Top WNBA Team Suffers Major Blow on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It was a busy night in the WNBA on Tuesday as 12 out of the 13 teams in the league were in action.
One of the biggest games of the evening came in the form of the Minnesota Lynx hosting the Las Vegas Aces at Target Center in a pivotal Commissioner's Cup matchup.

In the end, it was the Lynx who secured a crucial win of 76-62 which saw them clinch the No. 1 spot in the West for the Commissioner's Cup. This means that Minnesota is now headed to the championship game on July 1. They will defend their title against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, who clinched their spot in the Final with an 88-71 win over the Connecticut Sun.
The bad news for the Lynx is that they lost their best player in Tuesday's game. This is after Napheesa Collier was forced to exit the contest in the third quarter due to a back issue.
Minnesota later announced that Collier would not be able to return to the game due to the injury. She finished with seven points on 3-of-9 shooting, six rebounds and one assist in 19 minutes of action.

The details of Collier's injury have not yet been revealed, and it remains to be seen if the four-time All-Star will be forced to miss time because of this problem.

The Lynx should provide an update on their star forward's injury soon, but until then, Collier's status for Minnesota's home game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday will be up in the air.
Collier has been the backbone of the Lynx's success this season. The reigning Commissioner's Cup MVP entered Tuesday's win averaging 26.1 points on 53.3% shooting, 8.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.6 blocks and 1.6 triples per game.
Minnesota currently occupies the No. 1 spot in the WNBA with an 11-1 record, and they would not be where they are right now had it not been for Collier's dominant play.

Kerry Carpenter crushes key home run in Detroit Tigers' 6-3 win vs new-look Twins

Not only did the Minnesota Twins part ways with one-third of the players on their roster, they also shipped out some of their best players at the trade deadline: closer Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies, reliever Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays and shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros. Two years ago, the Twins won the American League Central. In 2025, the Detroit Tigers are the AL Central leaders, and looked like in Monday night. The Tigers reminded their division foes of their current dominance in a 6-3 win over the new-look Twins on Monday, Aug. 4, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park. The Twins didn't go down easy, but the Tigers (66-48) pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning, including a 437-foot two-run home run from Kerry Carpenter off right-handed reliever Noah Davis with the fans chanting his first name. Carpenter celebrated the key home run by flipping his bat, holding both arms in the air and trotting to first base. After Gleyber Torres tied the game on a groundout, Carpenter refused to swing at back-to-back pitches for balls before demolishing a 94 mph sinker at the top of the strike zone for a two-run homer, putting the Tigers ahead, 5-3. It was his 19th homer in 85 games this season. The Tigers padded their lead in the seventh inning, thanks to Dillon Dingler's solo home run off right-handed reliever Erasmo Ramírez. He pulled a down-and-in sinker over the wall in left field. It was Dingler's 10th homer. Dingler is hitting .274 with a .749 OPS across 85 games in his first full season in the big leagues. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] Casey Mize's quality start Right-hander Casey Mize allowed three runs on four hits and zero walks with four strikeouts in six innings, throwing 67 pitches. He entered Monday's game with an 11.42 ERA in his last three starts — following a 2.63 ERA in his first 15 starts. This was a step forward. In 2025, Mize now owns a 3.50 ERA in 19 starts. The Twins tagged Mize for three solo home runs: Ryan Jeffers hit a 94.4 mph sinker for a 420-foot homer in the first inning; Trevor Larnach hit a splitter for a 434-foot homer in the fifth inning; Matt Wallner hit a splitter for a 437-foot homer in the sixth inning. Both splitters were poorly executed pitches. The homer from Wallner landed in the shrubs in center field. Aside from the homers, Mize gave up just one hit on a single to Edouard Julien in the sixth inning, then erased Julien from the bases when Austin Martin grounded into a double play. Wenceel Pérez's development The Tigers fell behind on the scoreboard, but Wenceel Pérez revived them when he hit a two-run home run off right-hander Travis Adams with one out in the fifth inning. Until then, Adams had shut out the Tigers. The Pérez homer tied the game, 2-2. It was Pérez's ninth home run in 54 games (and 197 plate appearances) in his second MLB season — following nine homers in 112 games (and 425 plate appearances) as a rookie last season. Not only has Pérez developed in the power department from Year 1 to Year 2, but he has also improved his batting average (.242 to .262) and his OPS (.683 to .805). For the Twins, Adams allowed two runs on four hits and zero walks with seven strikeouts in five innings, throwing 63 pitches. He generated 16 whiffs on 33 swings for an incredible 48.5% whiff rate. Ime Udoka, Fred VanVleet traveled to Turkey to work with Rockets star Alperen Sengun

