What Madeleine McCann's twin siblings are doing now after ‘living in her shadow'
She was three when she vanished while on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007. Her parents, Kate and Gerry, marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance last month.
There has been no positive sighting of her since, with the trail remaining as cold now as it was nearly two decades ago.
New searches have begun in Praia da Luz and a 26-mile stretch of scrubland between the resort and the Foral where German suspect Christian Brueckner lived in 2003.
The new searches for Madeleine, who would have celebrated her 22nd birthday last month, were requested by German police.
They face a race against time to charge Brueckner before he is released from prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
In their most tribute to Madeleine, who would also be turning 22 this month, Kate and Gerry McCann said: 'No matter how near or far she is, she continues to be right here with us, every day, but especially on her special day.
'We continue to 'celebrate' her as the very beautiful and unique person she is. We miss her.'
But Madeleine isn't Kate and Gerry's only child – she also has twin younger siblings, Amelie and Sean, who were born in 2005.
A family friend said of twins Amelie and Sean: 'They've always been in Madeleine's shadow, and just been the McCann twins.
'But now they are young adults, they are carving out their own lives.'
Today, both are studying at different universities.
Amelie, who studies at Durham University is described as popular and outgoing and has competed in triathlons in the past.
Speaking for the first time about her sister's disappearance at a vigil two years ago, she commented: 'It's nice that everyone is here together, but it's a sad occasion.'
Meanwhile, Sean studies chemical engineering at the University of Loughborough and is a champion freestyle swimmer
He's been tipped to represent Scotland at next year's Commonwealth Games – and could even compete for Team GB at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Previously, Sean represented Scotland at the 2023 Youth Commonwealth Games, taking part in the 400 and 1500m Freestyle finals, and is part of the country's National Open Water Development Squad for open water swimming.
Sean explained how he first started swimming competitively in a post on a local website after winning a grant to fund his training.
He said: 'At the age of 10, I was selected to swim at City of Leicester, and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles, as well as becoming regional and national champion in my age group.
'In order to have achieved this, I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train.'
Their parents have said the twins are grateful to be able to 'live a relatively normal and enjoyable life now', despite the continued heartbreak over their missing big sister.
More recently, Kate said: 'They have their own friends and they keep busy and they're really sporty but their only wish is for their big sister to come home.'
Kate had been a GP but left her job when Maddie vanished. She returned to the healthcare sector during the pandemic.
She now works with people with dementia and is an ambassador for the charity Missing People.
In their recent statement, the couple thanked the charity and other organisations 'who remain committed, despite many challenges and limited resources, to finding and bringing home the many missing and abducted children'.
Gerry McCann is a research lead and professor of cardiac imaging at the University of Leicester, whose 'life-changing work' has been praised by colleagues.
They still live in the same redbrick detached house in Rothley, Leicestershire, where they resided when the toddler disappeared.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, family friend Michelle Canilleri said: 'I have seen this family's grief from the very beginning to now.
'Our hearts go out to them, and the village as a whole hopes they get the answers they so desperately need.'
But as well as deep sympathy, the couple have also been on the receiving end of personal attacks and further anguish.
Two women are accused of stalking the McCann family, including turning up at their home.
Polish national Julia Wandel is due to stand trial in October this year accused of causing serious alarm or distress to the family between June 2022 and February 2025.
Wandel made global headlines in 2023 after claiming to be Madeleine and has continued to speak out on social media despite those claims being rubbished by a DNA test.
She is said to have made calls, left voicemails, and sent a letter and WhatsApp messages to Kate and Gerry, as well as sending their other children, Sean and Amelie, Instagram messages.
Karen Spragg has also denied stalking, allegedly by making calls, sending letters and attending the McCann's home. Kate and Gerry still share updates on the Find Madeleine website.
One section is headed 'Why do we continue?'
Underneath it reads: 'There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Madeleine has been harmed. Madeleine is still missing, and someone needs to be looking for her. She is young and vulnerable and needs our help. We love her dearly and miss her beyond words.'

