Westports shares jump 10pct to record high, trading volume nears two-year peak

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of Westports Holdings Bhd surged to a record high following the government's approval of a phased port tariff hike, which analysts say could boost the company's earnings over the next three years.
The stock settled 7.7 per cent or 36 sen higher at RM5.03, with more than 13.65 million shares traded, a level not seen since Sept 18, 2023.
Earlier, the counter opened flat at RM4.67 before rallying nearly 10 per cent to an intraday peak of RM5.12.
Westports has now risen 12 per cent year-to-date from RM4.57 at the start of January.
The rally came after the government approved a staggered 30 per cent increase in tariffs at Port Klang, Westports' home base, to be rolled out over the next 18 months.
Under the new schedule, handling charges for a 20-foot equivalent unit container will rise 15 per cent to RM345 from RM300 effective June 15.
This will be followed by a 10 per cent jump to RM375 on Jan 1, 2026, and another five per cent hike to RM390 on Jan 1, 2027.
RHB Investment Bank said in a research note the revised tariffs could be a game-changer for Westports' bottom line.
However, it cautioned that regional shipping activity may still face headwinds from ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the Israel-Iran conflict, which continues to weigh on global trade flows.

Govt tackles cost of living with Rahmah Sales and wage hikes

PUTRAJAYA: The government is adopting a two-pronged approach to tackle the rising cost of living, namely by expanding the MADANI Rahmah Sales Programme (PJRM) and raising the minimum income floor to boost disposable income. Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the PJRM initiative allows the public to purchase essential goods at more affordable prices through discounts, ultimately helping them save more. 'We face challenges in controlling global market prices. For instance, when we import goods like onions, which we rely on 100 per cent from external sources, prices are dictated by the international market. Although we can't control global prices, the government intervenes by implementing initiatives such as Rahmah Sales to offer discounts. 'This means, when people have limited disposable income, programmes like Rahmah Sales help make essential goods more accessible. Without such intervention, how can the people make the most of their remaining income?' she said in an exclusive interview with Bernama recently. She emphasised that the government's two-pronged approach, which focuses on enhancing disposable income and regulating the prices of essential goods, is a crucial step toward alleviating financial pressures on the people. 'The government is helping by increasing the income floor, which means improving people's income and ensuring that their disposable income rises. At the same time, we are controlling the prices of essential goods,' she said. 'Therefore, if anyone suggests that only one approach is sufficient, that's inaccurate. The government has to, and is implementing both simultaneously,' she said. Fuziah said, for example, the government has taken various steps to increase the people's income floor, including raising the minimum wage, adjusting the salaries of civil servants and setting the minimum wage rate, efforts aimed at ensuring people have more spending power. She also highlighted the government's commitment to expanding PJRM, noting that the allocation has been doubled from RM300 million to RM600 million this year, the programme can be held more frequently and expanded to cover all 600 state constituencies (DUN) nationwide.. 'With RM300 million, Rahmah Sales could be held twice a month in each state constituency. With the increased allocation, the programme can now be held four times a month, or once every week, in each DUN. 'For example, if a parliamentary constituency has three DUNs, Rahmah Sales can rotate locations weekly. If someone misses the sale this week, they can visit another nearby DUN the following week. We ensure that these sales are always available and easily accessible. It has become one of the most popular initiatives among the public,' she said. Meanwhile, regarding the proposal to expand the list of Basic Rahmah Contribution Assistance (SARA) items, Fuziah explained that the initiative is under the Ministry of Finance (MOF), while the KPDN always conveys the feedback received from the people to the relevant parties. 'MOF is listening and will continue to add to the SKU (stock keeping unit) list. I saw it myself when I went to the supermarket where even women's essentials have various brands included, and so are instant noodles,' she said. She said that improving the list of SARA items is a continuous process that is carried out based on the needs and feedback of consumers. 'The government is always listening to the people's needs, and improvements will be made accordingly,' she added. Fuziah also reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent business development ecosystem, free from cartel interference. She said this is being pursued through various mechanisms under the ministry's supervision, including the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC), oversight of profiteering activities, and supply chain management. 'We monitor all aspects of the market. We have price inspectors, enforcement teams, and several legislative instruments in place to ensure fairness and transparency,' she said. The ministry, she said, also conducts routine price monitoring through the Price Catcher application and regular inspections by enforcement officers. 'These efforts ensure that business development in the country is well-regulated and equitable for all parties,' she said. - Bernama

Westports Q2 profit up 14pct on higher container volumes, declares interim dividend

KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Holdings Bhd posted a 13.7 per cent rise in net profit to RM231.6 million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, compared to RM203.7 million in the same quarter last year, driven by higher operational revenue from increased container volumes. Revenue for the quarter grew 24.9 per cent to RM691.1 million from RM552.9 million previously, supported by higher container throughput and construction revenue from the port's ongoing development works. Westports recorded operational revenue of RM1.2 billion for the first half ended June 30, 2025, marking a 10 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Westports said its board of directors has declared a first interim dividend of 9.93 sen per share for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025, totaling RM338.6 million. On its prospects, the company said its latest projection anticipates a single-digit positive growth in volume for the year, adding that this forecast will be reassessed as the year unfolds. "The global economy continued to face headwinds such as tariff volatility, regionalisation consideration, military conflicts, sporadic port congestion and unsettled interest rates. "Some front-loading in the early part of the year has provided momentum to the current year's overall container volume growth," it said. Westports added that maintaining the current growth momentum in the second half of the year may prove difficult due to various challenges. However, it said the region's economic resilience and the alliance-adjusted model adopted by container shipping lines could help soften the impact on container volume growth.

Westports posts stronger earnings in 2Q, sees resilient demand ahead

KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Holdings Bhd sees resilient global trade and regional shipping trends driving future demand, according to executive chairman Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam. 'The US economy remained resilient despite trade tariffs, whereas the region's demand for container handling remained strong due to a container shipping alliance restructuring. 'At Westports, we anticipate favourable demand for container terminal handling facilities by the time the Company commissions the expanded container terminal CT10 into service in 2028,' he said in a statement. In the second quarter ended June 30, the port operator's net profit rose 13.7% to RM231.6mil, or 6.79 sen per share, bringing its first-half (1H25) earnings to RM454.1mil, or 13.32 sen per share. During the first half of 2025, Westports handled 5.57 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with intra-Asia trade accounting for 61% of the total volume. Its conventional segment facilitated 5.71 million metric tonnes of bulk cargo, supported by notable growth in the dry bulk segment. Westports operates around the clock with a workforce of 5,600 employees. Operational staff costs remain the company's largest cost component, rising by 8% during the period. In addition, Westports said payments to the port authority have increased following the commencement of the extended supplemental privatisation agreement on Sept 1, 2024. Westports has declared a first interim dividend of 9.93 sen per share for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025, amounting to RM338.61mil.
