A man who sexually abused and assaulted five children has been jailed for eight and a half years.
The Central Criminal Court heard that the man was in a relationship with the mother of the children and was the biological father of the younger two children.

The 53-year-old man pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault of one boy on dates between 2004 and 2011, when the child was aged between 11 and 18 years old.
He also pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault of a second boy on dates between 2006 and 2013 when the child was aged 12 and 19.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty in relation to a third boy on dates between 2013 and 2015, the boy was aged between 12 and 14.
He further pleaded guilty to sexual assault of two girls on dates in 2015. One girl was aged 14 at this time, while the second girl was aged nine.

The court heard these pleas were representative counts from an indictment with 107 charges.
It was indicated to Ms Justice Caroline Biggs on Wednesday that the victims in this case wish to retain their anonymity.
Passing sentence, Ms Justice Biggs apologised to the victims for the delay in the case coming to court and added that she is aware that she is part of that court system.
She said she had considered the 'extremely poignant and harrowing' evidence from their victim impact statements.

'The events that occurred involved coercion, control and intimidation with threats of violence and use of violence in an environment that facilitated child cruelty and sexual violence,' Ms Justice Biggs said.
She said the abuse occurred over a sustained period of time and 'involved fear, shame, degradation and confusion' on children who were supposed to be in the man's care.
'It caused them irreparable and profound psychological damage,' Ms Justice Biggs continued.
She noted from various reports before the court that the man is beginning to understand the harm he caused his children and step-children, and acknowledged that he is considered to be a medium risk for sexual re-offending and low risk for violent re-offending.

Ms Justice Biggs said the aggravating features included the fact that it involved multiple incidents with multiple victims and featured 'gratuitous degradation' of children who were under the man's care.
She said the offences represented an 'awesome breach of trust' and said the man had taken advantage of the victims' vulnerabilities.
She acknowledged his plea of guilty and the recent letter of apology indicating his remorse.
Ms Justice Biggs imposed consecutive sentences totalling 11 years and suspended the final two and a half years for two and a half years on strict conditions.

