Libya's Interior Ministry Reports Armed Attack on Security Forces in Tripoli
On Saturday, the Ministry of Interior under Libya's outgoing Government of National Unity confirmed that security forces were targeted in an armed assault in the Jannat Al-Areef area of Tripoli.
According to an official statement, the ministry said that the attack was carried out by a group described as 'infiltrators,' who also used fireworks to incite chaos and damage public property.
The ministry condemned the incident, labeling it a criminal act aimed at undermining public order and destabilizing the capital during a period of heightened political tension.
It stated that all necessary efforts will be made to apprehend those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted under the law.
Authorities reported that no civilians were harmed during the attack, but the ministry stressed the seriousness of the offense, given that it targeted state personnel and attempted to provoke disorder in a public area.
In the same statement, the Interior Ministry reaffirmed its full commitment to protecting the right to peaceful protest. Officials emphasized that demonstrations remain a legitimate right guaranteed by Libyan law, provided they are carried out in accordance with legal procedures and in a manner that respects public safety and order.
The ministry also announced the launch of an active investigation and confirmed that it is pursuing the individuals involved in the incident, describing the response as firm and comprehensive.
This latest development comes amid a series of public demonstrations in Tripoli and other cities, where protesters have voiced growing frustration over deteriorating services, political deadlock, and ongoing security concerns. While most protests have remained peaceful, recent weeks have seen a rise in isolated incidents of violence and unrest.