With Alperen Sengun spending more time than usual in Turkey in the 2025 offseason, the Rockets sent even more big names there to work with him. All-Star center Alperen Sengun spends at least a portion of each NBA offseason in his native Turkey. He typically still works out and does basketball activities in the gym during that time, but it's an opportunity for the 23-year-old to be surrounded by family and friends from his homeland for at least a few weeks. In the 2025 offseason, however, the Rockets star is spending a bit more time at home due to his inclusion on Turkey's FIBA EuroBasket 2025 squad (which opens play later this month). So, rather than waiting for Sengun to eventually return to his NBA home, Houston is sending its leadership to him. As shown in photos posted on the team's official social media accounts, head coach Ime Udoka and starting point guard Fred VanVleet each recently spent time with Sengun in a Turkish gym. It's nothing too out of the ordinary. In past offseasons, it was typically an assistant coach from the Rockets that went to visit Sengun in Turkey. But with expectations higher than ever after the Kevin Durant trade and Sengun's timeline for returning to the United States delayed due to the EuroBasket competition, the Rockets sent even bigger names to Turkey in 2025. The hope is that it allows Sengun, VanVleet, and the rest of their teammates on the 2025-26 Rockets to hit the ground running when training camps open around October 1. In 2024-25, Sengun averaged 19.1 points and a career-high 10.3 rebounds in earning his first career All-Star honors. Houston went 52-30 and finished at No. 2 in the Western Conference standings, and Sengun led the Rockets in rebounding while finishing second in scoring and assists on a per-game basis. Astros reunite with Carlos Correa in Twins blockbuster trade

The post Astros reunite with Carlos Correa in Twins blockbuster trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros have reunited with a franchise legend. Carlos Correa has been traded from the Minnesota Twins back to the Astros ahead of the MLB trade deadline. After leaving Houston in free agency before the 2022 season, Correa had an up-and-down run in the Twin Cities. Now, he is back with his original team in a deadline day stunner. 'Astros are finalizing deal for Correa now,' Jon Heyman reported, finishing off a thread of Correa reports throughout the day. Correa is under contract through at least 2028 and has vesting options that can take him through 2032. A fire sale continues for the Twins while the Astros keep adding. Correa joins Jhoan Duran and Harrison Bader as players the Twins have sold at this deadline. With the injuries in their infield, Houston pounced on a seller. The Astros were dealt brutal news on Isaac Paredes earlier on MLB trade deadline day. The third baseman will be out for the season with a hamstring injury, according to Bob Nightengale. They also brought in Ramon Urias from the Baltimore Orioles earlier in the day to help with injuries. Jeremy Peña, who succeeded Correa at short, has also been out with an injury. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports that Correa will play third base for the Astros. ESPN's Jeff Passan spoke on the deadline drama involving this deal. 'The Carlos Correa-to-Houston deal looked dead 24 hours ago. They revisited, bridged a significant financial gap, and Houston, with Isaac Paredes out for the season, welcomes home Correa, who waived his no-trade clause to approve the deal.' The Astros have also been connected to starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Sandy Alcantara at the MLB trade deadline. They have lost Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco to Tommy John surgery this year. Can they pick up a big starter to make this a home run deadline?
