UAE active, innovative backer of humanitarian responses worldwide: UN
ABU DHABI (WAM) UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has affirmed that the UAE is an active and innovative backer of humanitarian responses worldwide. He highlighted that year after year, the country is supporting the UN's efforts to provide vital aid to the most vulnerable around the globe.Fletcher, who was appointed in November 2024, emphasised in a statement to WAM that humanitarian action is embedded in the culture and prioritised by the country's leaders. He pointed out that collaborating with the UAE is driven by the energy, ideas and problem-solving mentality inherent in the country's approach to crises.Regarding the strategy for enhancing global humanitarian response and accelerating the pace of emergency relief aid delivery, Fletcher stated, "As Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, I coordinate the UN humanitarian sector – but in my role as Emergency Relief Chief, I also chair the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), the body that coordinates the global humanitarian community, including NGOs."Fletcher also revealed the launch of a bold plan to further spur efficiency in the humanitarian sector following a meeting of IASC heads in Geneva last week. He said, "We are working to be lighter, faster and less bureaucratic – to reduce duplication and define our lifesaving work more clearly. At a time when more than 300 million people around the world urgently need support, we must deliver that assistance more effectively."He continued, "We will continue to broaden our partner base, including by stepping up engagement with the private sector, World Bank and the broader public. I believe there is a movement of billions of people who care and will stand in solidarity with those in need of assistance and protection."On UAE-UN humanitarian cooperation, Fletcher affirmed that the UAE is an active and innovative backer of humanitarian responses worldwide, consistently supporting UN efforts to provide critical assistance to vulnerable groups worldwide. This includes efforts in Gaza, where the UAE committed nearly $223 million to the "Flash Appeal for the Occupied Palestinian Territory" initiative. He also mentioned a UAE-drafted UN Security Council resolution, adopted in December 2023, which demanded the immediate, safe, and unhindered delivery of large-scale humanitarian assistance directly to Palestinian civilians throughout Gaza.Fletcher also highlighted the UAE's critical support to the Humanitarian Fund overseen by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), ensuring that those closest to communities in need have the means to respond to crisis."The UN is grateful for the UAE's engagement to deliver lifesaving assistance, both in the region and beyond," he stated.Discussing the role of innovation and AI in supporting global humanitarian needs, Fletcher highlighted the ongoing efforts to leverage AI and innovation to enhance humanitarian response and adapt to future challenges."In the UAE, we see that innovation and strive to learn from it," he said.He explained that OCHA, through the Centre for Humanitarian Data in The Hague, has been exploring predictive analytics that can drive anticipatory action to get ahead of a crisis. "We want to foster partnerships across the world – including here in the UAE – that help us build capacity and community around innovation," he added.Addressing challenges in the humanitarian field, Fletcher noted that workers are facing a polycrisis that is driving needs around the world, with growing needs and increasingly complex challenges. He pointed out climate change as a major challenge, with OCHA launching a Climate Action Account as part of the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to help finance humanitarian responses to climate shocks. In conclusion, Fletcher commended the UAE's humanitarian efforts, including the establishment of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, followed by a dedicated body to implement lifesaving support for those in need, the UAE Aid Agency.
The UAE also hosts the world's largest humanitarian logistics hub, Dubai Humanitarian, which has been critically important to global response efforts.

Nothing Phone (3) launches in UAE: Fans flock to Dubai Mall for early access
On the eve of the official UAE launch of the Nothing Phone (3) and Headphone (1), a crowd began to gather hours in advance at Sharaf DG, Dubai Mall. Some came out of pure loyalty. Others came for the exclusive #Drops100 campaign, which promised early access to the brand's newest devices — and even better, a surprise upgrade deal. The offer is that if you purchase the Nothing Phone (3) priced at Dh3,299, you'll get the Headphone (1) at no additional cost. Organised by Nothing Tech as part of a global initiative across select cities including Dubai, the #Drops100 campaign is a gesture of gratitude to the brand's fast-growing fanbase. 'The #Drops100 campaign is about rewarding our community,' said Rishi Kishor Gupta, Nothing's Regional Director for the Middle East and Africa. 'We're doing this in a few key markets ahead of the official launch, and Dubai is a major one for us.' If the early access wasn't enough, Gupta also revealed that on July 18, launch day buyers of the 12GB + 256GB version of the Phone (3) will receive a free automatic upgrade to the 16GB + 512GB model — plus a complimentary pair of Nothing earphones. During the #Drops100 campaign in Dubai Mall's Sharaf DG, the first one to get his hands on the Nothing Phone (3) was Faisal Obaid, a local Emirati who's been first in line at every Nothing launch for the last two years. 'I came before 4pm today. I had to be here,' he said. 'The design is the best thing they offer. It's detailed, different from any other brand. And every year, the performance just keeps getting better.' Faisal chose the black variant, praising the Glyph interface and the brand's bold approach to standing out in a market crowded with lookalikes. From Sri Lanka to Finland The event also drew an enthusiastic mix of Dubai residents. A group from Sri Lanka raved about Nothing OS, calling the software 'the smoothest we've used.' Malik Shibli, a Dubai-based user of the Nothing Phone (1), said he's been holding out for the right upgrade: 'The new camera system is what I'm most excited for.' Chantelle, originally from South Africa, came to buy the phone as a birthday gift for her son, who is currently in Finland. 'He's been tracking this release for months and asked me if I can get it today,' she said. "So here I am." Meanwhile, Abdul, a Palestinian expat using the Nothing Phone (2), shared what draws him to the brand: 'It doesn't feel like just another slab of metal. It's personal. Every detail matters and that's why I'm here.' The turnout reflected what Nothing is gradually building in the region: a cult following rooted in thoughtful design, playful innovation, and an ecosystem-first approach. And for many who lined up, the wait was worth it. The Nothing Phone (3) officially launches in UAE on July 18, with with two configurations of the Phone (3): 12GB + 256GB, priced at Dh2,999 and 16GB + 512GB, priced at Dh3,299.

Israeli strikes kill 22 in Gaza, two die in church
Israeli forces killed at least 22 people in attacks in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, including two people who died in a strike on a church that late Pope Francis used to speak to regularly, medics and church officials said. Eight men tasked with protecting aid trucks were reported among the dead in airstrikes that were carried out while mediators continued ceasefire talks in Doha. A US official said this week the talks were going well but two officials from the Palestinian group Hamas told Reuters there had been no breakthrough as the Israeli military continued to pummel Gaza. A man and a woman died, and several people were wounded in "an apparent strike by the Israeli army" on Gaza's Holy Family Church, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said in a statement. The Holy Family Church in Gaza spoke in a separate statement of "a number of injured, some in critical condition." In a telegram for the victims, Pope Leo said he was "deeply saddened" and called for "an immediate ceasefire." The pope expressed his "profound hope for dialogue, reconciliation and enduring peace in the region," according to the telegram which was signed by the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said they were "aware of reports regarding damage caused to the Holy Family Church in Gaza City and casualties at the scene. The circumstances of the incident are under review." "The IDF makes every feasible effort to mitigate harm to civilians and civilian structures, including religious sites, and regrets any damage caused to them," the statement added. Israel's foreign ministry said in a statement on X that the results of the investigation would be published. It also said the country did not target churches or religious sites and regretted harm to them or civilians. The Patriarchate earlier said the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli, was among those injured, and his church had sustained damage. Father Romanelli, an Argentine, used to regularly update the late Pope Francis about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict via calls and messages. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni blamed Israel for the strike on the religious compound. "The attacks against the civilian population that Israel has been carrying out for months are unacceptable. No military action can justify such an attitude," she said in a statement.
