
'Perfect fit': Irish firm Fexco acquires Sainsbury's Travel Money business
Offering foreign exchange and payment services, Fexco operates an extensive network of travel money stores and agents across Ireland, Britain and the Pacific.
The Kilorglin company said the Sainsbury's deal will significantly expand its British operations, giving it control of more than 220 travel money bureaux within the supermarket chain's stores

Fexco says the deal, which includes Sainsbury's digital platforms as well as outlets, will place the company among the top five players in the sector.
It also opens up access to over 18m Nectar members, offering an opportunity to extend Fexco's travel money services.
Bláthnaid Bergin, Sainsbury's Chief Financial Officer, said customers in Britain will see no immediate changes, with the Sainsbury's Travel Money brand continuing as normal.
"Travel money is a service our customers value and we're pleased to be entering a new long-term partnership with Fexco Group that ensures they can continue to access foreign exchange both in-store and online with the same ease and confidence," she said.
"With over 220 bureaux nationwide and almost 10 per cent of the UK market, this is a well-established part of our offer and we're pleased it will continue under the Sainsbury's brand.
"With specialist expertise and a strong track record in foreign exchange, Fexco Group is a strong fit for our business.
"I'm also pleased to confirm that there will be no immediate changes, and customers can expect the same high level of service they know and trust."
Fexco say full integration is planned for early 2026.

Irish whiskey exporters may be forced to look at other markets if 15% tariff rate applies
Some Irish whiskey exporters may be forced 'to reorientate their focus away' from the US if a 15 per cent tariff rate applies as part of the recently agreed EU-US trade deal, the head of the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) has warned. 'With a higher tariff, the costs associated with exporting will increase and we could see price on shelf go up also,' IWA director Eoin Ó Catháin said. 'I don't think a 15 per cent tariff would exclude people from exporting per se, but it may see certain companies re-orient strategy towards other markets,' he said. Mr Ó Catháin was responding to reports that the EU had so far failed to secure a carve out for the sensitive wine and spirits sector. READ MORE '[It is] not our expectation that wine and spirits will be included in the first group [of exemptions to be] announced by the US tomorrow, therefore those products will be captured by the 15 per cent ceiling,' said Olof Gill, EU trade spokesperson, adding that negotiations continued. The statement comes as US trading partners are rushing to finalise tariff deals ahead of president Donald Trump's deadline of August 1st. Last weekend, the EU agreed a deal for tariffs of 15 per cent on most exports to the US. The European Commission also signalled on Thursday that a planned EU-US joint statement fleshing out their trade deal could be delayed, saying that 'more time is required' to finalise the text. EU officials had previously expected the joint statement to be issued on Friday. However, the commission said it still expects the US to implement the 15 per cent tariff rate and a number of agreed exemptions as of Friday, though it said this was dependent on Trump signing an executive order. 'The Irish Whiskey Association notes media reports today which indicate that our products will face a 15 per cent tariff when exporting to the USA from August 1st,' Mr Ó Catháin said. 'We understand that negotiations will continue past this deadline, and a return to the zero-for-zero remains a priority for the spirits sector in both the USA and the EU,' he said. 'The application of this tariff will increase costs for both exporters and consumers, and will have knock-on effects on the hospitality and tourism sectors in the USA,' he said. 'The zero-for-zero trade arrangement, which removed tariffs on our products in 1997, worked well for over three decades. It has never been more important to return to this as soon as possible,' he added. Meanwhile Trump said on Thursday he would delay the higher rate of reciprocal tariffs on Mexico by 90 days. Following a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, he said he would extend 'the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time'. Construction of first Dublin bus corridor of BusConnects project to start within weeks
Work will begin on the 9.2km corridor from Liffey Valley in west Dublin to the city centre in September and it is to be completed in three years. The cost is expected put between €198m to €247m, with Irish firm GMC Group getting the main contract. Announcing the contract and work schedule, Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien, said the project would transform bus use in the city. Passenger numbers on services using the corridor were expected to rise by 58pc, and an increase of 45pc in walkers and cyclists was expected on the accompanying new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. 'Today marks a major turning point for BusConnects and for public transport in Dublin,' Mr O'Brien said. 'BusConnects is about futureproofing our city's transport network – creating a cleaner, better connected city that works for commuters, communities and the climate.' Dublin already has numerous bus lanes but the bus corridors will be exclusively for buses, with priority access at junctions and traffic lights. Twelve corridors have been designed, each running from a point near the city centre to a suburb or splitting half-way to serve two suburbs. They will run to a total length of 230km and be accompanied by 200km of new or improved cycle lanes. Road widening to create the corridors will require shaving off parts of the gardens and grounds of hundreds of homes and business premises with hundreds of roadside parking spaces and trees also to be removed. ADVERTISEMENT Contracts for a second corridor, running to Ballymun and Finglas, are due to be signed before the end of this year with construction to begin early in 2026. A third, the route serving Tallaght and Clondalkin, is to go to tender late this year. The other nine corridors have planning permission but six are being challenged in the courts. Mr O'Brien said he could not give a timeframe for the completion of the entire project as a result. However, he said he expected commenced projects would stick to targets. In preparing the contracts, he said: 'I emphasised two things – on time and on budget.' The Minister also said he was hopeful of MetroLink getting planning permission shortly. He said he disagreed with recent comments by Ryanair boss, Michael O'Leary, that the project was an unnecessary waste of money that wasn't needed for Dublin Airport. 'I'm not sure if Michael has looked at the business case for Metro – that for every euro invested there will be a return of €4 to the economy and the exchequer,' he said. The Minister confirmed that the extension of free travel for children up to eight would go ahead 'in September or October'. He gave no assurances around the continuation of the 20pc cut in public transport fares introduced during the cost of living crisis, however. He also said he expected that contactless payment on public transport would begin from late 2027.