The judge said she was suspending part of the sentence to encourage rehabilitation and to give the man the opportunity to change. 'He seems to be at a stage of infancy in coming to terms with what he has done to his family,' Ms Justice Biggs remarked.
She said the other reason she was suspending part of the term was to ensure the man is supervised on his transition back into the community so that his risk of re-offending is limited.
Ms Justice Biggs thanked all of the victims, naming each of them individually, for their patience and victim impact evidence. She wished them all the best for the future.
The investigating garda told Paul Greene SC, prosecuting, that the mother of the children presented at a garda station in 2015 following the breakdown of her relationship with the man.
All five of the woman's children made disclosures of sexual, physical and emotional abuse and cruelty at the hands of the man. Two of the children were by now adults and no longer living at home. The court heard that one of the victims was a vulnerable child with a number of medical difficulties.
The complainants variously outlined being beaten by the man with implements, including with a stone rolling pin. He sexually abused four of the children and subjected them to humiliating acts of sexual violence.
They outlined how he enjoyed inflicting pain and playing cruel games with them. He pretended to knock down the family dog, who was later found to be fine, but was then sold by the man.
Following the disclosure by the family members, the man was interviewed. He denied the allegations, describing them as disgusting and nonsense.
Victim impact statements
In their victim impact statements, the siblings outlined the effects the devastating abuse had on their lives, family, mental health and relationships.
The oldest complainant told the court that as he gets older, the abuse follows him like a shadow as he replays events in his mind. He said the stigma made it hard for him to seek support, leaving him isolated in his pain. He described how the abuse has left a long-lasting impact on his life.
He said he asks himself what he could have done differently so his brothers and sisters would not have to go through what happened to them.
His younger brother described to the court how he turned to alcohol to try and blank out his pain and how this has affected every part of his life.
'He took my life away from me, and I hope he gets the justice he deserves because my life is well and truly gone,' he told the court.
The youngest boy described how his earliest memories are of being afraid. He said he believed the man enjoyed inflicting pain, only stopping when the child was emotionally broken down.
He told the court how he was locked out in all weathers and the cruel games the man played.
He described how he suffers with his mental health and self-esteem and told the court he experimented with drugs to try and block out the pain. He said he feels damaged and tainted.
The man had altered, affected and shaped every aspect of his life through his cruelty, he said.
The youngest girl told the court she feels nothing but hatred for the accused man. She said he had groomed her and breached her trust. She described how her dog had been her one comfort, but the man led her to believe he had killed her pet.
She said the accused man was a very violent man and he had ruined her and her sister's lives in so many ways. She said the trauma she endured had never left her.
She said the accused man had made everyone believe they were liars and left them with nothing because they told the secrets they were supposed to keep.
'I hope he never gets to inflict this on anyone else,' she told the court.
Her sister, who has medical difficulties and is a vulnerable person, told the court in her version of a victim impact statement that she could not get the accused out of her head when she sleeps. She said the accused man made her feel sad, and she is happy he is going to jail.
In his plea of mitigation, Hugh Hartnett SC, defending, said the man was 'restricted' to working on the family farm with his father for much of his life. He said the man was 'suffering from significant confusion in his life in relation to his sexuality and where he stood in the world'.
The court heard the man was someone who should 'never have married', that he has come out as gay, and that prior to going into custody, he was living with a new partner who was in court to support him.
He said the man is 'beginning to understand the harm he has done and is developing remorse for his actions to this family'. The man is anxious to receive therapy and counselling for the 'significant confusion in his life'. He has suffered from depression and anxiety, the court heard.
Defence counsel said the man 'saved these young people, to whom he apologises, the burden of having to come to court and give evidence before a jury'.
Prosecution counsel told the court this was the first time the man had expressed any remorse to the family.
Additional evidence
The oldest child, by now an adult, gave a statement to gardaí outlining how the man would pull down his pants and grope him during his childhood and youth. He would also expose himself to the child.
The eldest boy also described physical violence and beatings throughout the time the accused man was in his life, such as beating him with a stone rolling pin. He outlined how the accused would change the TV channel to adult pornography while the children were watching television.
He told gardaí how he had felt sad, abused and humiliated by the abuse perpetrated on him during his childhood, which ended when he left home in 2012.
The second eldest child, also a boy, gave a number of statements to gardaí outlining similar sexual and physical abuse he suffered at the hands of the accused. He said if he or his brother refused to do what the man asked, they would be punished or beaten later.
He said the accused man would punch them or hit them with 'whatever was handy', including kitchen utensils, wooden spoons, rolling pins, curtain rails and a broom.
The third child, a girl, had to be interviewed by specialist interviewers due to her particular vulnerabilities. She described the sexual abuse she suffered to the best of her abilities and indicated the man was the perpetrator.
The second youngest child, the third boy, outlined the physical violence and emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of the accused. He recalled being hit with the branch of a tree, the stick end of a brush and a metal stick. He recalled being locked out of the house and repeatedly hit in the face.
He also described how the man pretended to run over the boy's dog, and told him the dog had died. The dog was very important to the boy, and he believed his dog was dead for a number of days until it was discovered elsewhere on the property. The man later sold the dog.
He also described an incident of attempted sexual assault at the hands of the man.
The youngest child, a girl, described the accused man regularly touching her inappropriately and also recalled the man telling her that her dog was dead. He would tell her not to tell anyone what he was doing, or he would kill her dog.

Mike Lynch's widow facing damages battle as legal action from Bayesian disaster victims could wipe out her husband's estate

