Tesco shoppers divided over new £3 'sweet sandwich' in meal deal
Tesco has shoppers split over the latest item added to the famous meal deal combo - with some branding it as "delicious" and others are wondering who to blame for its creation. Some might find the sandwich a little too sweet compared to other flavours on the menu - but it's certainly fit for a celebration.
A supermarket shopper posted about the item when spotting it in their local Tesco store on Monday, August 4. Sasha Beeney posted a picture to the Extreme Bargains and Couponing UK Facebook page about the dessert-style sandwich, and within an hour, it was flooded with comments.
Costing £3 on its own, the Birthday Cake Sandwich is made up of "sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam", according to the packaging itself. It can be bundled with a snack and drink as part of the existing meal deal.
The packaging reads: "Get it while you can. Enjoy the sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam. An all-time favourite treat in an all-time favourite deal."
One said: "This one looks really yummy!" Another joked: "When it's your birthday but you have to go to work!"
People were quick to compare this new Tesco treat with 31g of sugar to the viral M&S sandwich filled with strawberries and cream. The Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich cost £2.80, was released around the same time as Wimbledon in June 2025 and took over the internet.
A third Tesco shopper wrote: "At least there are two sandwiches in this one!" Someone else put: "What in the M&S [alternative] is this! Deffo need to try it though!"
A fifth said: "Looks delicious!" And, one more shopper shared what others can expect: "Had this and it actually surprises you. It's quite nice - more like a jam sandwich but the cream cheese gives a nice sweet after taste."
Not everyone was convinced though, as someone commented: "This is getting ridiculous now!" and another added: "What are they going to come up with next? I can't think of anything worse!"
A third critic commented: "Jeez they will put anything between a couple of slices of bread these days! Just because you can doesn't mean you should!"
A Tesco meal deal costs £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without a Clubcard. According to Tesco, this price applies to the standard meal deal, which includes a sandwich (now including cake), wrap, pasta, or salad alongside a snack and a drink.
The new Birthday Cake Sandwich is marketed as being limited edition - so it won't be around forever. Shoppers who are interested in trying on for themselves should see if any are available in the supermarket's to-go section.

As a fashion writer who spends most of her time hunting down trends, the most recent crops of trends – from gingham dresses to ballet flats – have me wondering if I should've held onto my school uniform, and at this point, my PE kit all along. On today's episode of fashion déjà vu, yet another item I used to stuff into my kit bag has now emerged from the shadows of the school sports hall to become a bona fide (and somehow chic) must-have. Thanks in large part to the aftermath of Challengers last year and the hundreds of Wimbledon looks, 'tenniscore' has now volleyed its way into fashion weeks worldwide. Crisp whites, pleated skirts, and polo tops have already been modernised, and now, it's the skort's turn to get the 2025 treatment. Far from the skorts you wore to PE class made from clingy sweat-wicking nylon (shudder), you'll now find the classic in a variety of fabrics: linen, cotton, even suede. Both celebrities and designers have signed off on the skort trend, with Gucci debuting the skort suit back in its spring/summer 2024 show at Milan Fashion Week. Alessandro Michele sent models down the runway wearing a grey two-piece, nude scoopneck bodysuit, and platform monogrammed mules – a look that caught the eye of our forever style-inspiration Bella Hadid, who wore it in May last year. If you want to dip your toe in the skort trend, the high street is packed with lots of affordable options too. For those rediscovering the skort, stick to the off-white and black iterations, and pair with a linen shirt, raffia bag (perhaps this Nobody's Child style I waxed lyrical about last week) and flat sandals for a look that wouldn't be out of place in the South of France. The chocolate brown is a good alternative for individuals trying to branch out from black, so style it with a white or beige tank top and Miu Miu-esque brown leather boat shoes. Instead of rummaging through old Leavers hoodies, the comeback of the skort could just be a good excuse to invest in a new one, albeit a more fashion-forward one. Cleverly sitting in the spot that's so often missed by fashion, the skort is both incredibly practical and nostalgic, meaning you won't have to constantly readjust in the same way you would a miniskirt. Yes, Paris Hilton might've said that 'skirts should be the size of a belt', but the skort quietly disagrees, offering the same look, without the risk. And let's face it, Hilton is far less likely to flash someone while sitting cross-legged on the train than we are. Abercrombie & Fitch, Scarlett Mid Rise Vegan Suede Mini Skort Abercrombie's take on a skort is one that's incredibly, well, 2025. Made from soft vegan suede and available in light brown, brown and a grape leaf olive, the skort features modest lining underneath, an elasticated waist and a side zipper. Moncler, Shell Cargo Mini Skort Moncler's skort is a utilitarian iteration, thanks to its statement D-ring embellishment, small pocket at the front and khaki belt. Style with a tank top and Adidas trainers for an easy everyday look. Gap, Beige Bubble Mini Skort A combination of two different trends – the skort and the bubble skirt, this skort is perfect for summer. Finished with a flattering bubble hem, inner shorts and belt loops, the skort can easily be dressed up with a bodysuit, oversized blazer and kitten heels. Reformation, Eva Linen Skirt Another great linen skort comes from Reformation, and its design screams picnics in the park and rooftop drinks.
