Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 faces major durability test, surprising results inside

India Today5 days ago
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has just been put through its paces in a fresh durability test by popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything, and the results might surprise those who still question the toughness of foldable phones. For those who don't know, Zack Nelson (the man behind the channel) is best known for torturing smartphones on his YouTube channel with several tests, including bending, scratching, and burning, to name a few. As is tradition, he took Samsung's latest and greatest foldable for a spin with his usual tools and techniques, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 did not disappoint. advertisementFirst, let's get into the durability side of things. The scratch test started on the cover screen and back panel of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, both of which are protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2. Like most modern smartphones, scratches began to appear at level 6 of the Mohs hardness scale, with deeper grooves at level 7. The main inner display, though more delicate, held up well too. The aluminium frame didn't fare as well under sharp tools, but that's not something everyday users need to worry about. One notable improvement on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the camera ring design. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, or even the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Samsung has reverted to a more robust metal setup. Zack tried to dig into the camera rings with his blade, but to no avail — the camera rings stayed in place, showing impressive strength.
While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn't offer a traditional IP68 rating like regular bar phones — where the '6' stands for complete dust protection — the phone still has an IP48 rating. This means the '4' denotes that the phone can handle dust or solid objects 1mm or larger in size. That said, Zack went all in by sprinkling fine dust over the hinge and inner screen and opened and closed the phone multiple times. To everyone's surprise, the phone's hinge continued to function smoothly, without any visible damage. All said, the flame test — where a lighter is held to the screen — left lasting marks on both displays, as expected. The cover screen showed damage after about 15 seconds, and the inner display lasted roughly 10 seconds. Neither recovered, but that's the typical nature of OLED displays under direct flame.

Then came the all-important bend test. With pressure applied from both directions — folded and unfolded — the Galaxy Z Fold 7 managed to survive without breaking, bending or snapping. Considering this is the thinnest foldable phone yet, that's impressive. And speaking of thinness, a recent study conducted by the Korean Consumer-Centred Enterprise Association found that Samsung's official thickness claim of 8.9mm is actually slightly overstated — the real number is 8.82mm. In contrast, competitors like Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi have been caught stating lower thicknesses than what their phones actually measure.advertisementHonor, for instance, advertises its Magic V5 as the world's thinnest foldable at 8.8mm, but real-world measurements show it to be over 0.5mm thicker. Vivo and Xiaomi have similar gaps between their claims and reality. On the other hand, Samsung seems to have gone the other way — not just matching its specs, but doing better. Now, this could point to a more conservative approach, or perhaps it's simply a genuine effort to avoid the marketing exaggeration we often see in this category. We think the latter. For what it's worth, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has passed JerryRigEverything's brutal durability test with flying colours — and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.- Ends