The widow of tech tycoon Mike Lynch could be dragged into multimillion-pound legal row as families of victims demand answers over the superyacht tragedy that killed seven, including her husband and daughter. Angela Bacares, who survived the horrific sinking of the £25 million yacht Bayesian, is now at the centre of a spiralling legal storm, with families of the five other victims preparing a multimillion-pound compensation battle that could engulf what's left of Lynch's fortune. Bacares, who is the sole shareholder of the corporate entity that owned the vessel, could find herself at the heart of the blame game, alongside the boat's management firm and insurance giant QBE. Among the seven killed were Lynch, his teenage daughter, Hannah, the vessel's cook Recaldo Thomas, Lynch's high-profile American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and British banking couple Jonathan and Judy Bloomer. A further fifteen people, including Bacares, survived, rescued by the crew of a nearby yacht in a late-night operation off the Italian coast. While Bacares is understood to have her own personal wealth shielded from the estate, she may not be entirely free from the financial fallout. Bacares is listed as the sole shareholder of Revtom, the company that owned the doomed Bayesian, and that opens the door to potential legal claims from families of the victims. James Healy-Pratt, a prominent US aviation and maritime lawyer, is representing the family of 59-year-old cook Recaldo 'Rick' Thomas, the first victim recovered by divers. He has said: 'The Thomas family are satisfied that they can establish liability for Rick's death against those entities based on the current evidence.' He confirmed that Bayesian was insured for more than $150 million by British Marine, a subsidiary of QBE, and warned that the family would soon offer the insurer a chance to resolve the case behind closed doors or face high-profile legal proceedings in the US. 'The Thomas family will shortly be offering QBE the opportunity to mediate confidentially their significant claim in the US, or face very public US legal proceedings,' he added. Meanwhile, the family of Chris and Neda Morvillo have also signalled their mounting frustration with the yacht's managers and insurers. Chris's brother, New York lawyer Greg Morvillo, has been outspoken about his determination to fight for justice on behalf of his late brother's daughters. He said: 'We had hoped that by now Camper & Nicholsons, who managed the vessel, and the insurance companies that manage the liability for the vessel, would have proactively contacted us to offer not only their condolences but also assurances that there would be no need for us to litigate the losses suffered by our nieces. 'Sadly, no such outreach has happened and our patience is running out. We do not wish to engage in a litigation, and we had thought that Camper & Nicholsons and the insurance companies would feel the same way, but it is beginning to feel inevitable. 'Through all of this, we continue to express our deepest condolences to all those who lost loved ones or who have been impacted by what we think was an avoidable tragedy.' QBE confirmed it had insured Bayesian but refused to comment further. It is understood the firm has already instructed a major US law firm to handle potential litigation. A legal insider close to the case said: 'What is an unspeakable tragedy for all is turning into a compensation fight.' Last month, Italian authorities raised the sunken yacht from the seabed as part of an ongoing criminal investigation that may not conclude until 2027. A separate British maritime inquiry is also under way and will feed into upcoming inquests. Teenager Hannah was the last to be found, hidden behind a mattress below deck. She had won a place to do English Literature at Oxford and was due to start her studies when she returned from the trip In a separate long-running civil case, Lynch - the Autonomy founder once hailed as Britain's answer to Steve Jobs - was found in 2022 to have defrauded US tech firm Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in its $11.7 billion (£8.6 billion) takeover of his software firm in 2011. HPE accused Lynch and his finance chief of cooking the books to make Autonomy appear far more valuable than it was, launching a decade-long legal saga that only deepened after his extradition to the US and eventual death in 2024. Though Mr Justice Hildyard ruled in favour of HPE, the final damages have yet to be determined. The company is seeking a staggering $4 billion - far more than the $516 million Lynch is believed to have personally received. A final judgment is now expected within days, with speculation mounting that the figure could exceed the value of Lynch's estate.

Catfish scam sees Belgian lose £26K and driving 500 miles across Europe to meet French model believing she was his 'future wife'

