equipped with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology from startup Nuro, the three companies said in a statement. The agreement illustrates the renewed plans and push for financing for self-driving cabs years after a first wave of autonomous driving investment produced only a limited number of vehicles. Tesla has recently launched a robotaxi trial in Austin and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab driverless taxi unit Waymo is speeding up its expansion. As part of their announced deal, Uber will invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Lucid and Nuro, which supplies self-driving technology to automakers, the joint statement said. Of that, $300 million will go to Lucid, the EV maker said in a separate filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday. Uber's latest move underscores its renewed push into the robotaxi space after exiting in 2020. Since then, Uber has pivoted to partnerships with several technology developers, including Waymo and Aurora (AUR.O), opens new tab. The deal with Lucid follows Uber's robotaxi agreement in April with Volkswagen that will supply its vans for commercial service planned for Los Angeles next year. But commercializing AV tech has been much harder than anticipated with high costs, tight regulations and federal investigations forcing many, including General Motors' (GM.N), opens new tab Cruise, to shut down. Some still in the race include (AMZN.O), opens new tab Zoox, which is testing a robotaxi without manual controls and plans to launch commercial services in Las Vegas this year. After years of missed promises, Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab started a restricted trial with about a dozen of its Model Y SUVs in Austin, Texas, last month. CEO Elon Musk has said it will expand the service rapidly to other U.S. cities this year. Waymo has been growing cautiously for years and operates in several U.S. cities with about 1,500 vehicles. It crossed 100 million miles of autonomous driving this month. A prototype of the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is already operating autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro's testing facility in Las Vegas, the companies said. "We are expanding beyond our traditional EV technology leadership and working on partnerships and going now into areas that in the past we have not really focused on," Lucid's interim CEO Marc Winterhoff told Reuters. Nuro, co-founded and led by former Waymo engineers, has expanded from making last-mile delivery vehicles to providing its self-driving technology for commercial and passenger vehicles. "We have other very active conversations going on the personal vehicle side ... where we would integrate Nuro driver into vehicles that will get sold to end consumers," Dave Ferguson, Nuro's co-founder and president, said. Nuro will still need to apply for state-level operating licenses though it holds some licenses from their previous delivery operations, he said.
