Michelin targets more than 20% of sales from non-tyre businesses by 2030

TimesLIVE26-05-2025
Michelin is on track to generate 20% of its revenue outside the tyre business by 2030, an executive said on Friday, as the company diversifies away from a core business pummelled by major shifts in the global car industry.
The French firm is one of the world's top tyre producers but is facing severe competition from Chinese rivals with lower production costs, and a shrinking client base in Europe.
It generates about 15% to 16% of revenues from non-core activities including services and composite materials and is aiming to grow this through organic growth and acquisitions, Maude Portigliatti, director of the group's Business Polymer Composite Solutions unit, said in a press briefing.
As part of the growth, Portigliatti also announced a €60m (R1,219,731,600) investment in a factory near Lyon to produce 5-HMF, a biobased molecule that can replace the use of fossil fuel-derived formaldehyde in resins and glues and other wide-ranging uses.
The plant, with an annual capacity of 3,000 tons, will start in 2026 and is expected to become the largest production site for 5-HMF in the world.
Analysts at Jefferies upgraded Michelin on Friday to a "buy" rating, pointing to its better earnings growth relative to peers and lower exposure to autos, which they said carry risks in 2025.

Rio Tinto posts smallest first-half profit in five years

Rio Tinto reported its smallest first-half underlying profit in five years on Wednesday as iron ore prices remained subdued due to oversupply concerns and soft China demand, offsetting higher earnings from its copper business. Iron ore prices eased in the first half of the year as steel production in top consumer China declined and more supply from Australia, Brazil and South Africa came to the global market, denting Rio Tinto's earnings from the steelmaking raw material. Expectations that China will curb overcapacity in the steel sector and restocking before the end of the year could underpin a pickup in prices to $100 (R1,787) per metric ton towards the year-end, according to a note by Morgan Stanley. Rio Tinto, the world's largest iron ore producer, reported underlying earnings of $4.8bn (R85.7bn) for the six months ended June 30, missing a Visible Alpha consensus of $5bn (R89.3bn). This was the company's weakest first-half performance since 2020. Last year it reported underlying earnings of $5.7bn (R101.8bn). Rio Tinto, which is increasingly shifting its focus to copper, declared an interim dividend of $1.48 (R26.4) per share for the first half of the year, lower than the $1.77 (R31.63) apiece it gave out last year.

Lamborghini's half-year operating profit dips amid currency headwinds

Italian luxury sports car maker Lamborghini said on Wednesday its operating income fell slightly in the first half even as it delivered record numbers of cars to customers as currency effects weighed on its bottom line. Operating income stood at €431m (R8,904,511,720) from January to June versus €458m (R9,462,934,940) a year before, primarily due to unfavourable exchange rate trends in the second quarter, the company said. "The results are solid despite global economic and political instability," CEO Stephan Winkelmann said. Net revenues amounted to €1.62bn (R33,471,516,600) in the time as the carmaker, part of Germany's Volkswagen, delivered 5,681 cars, its highest amount ever for a first half. Its operating profit margin fell to 26.6% from 28.3% a year before. Winkelmann said the results confirmed a decision to make all Lamborghini's range hybrid was right, as shown by the success of the Revuelto sportscar, its first plug-in hybrid, launched in 2023, and of the Urus SE SUV. "Our vision is shared by our customers," he said. "We look forward to the market launch of the Temerario, which will complete the first fully hybrid range in the segment". Lamborghini, based near Bologna in northern Italy, did not make any reference to Sunday's EU-US framework trade deal, which imposed a 15% US import tariff on most EU goods, despite the Americas region accounting for around 30% of its deliveries in the first half, or 1,732 cars. The Europe, Middle East and Africa region led deliveries in that time with 2,708 units, while Asia Pacific accounted for 1,241 units. Earlier this year Winkelmann said US tariffs would have an impact on Lamborghini's revenue even though luxury product makers can pass on potential tariffs to customers as there was a "sweet point" beyond which "you lose volumes".

BRICS' criticism brings Trump 10% tariff threat

RIO DE JANEIRO - US President Donald Trump threatened China, India, and some of the world's fastest-emerging economies with higher import tariffs, hitting back at BRICS' criticism of his trade policies as the bloc meets Monday. The 11-nation grouping - which also includes US allies Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia - is concluding a two-day summit in Rio de Janeiro. On Sunday, BRICS leaders described Trump's stop-start tariff wars as "indiscriminate", damaging, and illegal, drawing a quick rebuke from the pugilistic US president. "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump wrote on social media. BRICS members account for about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output. Conceived two decades ago as a forum for fast-growing economies, the BRICS have come to be seen as a Chinese-driven counterbalance to US influence. But it is an expanding and often divergent grouping - bringing together arch US foes like Iran and Russia, with some of Washington's closest allies in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Some US allies inside the bloc had tried to blunt criticism by not mentioning Trump by name in their summit statement. Saudi Arabia - one of the world's biggest purchasers of US high-tech weapons - even kept its foreign minister away from Sunday's talks and a BRICS "family photo" of leaders, seemingly to avoid Washington's ire. But such diplomatic gestures were lost on the US president. In April, Trump threatened a slew of punitive duties, before backing off in the face of a fierce market sell-off. Now he is threatening to impose unilateral levies on trading partners unless they reach "deals" by August 1, with BRICS nations seemingly getting higher tariffs than planned. It cannot have helped that BRICS leaders also condemned the recent US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities - a show of solidarity with fellow member Iran. Beijing on Monday insisted BRICS was not seeking confrontation with the United States. "China has repeatedly stated its position that trade and tariff wars have no winners and protectionism offers no way forward," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said. Beijing also defended the bloc as "an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries". "It advocates openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation," Mao said. "It does not engage in camp confrontation and is not targeted at any country," she said. The political punch of this year's summit has been depleted by the absence of China's Xi Jinping, who skipped the meeting for the first time in his 12 years as president. The Chinese leader is not the only notable absentee. Russian President Vladimir Putin, charged with war crimes in Ukraine, also opted to stay away, participating via video link. He told counterparts that BRICS had become a key player in global governance.