Brit siblings, 11 & 13, who drowned on ‘dream' Spain hols were ‘water babies' who went swimming every day, family says
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Brit siblings who drowned during their "dream" holiday in Spain were "water babies" who used to swim every day, their family revealed. Ameiya Parris and Ricardo Junior Parris tragically died on Tuesday while on holiday at Llarga beach in Salou, near Tarragona. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 7 Ameiya Parris and Ricardo Junior Parris drowned during their 'dream' holiday in Spain Credit: Facebook 7 Family say the kids were 'water babies' who used to swim every day 7 Ameiya and Ricardo Jr were in the water with dad Ricardo Sr when the trio were swept up in the difficult waters Credit: Supplied 7 The siblings, known as Maya and Jubs, were enjoying a family holiday with their parents and four other children. Their aunty Kayla Delbrocco from Birmingham said the kids had been swimming "every day' in the sea - and would have had no reason to believe they were in danger. She told The Sun: 'It was supposed to be a special day - the kids love the beach, they go every day. 'They've always been water babies - they'd been in every day. We had gone on holiday together there six years ago, so they were excited to go back and knew what to expect. 'It's beautiful out there. They were older, so they could remember, but their younger siblings hadn't experienced it before. So it was nice that the six of them were going.' Aunty Kayla said the family headed to the beach just before 8.30pm on Tuesday for their nightly swim, just half an hour after lifeguards clocked off. Ameiya and Ricardo Jr, known lovingly as Maya and Jubs, were in the water with dad Ricardo Sr, when the trio were swept up in the difficult waters, with the alarm raised just before 8.50pm. Kayla continued: 'They weren't even that far in - they've been going there the same time every day. It was just another day for them. 'It doesn't look like it's dangerous - They had like a yellow flag saying you're safe to go in, but just be careful. 'We've come to learn that the beach was dangerous; someone had died in the morning, the same day. A 54-year-old German man died the same day as the little ones. Heartbreaking tributes to Brit friends, 27 & 29, who both drowned in Algarve holiday pool in 'unimaginable' tragedy 'There was no word about it or anything - no warning. We've come to learn that there have been 16/17 deaths there in the past month.' Ricardo Sr desperately tried to save Maya and Jubs, but got into trouble himself in what was described as 'stormy' seas off the Spanish beach. Their mum, Shanice, had taken the other four children to the toilet before returning to the dramatic scenes. Aunty Kayla said: 'When it happened, my sister [Shanice] went to take the little ones to the bathroom. Then, when she came back, there was everyone everywhere.' Emergency services rushed to the aid of the trio, and managed to revive Ricardo Jr, and with Maya and Jubs, Kayla said medics 'tirelessly tried to revive them'. She said: 'They managed to save Ricardo Sr Junior was airlifted straight to the hospital and Maya was worked on at the beach.' 7 Ameiya and Ricardo Junior tragically drowned off the coast of Spain 7 7 The siblings, known as Maya and Jubs, were enjoying a family holiday with their parents and four other children But tragically, despite the efforts of emergency services, Maya and Jubs both passed away - leaving the entire family devastated. Kayla said: '[Ricardo Sr and Shanice] are going through the motions, they're keeping it together. They wouldn't be able to do it without each other. 'This is the first holiday where there were six [children] and they hadn't been on holiday for some time. 'They've been doing everything they can to make sure the [four] little ones are engaged. It's been a difficult time for them.' Kayla confirmed that repatriation teams had been in contact with the family and that 'paperwork was ready' - with parents Shanice and Ricardo insisting they won't leave Salou without Maya and Jubs. She added: 'They are staying there until they can bring the kids home - they won't leave without them.' A GoFundMe was made by family friend Holly Marquis-Johnson in honour of Maya and Jubs, to help ' ease some of the financial burden' of repatriation and to give the 'dignified farewell they deserve'. Leaving a heartbreaking tribute on the fundraiser, Holly wrote: 'Maya was intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman. Ricardo Junior was playful, kind, and always smiling. 'They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them.' The GoFundMe, which had a target of £15,000, has raised over £39,000 at the time of writing, with an outpouring of support from donors. In a statement sent as a voice message to The Sun, Kayla expressed her gratitude to the public for the overwhelming support. She said: 'We want to give our thanks as family for all the kindness and overwhelming generosity of the national community. 'Times are really difficult for everyone, yet people still sacrificed what they can to support our baby sister [Shanice] and Ricardo in this living nightmare. 'Our babies can come home now and we can all start grieving together. Thanks will never be enough, but sincere thanks from our hearts is all we can give you right now. 'We really appreciate what you have all done. Thank you.' It comes after six-year-old Casius, who was also on the trip, is now trying to make sense of the unimaginable tragedy. Casius is said to have told his mother: "Did you know Maya and Jubs are in heaven now? Juby went to heaven in a helicopter". The heartbreaking words were told to the Daily Mail by his aunt Macalia Del Brocco after Ricardo Jnr was airlifted to the hospital. Macalia said: "So that's his understanding of it, which is bittersweet, because that was what he saw. "And it's beautiful that he thinks that's what happened, but very sadly tragic at the same time."

Royal Mint's reveals 9 rarest £2 coins in circulation in UK
The Royal Mint's list of the rarest £2 coins in the UK include a number of commemorative Commonwealth Games coins from 2002, and a special commemorative First World War coin. While experts have urged everyone to check their change for another First World War inspired coin, which could be worth more than £500. Originally released in 2014 by the Royal Mint, the coin commemorates 100 years since the start of the First World War. The coin shows the face of Lord Kitchener who featured on the 'Your Country Needs You' posters. While a normal version of the coin will be worth no more than its face value of £2, a batch of the coins featured a rare error that boost their value for collectors. On some of the coins the words 'Two Pounds' are missing on the head side of the coin. According to experts at Coin Hunter, 5,720,000 of these coins are still in circulation but it appears to be 'very rare' to find one without a date. It isn't clear exactly how many of coins with an error remain in circulation but the first of its kind sold in March 2020 for £500. Recommended Reading: Coin Hunter experts said on Facebook: "Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener. "If the heads side does not show 'TWO POUNDS' - you have an error that appears to be very rare." Royal Mint rarest £2 coins These are the 9 rarest £2 coins according to the Royal Mint, and their mintage. A Royal Mint spokesman said: 'It's been 27 years since the first UK £2 coins were struck for circulation, sparking a year of celebrations, but the coin's history actually stretches back to 1986 when the first commemorative UK £2 coin was struck for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. 'This was the first time a sporting event had been commemorated on UK coinage. 'Although these coins have the same diameter as the post-1997 circulating £2 coin, they are single-coloured nickel brass and much heavier.'

LIZ JONES: In which I'm so lonely, I text the German
I'm a bad feminist. I am very ashamed. What can I say? I'm weak. I have just had an oak parquet floor laid in my sitting and dining rooms, and I wanted to share how it looks. I am sick of being alone. I texted the German. 'Was thinking about you today. I hope you are OK and happy. I wanted you to know I don't blame you for anything. I imagine life has been hard for you and you've never met a strong, powerful woman who wanted to look after you. I imagine you have been used. I could be wrong. Anyway, the weekend you came to stay at my house is held warmly in my memory. I really did love you. Liz x.'
