Auburn, Florida lead stacked SEC men's basketball tournament
The SEC men's basketball tournament is setting up to be an exciting one with a potential for a major impact on the March Madness field.
Sports Seriously
Delaware men's basketball looks to cap off a historic run with its fifth win in five days in the CAA tournament championship on Tuesday night.
The Blue Hens (16-19) are the first double-digit seed to ever reach the conference final of the CAA tournament, as Delaware has won four games in four days, including an upset of No. 1 seed Towson in the semifinals Monday. They're looking to secure an NCAA Tournament bid with a losing record.
Awaiting Delaware is UNC-Wilmington (26-7), the No. 2 seed of the CAA tournament.
REQUIRED READING: Expert predictions for every major college hoops conference tournament
The first team to ever win four games in a single CAA tournament, Delaware is hot at the right time. The Blue Hens have scored 80, 79, 100 and 82 in wins against Stony Brook, Campbell, William & Mary and Towson. Delaware shot 62.1% from 3-point range against William & Mary, breaking a program record with 18 3-pointers. It shot 55.1% from the field and 45% from 3-point range on Monday night.
Perhaps the wildest part of Delaware's run is its streak prior to the conference championship.
Here's a look at the Blue Hens' record, including how they fared prior to getting hot with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line:
Delaware basketball record
Delaware didn't have the resume of most teams looking to play its way into the NCAA Tournament.
In fact, the Blue Hens ended the regular season with a 1-11 record heading into the CAA tournament and only a 5-13 conference record. Delaware finished third-to-last in the final CAA standings, but that didn't stop it from this historic run.
The Blue Hens have CAA tournament experience, winning the conference championship in 2022 and earning a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Villanova in the first round. That year, coach Martin Ingelsby and Delaware made a run in the CAA tournament as a No. 6 seed, also defeating UNC-Wilmington in the championship game.
Can the Blue Hens do it again? Only two teams have won five games in five days to reach the NCAA Tournament before, according to The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman: UConn (2011) and NC State (2024) won the national championship and went to the Final Four, respectively. Those are quite the expectations if Delaware can win Tuesday.
Here's a look at Delaware's record heading into the CAA Tournament:

Worst records to make NCAA Tournament
Delaware would be among the teams with the worst records to ever make the NCAA Tournament should it win on Tuesday night and finish the season 17-19 with five consecutive wins heading into the Big Dance.
Should the Blue Hens defeat UNC-Wilmington they'd have a 47.2% winning percentage on the year, which would rank as the 16th-worst winning percentage to reach the NCAA Tournament, according to the NCAA.
However, only one No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament (Penn in 1985) was listed by the NCAA, as the rest of the teams earned No. 16 seeds in March Madness.
Penn finished 15-15 that season. If Delaware avoids being a No. 16 seed in the tournament, the Blue Hens will become the first non-No. 16 seed to ever finish the regular season with a losing record. Navy (15-18) also has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament with a losing record this season, as it takes on American in the Patriot League final on Wednesday.

Westfield native, Purdue transfer safety 'sets the tone' with new Oregon football teammates

LAS VEGAS — Before former Purdue football safety Dillon Thieneman became a Duck, Oregon's coaching staff labeled him a snake. That's the designation Dan Lanning and company put on their upcoming opponents' best players. They assigned Thieneman to that portion of the animal kingdom prior to last season's Oct. 18 game at Ross-Ade Stadium. Thieneman's five tackles did not stand out in the 35-0 Oregon victory. By a more analytical measure, Thieneman's only PFF grades lower than that night's 51.2 came in the blowout losses to Notre Dame and Indiana. Lanning, though, was eager to add the Westfield grad. He fit a need on a perennially playoff-caliber roster. He also checked off the same intangibles which made him a leader at Purdue. "When you really get to know Dillon, that's when you fall in love with Dillon," Lanning said Wednesday at Big Ten media days. "What kind of worker he is, what he does. Those are the things that tape don't tell, but you can figure it out quickly through the relationship — hop on the phone, having the guy to visit, being around his family." Lanning said his staff maintains a "heightened awareness" of players performing well across college football. That awareness increases when those players enter their name in the NCAA transfer portal. He likened it to the NFL free agency dynamic. Thieneman's performance and credentials over his first two seasons made him one of the highest-profile defensive players available. Regardless, once he committed, he still needed to prove himself all over again to a new group of teammates. Relive Purdue basketball's Final Four run with our commemorative book. As the Ducks tell it, he accomplished that by simply picking up where he left off as the hardest worker on the Boilermaker roster. "That dude sets the tone, whether it be off the field, or getting extra treatment, extra reps in," Oregon linebacker Bryce Boettcher said. "It's an all-the-time mindset. And he is one of the guys that comes downhill, flies to the ball and plays with a lot of effort. That's what you want from any guy on your defense, especially safety — a dude that can cover from the rook and set the tone on someone early." Tight end Kenyon Sadiq said Thieneman's technique and football knowledge showed up during spring practices. He only got around to those attributes, though, after mentioning Thieneman's work ethic and diligence to be the first to arrive and the last to leave. "It's rare you see something like that — especially from a person of his caliber, if that makes sense," Sadiq said. "He's very level-headed and a very nice person." Those descriptions of Thieneman's demeanor and commitment align with the reputation he built over two Purdue seasons. Thieneman represented more than merely another home-grown talent pried away by one of the sport's elite. His freshman All-American season portended a building block for a bright future. He completed a family trilogy of Boilermaker safeties who arrived under the radar and graduated at the top of the depth chart. Now, the best thing Purdue can say about the end of Thieneman's career is — unlike tight end Max Klare at Ohio State or punter Keelan Crimmins at Illinois — they aren't scheduled to play against him. The Ducks, though, see him as a potential key piece in their pursuit of a repeat Big Ten Conference championship.

