Nearly 40 nabbed as illegal timber racket cut short in Kelantan
South-East Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the simultaneous raids were conducted at 1.30pm on Monday across four districts – Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah and Jeli – under Ops Khazanah.
'Eight officers and 65 personnel from the South-East Brigade Intelligence Branch, 7th, 8th and 9th Battalions, as well as the Strike Force and the Kelantan Forestry Department, were involved in the operation.
'A total of 39 individuals, including undocumented Myanmar workers, were detained, while 5,537 various types of forest timber, 25 units of heavy machinery, 93 wood-cutting tools and several processing machines were confiscated,' he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
Nik Ros Azhan said the forest timber accounted for the largest portion of the seizures, valued at around RM14.98mil, followed by wood-processing equipment worth RM11.75mil.
He said the offences uncovered included operating without valid licences under the National Forestry Act 1984, the Wood-Based Industries Enactment 1985 and violations under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
'All individuals detained and the seized goods have been handed over to the Kelantan Forestry Department and police for further action.
'Checks by the local authorities also revealed that several factories had valid rental documents, while those without licences will be subjected to legal proceedings,' Nik Ros Azhan said.

Jeju Air crash families denounce report blaming pilot error
The final investigation report on the Jeju Air flight crash is planned to be released in June next year. (EPA Images pic) SEOUL : The families of victims of South Korea's deadliest plane crash on home soil have denounced a government report which blamed the disaster on pilot error, a representative told AFP Tuesday. The Boeing 737-800 was flying from Thailand to South Korea's southwest on Dec 29 last year but ended up belly-landing at Muan airport and exploding in a fireball after slamming into a concrete barrier, killing 179 people. South Korea's land ministry told AFP it had planned to release the partial findings of the investigation into the crash at the weekend but called off a briefing and withheld the report after the families objected, claiming it could be misleading. The report said a bird strike damaged the plane's right engine, but the pilot then mistakenly shut down the left engine instead, a representative for the families, who saw the report, told AFP. The error resulted in a total power loss and a failure of the landing gear system, they said. The pilot said, 'Let's shut down engine number 2 (the right engine),' but the flight data recorder showed that actually it was the left engine that was shut down, according to the report. 'No one has directly seen or heard the cockpit voice recorder or the flight data recorder,' Kim Youn-mi, a representative of the victims' families, told AFP. 'We weren't given any proper explanation about those things. We need to hear that to know. We have the right,' she added. The Jeju Air pilots' union also criticised the report, saying it was 'strongly angered' by the findings and would 'firmly reject the malicious attempt to shift blame onto the pilot'. The findings were part of an ongoing probe by South Korean and US investigators, who are still investigating the cause of the disaster. A bird strike – feathers and bloodstains were found in both engines – a faulty landing gear and the runway barrier are among the possible issues. The final report is planned to be released in June next year.

GOF busts RM190m e-waste syndicate in Johor raid
SEGAMAT: The General Operations Force (GOF) has dismantled a large-scale electronic waste (e-waste) processing syndicate following a raid in Buloh Kasap, Johor, with seizures valued at RM190 million. The operation, conducted jointly with multiple agencies, marks a significant crackdown on illegal e-waste activities in the region. The 5th Battalion of GOF, led by commanding officer Supt Salehin Sulaiman, carried out the raid on June 16 in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE), Immigration Department, and Segamat Municipal Council. Authorities discovered that the syndicate had been operating for nearly a year before being uncovered. Dubbed 'Op Hazard 2.0', the operation led to the arrest of 56 individuals, including two Malaysians—a lorry driver and a female clerk working at the premises. The seized items comprised 5,920 tonnes of e-waste, 9.45 tonnes of plastic, 1,031 tonnes of metal, 23 forklifts, 42 machines, and a trailer lorry. The total estimated value of confiscated materials reached RM190,715,900. 'This operation has successfully disrupted a major syndicate network involved in illegal scrap and e-waste processing, particularly in Segamat,' Salehin stated. In a separate operation, the same GOF battalion detained 25 illegal immigrants during a raid at an oil palm plantation in Ladang Tumbuk, Selangor, on April 14. The group, consisting of 16 men and nine women, allegedly entered Malaysia via an unregulated sea route and lacked valid identification documents. All detainees were handed over to Kuala Langat District Police for further action under the Immigration Act. – Bernama
