Comedian Russell Brand denies rape and sex assault charges in UK court
British actor and comedian Russell Brand pleaded not guilty in a London court on Friday to charges of rape and sexual assault relating to four women more than two decades ago.
Brand, once one of Britain's most high-profile broadcasters and former husband of U.S. pop singer Katy Perry, appeared at Southwark Crown Court and denied all five criminal charges.
The 49-year-old has consistently denied having non-consensual sex since allegations were first aired two years ago.
British prosecutors announced in April that Brand had been charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault against four women between 1999 and 2005.
Brand, who previously gave his address as being in England but also lives in the U.S., is due to stand trial in June 2026.
He spoke only to confirm his name and enter his five not guilty pleas, before leaving the court with his lawyer and some companions.
PREVIOUS DENIAL
After the charges were first announced, Brand said in a video posted on social media that in his younger days, before getting married and having children, he had been a fool and a sex addict but "what I never was, was a rapist".
In the 2000s, Brand was a regular on British screens, known for his flamboyant style and appearance.
He worked for the BBC and starred in a number of films including "Get Him to the Greek" before marrying Perry in 2010. They divorced 14 months later.
By the early 2020s, he had faded from mainstream culture, appearing primarily on his internet channel where he airs his views on U.S. politics and free speech.
In September 2023, the Sunday Times and Channel 4 TV's "Dispatches" show reported allegations of sex offenses against him. Police began investigating some weeks later.
Brand, who said last year he had become a Christian, rejected those accusations.

Russian Air Defences Shoot down Four Drones Headed for Moscow, Mayor Says
July 5 (Reuters) – Russian air defences shot down four Ukrainian drones headed for Moscow on Saturday, the city's mayor said, while one of the capital's main airports temporarily halted outgoing flights. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency services were working at the sites of the downed drones, but gave no information on potential damage. Russia's Defence Ministry, in a report on Telegram, said air defence units had destroyed 48 Ukrainian drones in a period of just over five hours into Saturday evening. Those included five drones in the region surrounding Moscow, two of which were headed for the capital. The Defence Ministry report said the total included 17 drones over Bryansk Region on the Ukrainian border and 11 in adjacent Oryol Region. The governor of Belgorod Region on the border said four Ukrainian drones had injured a bus driver and a man driving a car. An earlier Defence Ministry report said 94 drones had been destroyed over Russia overnight on Saturday and 45 more in just under six hours during the day. Officials at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport reported delays in departures after flights were temporarily paused. Civil Aviation Authority Rosaviatsiya said the measures were taken in response to 'restrictions' over the capital's airspace as well as strong winds. Rosaviatsiya said incoming and outgoing flights at airports in several other Russian cities were also temporarily halted, including at St Petersburg's Pulkovo airport, citing safety concerns.

Otani's ‘Night of Baba Yaga' Wins Dagger Award in London; Violent Novel Hailed for Exceptional Literary Quality
LONDON — 'I believe you all love blood, murder, crime and violence as much as I do — in fiction, of course,' said novelist Akira Otani on Thursday in London. Otani, 44, was calmly expressing her joy at the award ceremony on Thursday where she was presented the Dagger for Crime Fiction in Translation for 'The Night of Baba Yaga,' which has been lauded for its exceptional literary quality and thrilling narrative. This recognition from a prestigious British mystery literary award comes at a time when translated Japanese works are receiving significant attention in Europe and the United States. 'I believe that people who enjoy violent fiction are the ones who must strive for peace in the real world,' she said. Translated by Sam Bett, the novel centers on a woman who uses violence to survive and the daughter of a crime boss whom she guards. Together, they resist male oppression and forge an indefinable bond. During the selection process, Otani's work narrowly beat out Asako Yuzuki's 'Butter,' published under the Shincho Bunko imprint of Shinchosha Publishing Co. The judges praised Otani's work, stating its depiction of the yakuza world is like a manga filled with merciless violence that highlights the characters' deep humanity. It overflows with originality and effectively tells a strange love story, they said. Baba Yaga is an ogress from Russian folklore. Although the work contains vivid depictions of violence, Otani explained: 'There are times when every woman wishes they were strong. In a novel, I can make them go wild in any way I want. I wanted to depict a fantasy and not let it end there.' Otani started writing around age 19. She worked various jobs concurrently, such as a security guard and call center worker, before transitioning to a full-time writing career around 30. 'The Night of Baba Yaga' was shortlisted for the Mystery Writers of Japan Award in the category of best novel and series of short stories. However, Otani does not limit herself to writing mysteries and crime novels. She also produces a variety of genres, including short story collections that portray women struggling with life. 'I am considered an ambiguous writer. The protagonists of my work also have relationships and lives that cannot be labeled,' she said at the award ceremony. 'I believe that embracing ambiguity in ourselves and acknowledging the ambiguity of others makes the world a better place.' In recent years, works of Japanese literature translated into English have received high acclaim abroad. This year alone, Hiromi Kawakami's 'Under the Eye of the Big Bird' was a finalist for the Booker Prize, and Yuzuki's 'Butter' was selected as the Waterstones Book of the Year for 2024 by the major British bookstore chain. The Daggers were founded in 1955.
