PM Modi addresses Trinidad and Tobago Parliament on democracy, terrorism, role of women, cricket, more
During his address, PM Modi spoke about democracy, India's growth, bilateral ties, the importance of women's empowerment, and the deep ties with the Indian diaspora.
PM Modi emphasised that democracy for Indians is a way of life rooted in a rich heritage. He noted the ancestral ties of many parliamentarians to Bihar, known for its ancient republics.
'For us, Indians, democracy is not just a political model but a way of life. We have a rich heritage spanning thousands of years. Many of the parliamentarians here have their ancestors from Bihar, which was a home to Mahajanpads - ancient republics,' PM Modi noted.
Emphasising India's growth and priorities, PM Modi was quoted by ANI saying, "India is the fastest growing major economy in the world.. We see our development also as our responsibility towards others, and our priority will always be the Global South..."
PM Modi reiterated the need to stand against terrorism. 'We must stand united to deny terrorism any shelter or space.'
His statement comes months after the deadly Pahlagam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives.
In a speech to Trinidad and Tobago's parliament, PM Modi emphasises the importance of women and underscores their significant contributions to India's development in diverse fields, reinforcing the cultural respect for women in India.
PM Modi said, 'I'm delighted to see so many women members in this house. Respect for women is deeply rooted in Indian culture. One of our important holy texts, the Skanda Purana, says that one daughter brings as much happiness as ten sons.'
He further added, 'We are strengthening the hands of women to build our modern India. From space to sports, startups to science, education to enterprise, aviation to armed forces - they are leading India to a new future in various domains.'
PM Modi expresses that Indians are passionate fans of the West Indies cricket team, supporting them wholeheartedly except during matches against India.
'I must say, Indians are among the most passionate fans of the West Indies cricket team. We cheer for them with all our heart, except when they are playing against India,' PM Modi said.
Addressing the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago's parliament, PM Modi said, "180 years ago, the first Indians arrived on this land after a long and hard journey, oceans away. The Indian beats blended beautifully with the Caribbean rhythm... From politics to poetry, cricket to commerce—they contribute to every field..."

Brics Summit: PM Modi calls for global institutional reforms, says Global South faces ‘double standards'
The Global South has often been a victim of 'double standards' and nations that make major contributions to the world economy are deprived of a seat at the decisionmaking table, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday as he pressed for urgent reforms of the key bodies, including the UN Security Council. read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for urgent reforms in global institutions, criticising the 'double standards' faced by the Global South and highlighting its continued marginalisation in international decision-making processes. Addressing the Brics Summit, Modi said that countries making significant contributions to the world economy are still denied a rightful place at the global high table. 'Two-thirds of humanity has not received adequate representation in the global institutions formed in the 20th century,' he said. He emphasised that to tackle 21st-century challenges, institutions must evolve to reflect contemporary realities. The prime minister's comments come amid growing calls from emerging economies for a more inclusive global order that gives greater voice and representation to developing nations. The annual Brics Summit began with a group photo of the leaders of the bloc's member nations followed by an address by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. 'The Global South has often been a victim of double standards. Whether it is about development, distribution of resources, or security-related issues,' Modi said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In his remarks at the first plenary session, the prime minister rued the Global South has often received nothing but token gestures on issues like climate finance, sustainable development and technology access. 'Countries that have a major contribution to today's global economy have not been given a seat at the decision-making table,' he said. 'This is not just a question of representation, but also of credibility and effectiveness,' he added. Modi said the world today needs a new multipolar and inclusive order and this has to begin with comprehensive reforms in global institutions. 'Reforms should not be merely symbolic, but their real impact should also be visible. There should be changes in governance structures, voting rights and leadership positions,' he said. The prime minister argued that the challenges of the countries of the Global South should be given priority in policy-making. The expansion of Brics is proof of the fact that it is an organisation that has the capacity to change itself according to the times, he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Now we will have to show the same willpower for reforms in institutions like the UN Security Council, WTO and multilateral development banks.' 'In the age of artificial intelligence, where technology is updated every week, it is not acceptable for a global institution to not be updated even once in 80 years,' he said. Modi said '21st century software cannot be run by 20th century type-writers'. 'India has always considered it its duty to rise above its own interests and work in the interest of humanity,' he said. 'We are fully committed to make constructive contributions on all subjects, along with the Brics countries,' Modi added. With inputs from agencies