Former LSU baseball pitcher Jacob Mayers agrees to MLB contract following draft selection

Former LSU pitcher Jacob Mayers agreed to terms on a contract with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The right-hander will receive a bonus of $190,000 after his selection in the 2025 MLB Draft. The Red Sox chose him in the ninth round with the No. 268 overall pick. He was the second Tiger taken by the Red Sox after fellow right-handed pitcher Anything Eyanson, who went in the third round. Mayers came to LSU after two seasons as a starter at Nicholls, where he won multiple freshman pitcher of the year awards and All-Southland Conference honors. As a junior in Baton Rouge, he made 17 relief appearances and finished with a 4.80 ERA along with 26 strikeouts. He saw 2.2 innings through three games in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, but came in big in the Tigers' win vs. Arkansas. The six-foot-five, 220-pounder came to LSU as the No. 17 transfer portal prospect per Baseball America. He hails from Gonzales, LA, and played prep baseball at St. Amant High School.

NASCAR at Dover: Why this 3-time winner has most to prove. Is Katherine Legge racing?

It's almost hard to fathom that in the 56 years of auto racing at Dover Motor Speedway, there has been only one other race weekend held in July − the first one, on July 6, 1969. Yet that will happen again the weekend of July 18-20 when Dover hosts its annual race weekend, beginning July 18 with the General Tire 150 in the ARCA Series, followed July 19 with the BetRivers 200 as part of the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and culminating July 20 with the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400, a key race in the NASCAR Cup Series. Dover Motor Speedway officials are not treating this opportunity as an, ahem, day at the beach. For the fans who attend, that's a different story, literally. DOVER'S FUTURE: From glorious highs to an uncertain future, can NASCAR recapture glory at Dover? SIRIANNI AND SUPER BOWL: The 'r' word Eagles, Nick Sirianni won't use about the Super Bowl. They use this instead That's because "Miles Beach" will make its debut near the iconic "Miles the Monster" monument. Miles Beach will have more than 600 tons of sand and all the accoutrements to go along with a day at the beach. That includes a stage with reggae music, a tiki hut, mini-boardwalk, a 25-foot lighthouse, the world's largest Rubber Duck (60 feet tall and weighing 15.5 tons), sand sculptures, dunk tanks, and more. "We couldn't take the race to the beach, so let's see if we can bring the beach to our track," Dover Motor Speedway president and general manager Mike Tatoian said. "Now that we're in the summer, and the kids are out of school, obviously we're accentuating the beach, which is one of Delaware's most beautiful natural assets. "We're trying to create a beach atmosphere without actually going to Rehoboth or Lewes. We're having a lot of fun with that." It's quite a contrast to what Dover has been able to offer in the past. From 2022-24, the race was held the last weekend of April. In 2022 and 2023, the Sunday races were postponed because of rain. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dover hosted two races each year − one in the spring, usually in May or early June; the other in September. NASCAR race weekend in Dover: What to know, where to go, what you can bring Road closures for Delaware State Fair: When will traffic be the worst? It was hard for the speedway to appeal to the beach crowd, or to hold activities around the track that lasted much into the evening because the weather either hadn't warmed up yet, or had already started to cool off. But that's just one component of the race weekend. Here are the others: What's the schedule for racing at Dover Motor Speedway? July 18 at 5 p.m.: General Tire 150 ARCA Menards Series race (on FS1). July 19 at 4:30 p.m.: BetRivers 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series race (on The CW, Performance Racing Network). July 20 at 2 p.m.: Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 NASCAR Cup Series race (on TNT, Performance Racing Network). How to watch racing from Dover Motor Speedway on TV TNT will broadcast the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 beginning at 2 p.m., with radio coverage from PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. For TNT, Adam Alexander is the play-by-play announcer, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Steve Letarte serving as analysts. The pit reporters are Marty Snider, Danielle Trotta and Alan Cavanna. What's the weather forecast for the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400? The outlook