Mumbai: After a three-month pause, the Indian equity capital primary market is showing signs of revival. Seven companies are launching initial public offerings (IPOs) in May, and another 10-12 plan to enter the market in June. On Wednesday, Schloss Bangalore, operator of The Leela luxury hotels, announced the start date of its ₹3,500-crore IPO. Aegis Vopak Terminals, which owns and operates storage facilities for liquefied petroleum gas and other liquid commodities, also unveiled the schedule for its ₹2,800-crore share sale. Both open for public subscription on May 26 and close on May 28. Belrise Industries and Borana Weaves have already launched IPOs.Prostarm Info Systems will kick off its offering on May 27. Two more companies-ArisInfra Solutions and Scoda Tubes-are expected to announce their public offering schedule this week.According to bankers, several firms that had postponed their IPO plans are now gearing up for roadshows, buoyed by a stabilising secondary market, easing geopolitical tensions, and the successful execution of several large block deals in the last two weeks.Activity in the primary market, they added, is now back to the levels seen during September-October last year, but most have reduced valuations."The recent stabilisation in geopolitical issues and easing trade uncertainties have reinforced international investor confidence, enabling a robust recovery in IPO activity," said Ranvir Davda, co-head of investment banking at HSBC India. "With strong domestic liquidity, improving macroeconomic indicators, and a renewed appetite from dual pockets-local and international institutional investors-India's equity capital market deal momentum across IPOs and follow-ons remains well-positioned for sustained growth."According to bankers, several others, including Continuum Green Energy, IndiQube, CIEL HR, Paramesu Biotech, Solarworld, Brigade Hotel Ventures, All Time Plastics, Regreen Excel, Smartworks and NSDL are also gearing up to hit the market as early as June."The IPO revival isn't occurring in isolation as India's benchmark indices have outperformed most global peers in 2025, driven by strong domestic flows, improving macro indicators and a resilient services sector," said Neha Agarwal, managing director and head, equity capital markets, at JM Financial Institutional Securities. "Also, IPOs are no longer being driven by speculative euphoria. The market is rewarding real businesses with strong fundamentals, steady earnings and realistic valuations."The likes of Tata Capital, LG Electronics India, HDB Financials, ICICI Prudential AMC, Lenskart, Manipal Hospital and PhonePe, among others, are planning $1 billion-plus public offerings this fiscal year.About 60 companies have received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), while another 75 have filed draft papers. The revival of the primary market was preceded by a series of large secondary block deals executed in the first half of May. On May 16, Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) sold shares worth ₹13,180 crore in Bharti Airtel via a block trade.Earlier this month, US private equity firm Carlyle Group exited its 10.44% in PNB Housing Finance, raising ₹2,700 crore. Ant Financial, the fintech arm of Alibaba Group, sold a 4% stake in One97 Communications , raising ₹2,100 crore.

Rupee falls 20 paise to 86.36 against U.S. dollar in early trade

The rupee depreciated 20 paise to 86.36 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Monday (July 21, 2025), weighed down by the overall strength of the American currency in the overseas market and a negative trend in domestic equities. Forex traders said the rupee extended its slide with the breach of the key 86.00 level accelerating the decline as a recovering dollar index sapped rupee sentiment. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 86.27 against the greenback. In initial trade, it witnessed a low of 86.36, registering a fall of 20 paise over its previous close. On Friday (July 18, 2025), the rupee settled 4 paise lower at 86.16 against the U.S. dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.02% to 98.46. "As the dollar recovered, the Indian rupee has been showing downside syndromes and is expected to move between 85.90 to 86.40 with a downward bias for the rupee," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, went up by 0.12% to $69.36 per barrel in futures trade. Forex traders said all eyes are now on the outcome of India-U.S. trade talks, especially as the August 1 deadline for potential tariffs on Indian exports draws near. If the discussions fail or get delayed, Indian exporters could face fresh pressure — adding to the rupee's challenges. However, if a deal is reached, it could offer a much-needed breather. Until then, the uncertainty is likely to keep market participants cautious, CR Forex Advisors MD — Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that for now, the trend continues to favour a weaker rupee. "The pair may find support around 85.70-85.80, but having crossed 86.00, the door is open for a possible move toward 86.50-86.80," he added. Meanwhile, in the domestic equity market, Sensex declined 155.73 points or 0.19% to 81,602.00, while Nifty fell 63.55 points or 0.25% to 24,904.85. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth ₹374.74 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data.

Aug 1 is hard tariff deadline, but US open to talks: Commerce Secy Lutnick

United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed on Sunday that August 1 is the 'hard deadline' for countries to begin paying new tariffs to the United States. The announcement comes as several nations, including India, race to finalise trade agreements before the new levies take effect. 'That's a hard deadline,' Lutnick said in an interview on CBS News. 'So on August 1, the new tariff rates will come in. Nothing stops countries from talking to us after August 1, but they're going to start paying the tariffs.' Trump tariff delays and trade talks US President Donald Trump first announced new tariffs on April 2, saying the goal was to protect American industries and push for fairer trade. The tariffs were delayed twice to allow for negotiations, but US officials now say there will be no further extensions. Smaller nations, such as those in Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa, will face a baseline tariff of 10 per cent. Larger economies, like those in the European Union, could be hit with much higher rates, some as high as 40 per cent, according to letters sent out by the White House earlier this month. Lutnick said the US prefers open trade, but countries that don't lower their trade barriers 'will pay a fair tariff to America'. India races to reach trade deal with US India and the United States just wrapped up the fifth round of trade talks on July 17 in Washington. The four-day discussions are part of ongoing efforts to create a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The two countries are also working on reaching at least an interim deal before the August 1 tariff deadline. India's lead negotiator, Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal from the Commerce Department, led the Indian delegation. Key issues in the talks included agriculture, automobiles, and trade protections. India is pushing for the removal of a 26 per cent tariff on its exports to the US, as well as relief from other US duties on steel (50 per cent), aluminium, and automobiles (25 per cent). Meanwhile, the US seeks lower tariffs on American goods, including industrial products, electric vehicles, wines, apples, nuts, dairy items, and genetically modified crops. Agriculture is a sticking point One of the main hurdles in the talks is agriculture. India has so far refused to give duty concessions on dairy and farm products, citing concerns from domestic farmers. Several Indian farmers' associations have urged the government not to include these items in any trade deal. Despite this, an Indian official said that both sides are open to packaging whatever progress is made as an interim deal, while continuing to work on a full agreement later this year, as earlier reported by Business Standard. Indian exports to US rises in Q1 Amid this, trade between the US and India is on the rise. In the first quarter of this financial year (April–June), India's exports to the US rose by 22.8 per cent to $25.51 billion, while imports from the US increased by 11.7 per cent to $12.86 billion as companies rush to ship goods before the tariffs take effect.
