CBI chargesheets French embassy official for arrange Schengen visas for Punjab applicants in return for money
The CBI is on the lookout for Shokeen, who is understood to have escaped from the country to evade the law.
The CBI found that Shokeen targeted applicants from Punjab seeking Schengen visas through a network of agents and induced them to give a huge amount of money for the travel documents.
'A network of visa agents, mostly based in Punjab received money ranging from ₹13 lakh to ₹45 lakh from each visa applicant and in return of these large sums of money, visa applications were processed by the accused and after issuance of Schengen visas, the accused destroyed the visa documents and files,' the CBI has alleged.
During its three-year investigation, the CBI coordinated with multiple agencies, including international organisations, to gather evidence in the case resulting in the charge sheet filed before a special CBI court here.
Shokeen amassed massive wealth in the form of cash and prime properties in Delhi and Punjab during his tenure in the French embassy between January 2021 and May 2022, the CBI alleged in the charge sheet filed before the additional chief judicial magistrate in the special CBI court.
'To trace the proceeds of crime abroad, the International Operations Division of CBI, in coordination with the International Police Cooperation Unit of CBI, were also successful in getting India's first Interpol Silver notice published in this case,' a CBI spokesperson said.
The agency found that visa agents Balwinder Singh Bartia and Pritpal Singh were the key co-conspirators who funnelled the money through various bank accounts, which ultimately reached Shokeen and his family members through two accused middlemen Jashandeep Singh Sidhu and Bhawan Shokeen, the charge sheet alleged.

Baghel challenges ED, CBI powers in SC, fears arrest & seeks anticipatory bail
Raipur: AICC general secretary and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the jurisdiction and powers of the CBI and ED , while also seeking anticipatory bail in cases under investigation by the ED, CBI, and the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The case is set for a hearing on Monday. Baghel's application follows the arrest of his son, Chaitanya Baghel, by the ED in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. A close aide of the former chief minister told TOI that the plea primarily aims to contest the ED and CBI's authority, alongside the anticipatory bail petition. In his petition, Baghel stated that he fears being targeted for political reasons, similar to his son Chaitanya Baghel, who was taken into custody by the ED last month. Despite seeking protection from arrest in both the liquor scam and the Mahadev betting app cases, Baghel has assured full cooperation with the investigating agencies. Meanwhile, Chaitanya Baghel, currently held in Raipur jail, has also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court. His counsel, Faizal Rizvi, informed TOI that Chaitanya's plea asserts that his name does not appear in the ED's FIR or any witness statements and claims that his arrest is politically motivated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Chaitanya's judicial remand is due to conclude on Monday, after which he will be presented in court. The ED is anticipated to request an extension. The ED arrested Chaitanya on July 18, 2024, under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. His arrest coincided with his 38th birthday and followed what the agency described as new evidence in the alleged scam. According to Rizvi, while the ED alleged that Chaitanya received an interest-free loan of Rs 5 crore from a jeweller, documents submitted in February 2025 indicate that the loan was repaid with interest. The ED further claimed that proceeds from the liquor scam were invested in Chaitanya's real estate project. Earlier this year, the ED raided Bhupesh Baghel's residence in connection with the liquor scam. A month later, the CBI conducted searches at his home regarding the Mahadev betting app case. Raids were also carried out at the residences of his former OSDs. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Bribery charges: CBI arrests customs official in dramatic chase in Navi Mumbai
Mumbai: CBI arrested Krishna Kumar, superintendent of customs, stationed at Sahar Air Cargo, following a dramatic chase in his residential colony in Kharghar at Navi Mumbai on Saturday night. Kumar was apprehended after he accepted a bribe of Rs 10.2 lakh. Kumar also fixed a rate card for cleaning the complainant's consignment in the future, said the CBI. CBI officials produced Kumar before the court, and he has been remanded into CBI custody until August 6. CBI sources said that Kumar had blocked the complainant's consignment with the help of the Rummaging and Intelligence (R&I) wing of Customs by sending a pseudonymous email. Kumar promised to release the complainant's consignment in exchange for a bribe, stating that the majority of the money would go to his seniors. The CBI is investigating the roles of R&I wing officials and Kumar's superiors in the case. On Saturday, Kumar called the complainant outside his residential colony in Kharghar and asked him to sit in his car. After collecting the bribe, Kumar instructed the complainant to leave and drove his car into the colony. The CBI team followed him, leading Kumar to suspect that something was amiss. He continuously moved his vehicle within the society's premises and, during the pursuit, threw the money bag. The CBI subsequently recovered the money. The CBI stated that Kumar and other unidentified public servants were demanding bribes at the rate of Rs 10 per kilogram of imported cargo, both for himself and on behalf of senior officers, to ensure the smooth clearance of consignments. The complainant refused to pay the bribe despite Kumar's persistent attempts and deliberate withholding of his consignments to exert pressure. Consequently, it prompted the complainant to approach the CBI. The CBI recorded conversations between Kumar and the complainant on multiple occasions between July 25 and August 1. In these conversations, Kumar pressured the complainant to pay Rs 6 lakh which was a bribe for the coachmen cleared on an earlier occasion, claiming that only Rs 20,000 was his share, with the remaining amount intended for senior officers for previously cleared consignments. Kumar also demanded a Rs 10 lakh bribe for releasing the withheld consignment and set a future rate of Rs 10 per kilogram. Customs officer nabbed taking Rs 10 lakh bribe in Mumbai
The CBI has arrested a customs superintendent posted at Sahar airport in Mumbai, for allegedly taking a Rs 10.20 lakh bribe from an agent, an official said Sunday. The central probe agency booked Krishan Kumar for allegedly demanding a bribe at the rate of Rs 10 per kg for facilitating clearance of imported consignments from a customs house agent, a CBI spokesperson said. It was also alleged that Kumar threatened the agent when he refused to pay the bribe, and deliberately withheld consignments. The CBI conducted a verification of the allegations between July 25 and August 1 in the presence of independent witnesses, and corroborated the demand for a bribe from covertly recorded conversations and other evidence. "The accused was found to have demanded Rs 6 lakhs (Rs 5,80,000 for his senior officers; Rs 20,000 as his share for himself) against previously cleared consignments; Rs 10,00,000 for facilitating release of a currently held consignment; and Rs 10 per kg for smooth clearance of future consignments," the spokesperson said. The agency laid a trap and caught Kumar red-handed taking Rs 10.20 lakh bribe on Saturday, she said. He was produced before the Special Court in Mumbai, which granted the CBI his remand till August 6.
