Kelington wins wafer hook-up job in Germany
PETALING JAYA: Kelington Group Bhd , via its wholly-owned subsidiary Kelington Engineering (Germany) GmbH (KEGG), has accepted a letter of intent (LOI) for a semiconductor hook-up project in Dresden, Germany. Based on the estimated scope for the first phase, the integrated engineering solutions provider said the total contract value is estimated at a minimum of €30mil (approximately RM146mil), with the potential to increase to €50mil, subject to the final configuration to be determined by the client. The LOI establishes a framework for detailed discussions on KEGG's provision of hook-up services for key process systems involving specialty gases, chemicals, slurry, bulk gases, process vacuum and ultra-pure water. 'It also sets out the agreed unit pricing structure and price adjustment clauses, which will remain in effect until 2027. 'This long-term arrangement positions KEGG to undertake follow-on work as this semiconductor wafer fabrication plant expands, without the need for renegotiation on core pricing terms.' Kelington said the LOI marks its major entry into the European market.

China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis on rideshare app Lyft
Baidu's fleet of Apollo Go driverless cars will be avaiable on Lyft in Germany and Britain. (EPA Images pic) BEIJING : Chinese internet giant Baidu plans to launch its robotaxis on rideshare app Lyft in Germany and Britain in 2026, pending regulatory approval, the two companies said today. Last month, Baidu announced a similar agreement with Uber in Asia and the Middle East as it seeks to take pole position in the competitive autonomous driving field both at home and abroad. Lyft and Baidu said today that 'in the following years' the fleet of Apollo Go driverless cars will be expanded to thousands of vehicles across Europe. They did not specify which other countries the cars would be deployed in, and it was not clear how long it might take to gain regulatory approval for the initial deployment. Driverless taxis are already on some roads with limited capacity in the US and China, most notably in the central city of Wuhan, where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas. Their reach is spreading, with Shanghai's financial district Pudong recently announcing a batch of permits for multiple companies to operate robotaxis. China's tech companies and automakers have poured billions of dollars into self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving the new battleground in the country's cutthroat domestic car market. Baidu is not alone among Chinese companies in searching to expand its foothold abroad. Its rival WeRide is also active in the Gulf region, and in January announced it had been picked to lead a small pilot project in Switzerland. another Chinese company, said in May that it had signed a deal to launch its self-driving taxis on Uber in 'a key market in the Middle East later this year'. San Francisco-based Lyft in April said it had agreed to buy German taxi app Freenow, planting a flag in the European market. The acquisition marked Lyft's 'most significant expansion outside North America', the group said.

Italian competition authority fines China's Shein €1mil
Shein was fined for misleading customers about the environmental impact of its products. (AFP pic) ROME : Italy's competition authority (AGCM) today announced a €1 million fine on Chinese fast fashion online retailer Shein for misleading customers on the environmental impact of its products. The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Co Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein's website in Europe, at the end of a 'greenwashing' investigation that the Italian watchdog had opened in September. AGCM said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility claims promoted on Shein's website 'were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading'. The Italian authority said its assessment was influenced by an 'increased duty of care' falling on Shein, 'because it operates in (the) highly polluting sector and with highly polluting methods' of fast and super-fast fashion. Reuters has contacted the company for a comment. When the investigation was launched last year, the company said it was 'ready to cooperate openly with relevant Italian authorities, providing the necessary support and information to address any inquiries'.
