Scottish pub with mysterious 17th century love story sold for new development plans
At one time, newlyweds across the British Isles marked their marriage by carving their initials and wedding date into stones placed above the doorways of their first homes.
These 'marriage lintels' are usually found on stately homes and historic buildings, making it rare to spot one in a pub.
But drinkers at The Stag Inn in Falkland, Fife, are in for a unique treat. This historic pub, located just a stone's throw from Falkland Palace, boasts a lintel carved with the initials IL and EF, a heart, and the date 1680, Scottish Daily Express reports.
Though the story of the lovers behind these markings remains a mystery, their legacy endures as visitors raise a glass in their honour.
Falkland Palace itself is a stunning example of Scottish Renaissance architecture, commissioned between 1501 and 1541 by King James IV and his son, James V.
Built as a 'pleasure palace' for falconry and hunting, it was frequently used by the Stuart kings. Mary, Queen of Scots, once remarked that the palace reminded her of the chateaux of the French Royal Court where she was raised.
With its magnificent turrets and grand archway, the palace's entrance looks as if it has stepped out of a fairytale.
Inside, visitors can explore exquisite features such as the detailed panelling in the drawing room, the beautiful Chapel Royal where mass is still held every Sunday, the fascinating painted walls of the library, and re-created royal apartments.
The tranquil grounds offer even more to discover, including Britain's oldest real tennis court, built for King James V, and an ancient orchard with a wildflower meadow.
The extensive formal garden was designed by Percy Cane, and visitors can also enjoy a physic garden filled with Renaissance-era herbal remedies.
The village of Falkland itself sits picturesque on the banks of the River Eden just north of Glenrothes. Home to just over 1,000 people, it is also famous as the ancestral home of American country music legend Johnny Cash.
Recently, the freehold of The Stag Inn was sold by business property specialists Christie & Co. The pub, formerly owned by Bruce Taverns, has been purchased by a local family with ambitious plans for its development.

Scott Piatkowski of Bruce Taverns said: 'We are delighted to achieve this freehold sale, after what started out as the sale of a new lease. We would like to thank Simon Watson for his perseverance in finding the right buyer to take the pub forward.'
Simon Watson, Business Agent for Pubs and Restaurants at Christie & Co, added: 'This sale demonstrates that appetite is still strong for traditional pubs in rural parts of Scotland, despite trade-related headwinds.
"If you are considering selling, I would encourage you to get in touch with us to discuss your exit plans.'
The Stag Inn's freehold was sold for an undisclosed sum.

These are the 10 best cities for sober travel in the U.S.
We can all be thankful that sober travel is on the rise. While drinking a beautiful cocktail while light filters through your glass at sunset constitutes many a travel photo—and while a raucous bar or club scene may also be part of your itinerary—the fact is that alert and appreciative experiences (i.e., sober experiences) make for a stronger vacation. And for those in recovery, it's not just a preference; it's a requirement. A mocktail can be a band-aid, but a better alternative is to seek out different activities that keep you away from that shelf of glistening bottles. A new study from Sana Lake Recovery has just come out that analyzes and ranks American cities for their availability of sober-friendly activities. Some examples of these activities include hiking trails, fitness studios that welcome drop-ins, museums and even AA meetings. The first city on the list of best places to travel sober is St. Louis, Missouri. Along with 123 hiking trails and 120 fitness studios to choose from, the city boasts several greenspaces to bring a picnic and connect with nature. At Forest Park, visit a 75-foot waterfall, see animals at the zoo and enjoy the World's Fair Pavilion. St. Louis has 10 mocktail bars, such as the Sans Bar STL, whose charming motto is 'shaken not slurred.' (Sans is French for 'without,' which is fitting). Museums like the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum also fill your vacation days with interesting experiences. Second on the best sober cities list is Oakland, California. Hiking here is amazing—in the Oakland hills you'll find aromatic quietude in the trails that wind through redwood groves. And for a quick urban walk, Lake Merritt's circumference is about 3 miles. There are more than 300 hiking trails, 120 fitness studios and 33 different museums to stimulate your travel. Oakland has five mocktail bars and two gorgeous, restored movie palaces (the Fox and the Paramount) where you can take tours or see live shows, depending on their schedule. Coming in third is Portland, Oregon, which has the most mocktail bars of any city on the list: 11. It also has 270 hiking trails to choose from, some of which are found in the 5,200-acre Forest Park—one of the largest urban forests in the country. Eighty miles of trails run beneath its sun-dappled canopy. Portland offers 122 fitness studios and 34 museums, including the Portland Art Museum and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We also love the Food Truck Park that offers fun browsing and even more fun eating. With not too much effort, you can locate experiences in most cities that support a booze-free vacation. Look for drop-in yoga or Zumba classes, bring your tennis racket, get a NARM membership to visit museums for free wherever you travel and take time to organize a picnic in nature. Here are the top 10 cities for sober travel: 1. St. Louis, Missouri 2. Oakland, California 3. Portland, Oregon 4. Minneapolis, Minnesota 5. Seattle, Washington 6. Colorado Springs, Colorado 7. Tucson, Arizona 8. Miami, Florida 9. Tampa, Florida 10. San Francisco, California

It's official: One of Britain's most affordable seaside towns is now home to the UK's best ice cream parlours
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ONE of the best seaside towns in the UK is home to a very popular ice cream parlour. BBC Good Food has found the crème de la crème of ice cream parlours around the country and Harbour Bar in Scarborough was rated very highly. It has unmissable red lettering, a diner looking bar with red booths and stools. You can pick up tall ice cream sundaes from Bananarama, to Eton Mess, Chocolata and Mandarino. The Harbour Bar is known for its 'Mega Cones' - which are a lot longer than your average ice cream cone. They also serve toasted waffles topped with a range of ice cream and fruit. As for drinks, it has a selection of soda floats and milk shakes. Harbour Bar was established in 1945 and has remained a family-owned business ever since. Another reason as to why it's such a good parlour is that the ice cream isn't bought in, it's churned in a small factory behind the shop. Good Food described the ice cream parlour as being "big and brash, but hugely fun and buzzy." One visitor on Tripadvisor wrote "We heard about this place and absolutely HAD to visit. The place is amazing. It's like a 1950s American ice cream parlour." "We decided on a Knickerbocker glory and the Pear Valentino both were excellent and we loved it. So we can definitely highly recommend this place and you MUST visit it when you come to Scarborough 10/10." In April, Conde Nasté Traveller declared it to be one of the best in the country, and an essential summer stop for 2025. The town has even been called 'Scarbados' thanks to two very long stretches of sandy beaches called North and South Bay. Scarborough is one of the UK's oldest seaside towns, and it has an ancient castle, spectacular cliffs and Tudor streets. Vincent's Pier is the longest in Scarborough and has a lookout, cafe, and restaurant. It's a great place to visit with affordable cafes like Seastrand which is inside the oldest Funicular railway station. Travel Reporter Helen Wright visited and found you can get a cup of tea and a flapjack for £3.50 - and she discovered the best spots for cheap parking. There's lots still to come for Scarborough, including the possible construction of an outdoor tidal lido at the top of Scarborough South Bay. If approved, the pool would have sand running into it and a sheltered beach and bathing area for children. Here are Sun Travel's favourite seaside towns that are less than 90 minutes from London. And the cheap UK seaside towns – where a day out for the whole family costs from just £25. Top 20 Ice Cream Parlours in the UK These are Good Food's top 20 ice cream parlours in the UK...