Sonodyne Sama 5000 review: Amp up your living room's audio profile

With TVs becoming better at audio every passing year, one wonders if soundbars really make sense anymore. But try watching a movie on Amazon Prime on an Android TV, and you will realise no TV is good enough for you to hear the dialogues clearly. But soundbars are not just about hearing better; they are about the better experience of watching movies and listening to music. The Sonodyne Sama 5000 promises a superior experience on both these fronts, given its experience with hi-fi audio. The Sonodyne Sama 5000 is a soundbar that goes under your TV, which connects to its compact subwoofer without wires. While the soundbar has controls on top, you can use the remote to take charge of the device. The subwoofer and soundbar link up automatically as soon as you power up both devices, and this is a big plus. The remote is simple and convenient to use. I like how there are just three sound modes—music, movie, and voice. Depending on what you are watching, you can easily change this, and trust me, this feature is very useful when you browse videos on YouTube. Another feature I like is the ability to adjust the subwoofer volume separately using the select button—this is important for those who are touchy about their bass levels. You can cycle between audio sources, too, if you are streaming via Bluetooth from your phone or using a USB drive where you store your songs. There is also the Dolby Atmos button, which brings in an immersive audio experience in one touch. It takes a second to figure out that your living room audio is suddenly on steroids. Even the BBC newsreader's voice fills the room, and you know you cannot even think of playing Indian news TV with these powered on. The subwoofer makes a huge difference here. And you can feel it at work as soon as you switch to a movie, so much so that on late nights I had to keep the soundbar off to ensure we didn't become the topic of discussion in the society WhatsApp group. Watching Chief of War on Apple TV, I realised the soundtrack had traversed into the realm of the physical… I could feel the room vibrate with the power of the audio objects scattered all around. As Jason Momoa dives into the Pacific Ocean, the depth of the water around him starts exerting its pressure on my ears. This is truly an immersive experience in your living room. Switching to Bluetooth mode, with music streaming from the phone, this immersive experience finds new layers. With FLAC files, the audio quality is much sharper than it is on the OTT apps. You feel each strum of the guitar, each twang on the mandolin, each beat of the drum… the soundbar projecting music across the room. A number like Amrit Ramnath and Guru Nanak's Sumiran sounds different when the speakers complement the recording in every possible way. Everything has so much depth and clarity, with space for each channel. I have not experienced this song with so much soul before. It is almost as if there is a cloud of music hovering around where my TV is placed. I could not spot any major negatives with the Sonodyne Sama 5000, other than the fact that you need to be careful about the audio level if staying in an apartment complex like I do. One thing to keep in mind is that the soundbar is a bit taller than some of the latest models I have seen from other brands. So if you plan to keep it in front of the TV, then it could block the TV remote. The Sonodyne Sama 5000 is a complete entertainment hub in the true sense. It can take your TV watching experience to a whole new level while also becoming the primary music destination for everyone at home. Priced at Rs 45,000, this is a great option for those looking to amp up the audio capabilities of their living room. Nandagopal Rajan writes on technology, gadgets and everything related. Smartphone Revenues Surpass Record Rs 8.7 Lakh Crore In April-June Globally

New Delhi: The smartphone revenues worldwide grew 10 per cent (year-on-year) in the April-June quarter (Q2 2025) to exceed $100 billion (more than Rs 8.7 lakh crore) -- the highest level in a second calendar quarter to date, according to a new report. In contrast, global shipments saw a meagre 3 per cent (on-year) rise during the quarter, according to Counterpoint Research's latest Market Monitor service. Meanwhile, the global average selling price (ASP) also hit a second-quarter peak, rising 7 per cent YoY in Q2 to approach $350. The market witnessed both volume and value growth despite ongoing macroeconomic headwinds in several key regions. Amid the easing out of US tariffs, OEMs benefitted from robust demand for premium devices, especially in developed markets, said senior analyst Shilpi Jain. Premiumisation has accelerated beyond earlier projections, propelled by expanded access to financing options, enhanced trade-in initiatives, and heightened promotional activities – all of which are effectively lowering the barrier to entry for higher-end devices. According to Research Director Jeff Fieldhack, Apple strengthened its lead in revenues driven by strong performance of the 16 series across geographies, benefitting from the broader premiumisation trend. 'Shipments in the US were front-loaded in the quarter due to tariff uncertainties. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e drove sales in Japan, making it one of the fastest growing regions for Apple. Emerging markets like Middle East Africa, and India continue to show strong growth,' he mentioned. Samsung retained its leadership position in terms of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2025, while its revenue grew 4 per cent YoY. The brand's growth was largely driven by strong demand for its refreshed mid-tier A-series devices across regions, while the Galaxy S25 series, along with the newly added S25 Edge, drove volumes in the premium segment. 'Looking ahead, we expect the premiumisation trend to continue, with revenue growth outpacing volume growth in 2025. Additionally, growing interest in GenAI smartphones and foldable form factors will likely offer significant growth opportunities for the smartphone market,' the report mentioned.