for July 20 isn't great, with scattered thunderstorms expected in the morning, followed by mostly cloudy skies and potentially more thunderstorms in the afternoon. The National Weather Service is predicting a 70% chance of rain. The high temperature is expected to be 86 degrees and humid. Either way, the hot and humid summer weather will have an impact on the racing conditions on the concrete oval. "Being in July, the track is going to be hotter, slicker and theoretically should take more rubber," driver Ricky Stenhouse said. "If that happens, then I think the top side of the racetrack comes into play more. You should be able to pass a little better. But it'll also make the bottom of the racetrack very difficult because the rubber will build up, and then you start kind of sliding around on top of that rubber. "So it'll be tricky for sure." Who's winning the NASCAR In-Season Tournament Challenge? Dover's Cup Series event will be the fourth of five in NASCAR's first-ever In-Season Tournament Challenge, an in-season, bracket-style tournament in which the winning driver pockets $1 million. The tournament began June 28 at Atlanta Motor Speedway with 32 drivers seeded from No. 1 through No. 32, paired off against each other − No. 1 Denny Hamlin vs. No. 32 Ty Dillon, No. 2 Chase Briscoe vs. No. 31 Noah Gragson, and so on. The driver who performed better at a particular race advanced while the loser was eliminated. Dillon has advanced to the semifinals, held at Dover, where he'll take on No. 12 seed John Hunter Nemecheck. The other semifinal pits No. 23 seed Tyler Reddick against No. 6 Ty Gibbs. The winners advance to the finals July 27 in Indianapolis at the Brickyard 400. Who are the top drivers to watch? The In-Season Tournament Challenge between Gibbs and Reddick has perhaps the most on the line. Beyond the chance for the $1 million prize, Gibbs has to perform well in order to keep his playoff hopes alive. Sixteen drivers make the playoff field that is held over the final 10 races. There are five races left after Dover in the regular season. Individual race winners are granted a spot in the playoff field. Reddick is currently fourth in the standings, so he should be pretty safe for the playoffs. Gibbs, meanwhile, is 17th, just 10 points out of 16th. But he has not won a race this season. As for other drivers, Kyle Busch has the most victories at Dover. He's 15th in the standings and has not won a race. Other drivers to watch include Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott, who have each won twice at Dover. Elliott is currently second in the standings, while Hamlin is in fifth place. That leaves Shane van Gisbergen, who won on the road course at Sonoma, California, on July 13. It was his third victory of the season, all on road courses. He has not been nearly as successful on traditional tracks. That's why van Gisbergen is in 26th place in the standings. While van Gisbergen is in the playoffs based on his three victories, he needs a strong showing at Dover to prove that he will be a legitimate threat in the postseason races. Is Katherine Legge racing at Dover? Legge became the first woman to compete in a NASCAR Cup Series event since Danica Patrick in 2018 when she debuted at Phoenix back in March. Legge, who's 44 years old, has raced in four Indy 500s during a racing career that has spanned more than 20 years. In the Cup Series, Legge has only entered four races so far. She finished 19th on the road course in Chicago on July 6, the highest finish for a woman since Patrick in 2017. Legge is also racing in several Xfinity Series races this season. She will race in both the Xfinity and Cup series races July 26-27 at the Brickyard 400, but she will not be racing at Dover. Legge also competes in the ARCA series, but she will not be at Dover for the General Tire 150. Celebrate the Eagles' Super Bowl win with our new book Why is ESPN SportsCenter at Dover? ESPN will host its "SportsCenter: 50 States in 50 Days" at Dover Motor Speedway on July 20. It's the show's first time at the Monster Mile. ESPN's Marty Smith will begin coverage from the track at 10 a.m. that day with updates, features and so on throughout the day. Where and how to meet drivers Drivers Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson are scheduled to participate in interviews at the Monster Monument on July 20 beginning at 11 a.m. for Elliott and Larson, and 11:15 a.m. for Blaney and Josh Berry. In addition, other drivers are scheduled to appear around the racetrack on July 18 and July 19. Check for the full schedule. A race winner is automatically in the playoffs, regardless of finish in the standings.) Contact Martin Frank at mfrank@ Follow on X @Mfranknfl.