A Belgian man who drove almost 500 miles to meet his 'future wife' for the first time faced huge disappointment when he finally came face-to-face with the woman he'd fallen for online. In an Instagram video translated by the New York Post, a man named Michel revealed he drove 472 miles across the border to France to meet model and former beauty pageant contestant Sophie Vouzelaud, 38. The clip documented him arriving at Sophie's door - but instead of getting his fairytale ending, he was met by the model's actual husband, Fabien Boutamine. The Miss France 2007 runner-up, who is currently pregnant, denied knowing the stranger, prompting her shocked husband to say to him: 'Well, I'm the current one [her husband]. There's going to be a confrontation'. Michel claimed that he believed he was going to wed Sophie and that he had previously sent a whopping $35,000 (£26,000) to a woman who he believed to be the model. 'I have to film because there's a guy who just rang my doorbell, and he says "I'm the future husband of Sophie Vouzelaud"', said Fabian. 'Well, I'm the current one. There's going to be a confrontation' he continued. It appears the reality of the situation then dawned on Michel - whose face was never revealed during the video - when he emotionally admitted that something wasn't quite right. 'I think she played a dirty trick on me' he added. Fabian appeared resigned to the fact that another potential suitor had been scammed online. 'My wife, no, it's the fake accounts, you have to be very careful' he warned the stranger. 'I'm sorry, sir, but the problem is that Sophie puts a lot of videos on [social media] networks to say to be careful not to get hurt'. The shock factor was ramped up a notch when Michel confessed he had wired $35,000 to the suspected imposter who alleged she was pregnant and had later lost her baby. Michel also brought out his phone which purported to prove text message exchanges between himself and the fake Sophie. The exchanges seemed to touch the expectant mother, who could be heard saying, 'this hurts my heart'. 'You must keep all the evidence and take it to the police' she added. Sophie, who boasts 296,000 followers, shared the bizarre video on her Instagram page along with a caption detailing how 'sorry' she felt for Michel. 'I feel so sorry for this man' she wrote. 'Watch out for fake accounts, I'm sharing this video to show you it's real and to be vigilant! Take care of yourself'. The digital era has made it easier than ever for scammers to take advantage of unwitting victims. In May, a woman reached out for help after discovering her mother might be falling head over heels for a fake Owen Wilson. The unnamed woman shared her concerns on US forum Reddit, along with an alleged video of the Hollywood star, 56, telling her mum she is an 'amazing woman'. The poster said she tried to convince her mum that it was the workings of artificial intelligence after finding a 'plethora of red flags' such as the man mainly contacting her mother via WhatsApp voice calls. In the clip, the purported Wedding Crashers actor - who in real life was busy shooting his latest action thriller Runner in Australia - appeared to be the result of sophisticated computer graphics; most notably given away by static eye movements and a grainy facial complexion. The woman said her and her sister had tried tirelessly to inform their mother it was a grand 'scam' but lamented that 'she's just not hearing us'. After reading her plight, many users agreed that it was indeed a hoax, with one person shockingly advising the siblings to create their own AI Owen Wilson and siphon money from her to prove it. According to her mother, the odd pairing came about after a chance meeting at Yahtzee with some friends. Though the exact location was withheld, the poster said the man claimed to have mistaken her mother for someone he knew in 'real life' when he saw her at the dice game. She then explained that the two only spoke by WhatsApp, voice calls and FaceTime, which installed doubts over the genuinity of their relations. She concluded her post by asking fellow users for advice 'to definitively prove to her [mother] this is a scam'. One viewer immediately noticed the actor's 'robotic' nature, writing: 'Wow that's scary, you can tell the tone is off and robotic. Face also looks slightly different than Owen but wow that's crazy for someone who wouldn't know any better.' 'His nose and eyes are also... not human lol,' chimed another. 'Tell her to watch his nose lol,' said one person.

Inquiry launched after identities of SAS soldiers leaked in fresh data breach

Army leaders have launched an inquiry after the identities of soldiers in the SAS were revealed in a fresh data breach. Details about the elite unit, part of UK Special Forces, are usually kept so secret that its members are barred for life from discussing their involvement unless they receive prior approval. News of the breach comes just days after it emerged the Ministry of Justice had taken out an unprecedented superinjunction after up to 100,000 lives were put at risk of reprisals from the Taliban in a catastrophic data leak. Around 18,700 Afghans who applied for sanctuary in Britain after the withdrawal of western forces in 2021 had their names and contact details exposed after an MoD official emailed a secret database to trusted contacts in February 2022. A number of SAS members and MI6 operatives were also compromised in the major leak. In yet another data lapse, the Sunday Times reported that details of at least 20 Special Forces soldiers recruited from the Grenadier Guards have been publicly available online for a decade. In response, General Sir Roly Walker, the head of the army, has ordered an 'immediate review' of the data sharing arrangements that led to the incident. At least 20 least 20 SAS members have been named by two different regimental publications over more than a decade, according to the newspaper. The Grenadier Guards in-house publication included a roll call of the names and current deployments of its most senior officers. In the latest edition, published last year and available online, the names of ten men in the regiment allegedly appeared next to the codename 'MAB' — shorthand for MoD A Block, which is the site of the UK Special Forces headquarters at the Regent's Park Barracks in London. The codename is well-known in military circles and means enemies would know which soldiers were linked to an elite unit. The breaches were first reported in April and while another regiment removed similar publications, the remaining information on the Guards was only taken down on Friday. Those whose details were compromised have been notified and protected, it is understood. General Sir Roly Walker said: 'The security of our people is of the utmost importance and we take any breach extremely seriously. '[As a result of this incident], I have directed an immediate review into our data sharing arrangements with our regimental and corps associations to ensure appropriate guidance and safeguards are in place to best support the vital work they do.'