Way now clear for billionaire James Dyson to build helicopter landing area at sprawling Waterford estate
The ruling by An Coimisiún Pleanála follows a decision by Waterford City and County Council to grant planning permission for the landing pad as well as a new wastewater treatment for Ballynatray House on the Ballynatray Estate on the Cork-Waterford border outside Youghal. The plans for the helicopter landing area had been criticised for disturbing local wildlife 'for the sake of one person's travelling convenience'. The planning application was made in the name of Christopher Nicholson, the manager of Ballynatray Estate. Dyson – one of Britain's richest individuals and one of the strongest advocates in support of the Brexit campaign for Britain to leave the EU – bought Ballynatray House, a protected structure, and its 850-acre estate for €29.25m last year. Its previous owner, Henry Gwyn-Jones, a British property developer, had bought the estate for more than €11m in 2004. In a letter on the planning files, Dyson confirmed he was the ultimate beneficial owner of the property, which is held on his behalf by Glashedy Fitzwilliam Trustees Limited. Ballynatray House had been operated as an exclusive country house with guest accommodation by its previous owner, but planning files show Dyson intends to use the mansion as a single residence. The proposed helicopter landing area is located around 525 metres to the north-east of Ballynatray House in an agricultural field screened from the mansion by planting. An environmental report submitted with the planning application said it had been 'objectively concluded that the proposed development will not adversely affect the integrity of Natura 2000 sites and there is no reasonable scientific doubt in relation to this conclusion'. Natura 2000 is a network of protected areas covering Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats. A consultant hired by the applicant said the ecological impact would be 'low and localised in the long term' He added: 'Although there may be short-term disturbance during the work phase, no significant impacts on birds or important mammals are expected to occur.' Other reports also said the proposed development would have no impact on the house, which was constructed in 1795-1797. The objector, David Orr, who lives across from Ballynatray House on the opposite side of the Blackwater, said the landing area would have a high impact on the surrounding environment from helicopters approaching, taking off and landing. Mr Orr claimed the relatively low-level approach currently used by a helicopter landing at Ballynatray House was directly over Ardsallagh Woodlands, which was part of a Special Conservation Area. He said it posed 'a high risk of disturbance to wildlife within the surrounding area' that was home to a large number of species of birds and mammals. Mr Orr said the woodlands were an important nesting site for a range of birds including herons, egrets, cormorants, owls and buzzards as well as being a habitat for otters, red squirrels, badgers, foxes, fallow deer and stoats. He claimed that 'this little oasis' was very vulnerable to disturbance and that the intrusion of helicopters into an environmentally sensitive area would be detrimental. 'It seems to be that for the sake of one person's travelling convenience a large number of both human and non-human inhabitants of this area are going to be disturbed,' Mr Orr said. Planning documents submitted on behalf of Dyson noted that the responsibility of taking on such an important estate and designed landscape was understood. They revealed that long-term plans included woodland management and the continued repair and conservation of Molana Abbey and Templemichael Church, which are located within the estate. An Coimisiún Pleanála ruled that Mr Orr's appeal was invalid as it was not accompanied by an acknowledgement by Waterford City and County council of his original submission on the planning application.
