Revving up: Renault gets keys to Nissan's TN plant

CHENNAI: Four months after Renault Group announced its intent to buy out Nissan's 51% stake in joint India plant RNAIPL (Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd), the French auto major has completed the acquisition and become sole owner of the Oragadam/Chennai facility. 'India is a key market for Renault Group and also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India,' said François Provost, CEO of Renault Group. The acquisition is part of Renault Group 'accelerating its development in India' said the company in a statement. Renault Group has just named Stephane Deblaise as its CEO for India effective Sept 1, 2025 to lead the next phase of the French auto major's India strategy. Since its launch in 2010, the Chennai plant has produced more than 2.8 million vehicles — including 1.2 million exported to more than 100 countries — as well as 4.6 million engines and gearboxes. Supported by nearly 300 local suppliers, the plant has an annual production capacity of more than 400,000 vehicles; it is currently using nearly 50% capacity. Going forward, the plant will continue to manufacture Nissan cars as well as have some 'kind of contract manufacturing arrangement,' the company said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Renault expects the capacity utilization at the plant to improve as new models roll out of Oragadam for both Renault and Nissan. Currently dedicated to the CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms, the Oragadam plant is preparing to host the group's new multi-energy modular platform, which will 'support the Renault brand's future models,' said the statement. The group is bullish on the local market's importance in its global strategy. 'Renault Group looks to India as a key driver of international expansion,' said the statement. This is part of a broader momentum, highlighted by the opening of Renault Group's largest design centre outside France, announced in April, and the launch of the new Triber — the first model in a product offensive that will include four new vehicles. Renault will both strengthen its sales in the Indian market and expand its exports. This is part of Renault brand's International Game Plan 2027. FIFA's decisions can be challenged outside Switzerland: European Court of Justice

The European Union's top court ruled on Friday that the decisions of world football's governing body, FIFA, can be challenged outside Switzerland, opening up a system that currently binds athletes, officials, and clubs to accept verdicts there. A statement from the European Court of Justice said that tribunals in the 27 EU member states 'must be able to carry out an in-depth review of those awards for consistency with the fundamental rules of EU law.' The ECJ ruling in Luxembourg means that EU national courts should be able to review verdicts from the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), involving other sports authorities as well. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union. 'The awards made by the CAS must be amenable to effective judicial review,' the statement said. It said that 'national courts or tribunals must be empowered to carry out ... an in-depth judicial review' to ensure that CAS rulings 'are consistent with EU public policy.' There was no immediate comment from FIFA or CAS. The decision could end a decade-long legal fight by Belgian football club RFC Seraing and Maltese investment fund Doyen Sports. They opposed FIFA rules prohibiting third-party ownership of a player's registration and transfer rights, and in 2015, asked a commercial court in Brussels to review if those rules breached EU law. The ECJ did not specifically rule on third-party ownership as such, only the scope of CAS decisions. 'From a quick reading of the decision, it's clear that this is a complete victory for our clients and for the rule of law in the EU,' Seraing's lawyer, Jean-Louis Dupont, told The Associated Press. CAS was created in 1984 to give sports a unified and binding legal forum for settling disputes and appeals based in the International Olympic Committee's home city of Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the mandatory path for athletes to challenge disciplinary and appeal judgments by Olympic sports federations. It rules on cases across dozens of sports and is a key authority in doping cases. READ — La Liga 2025-26: Real Madrid's request to postpone opener denied, report says Football is by far the biggest client in the CAS caseload of about 950 registered each year. FIFA's contribution of 2.5 million Swiss francs (USD 2.75 million) to CAS in 2023 was more than 10 per cent of the court's revenue that year. CAS verdicts can be challenged at Switzerland's supreme court in Lausanne on limited procedural grounds and are rarely overturned. Seraing and Doyen lost at the Swiss Federal Tribunal in 2018. The ECJ said any CAS decision that binds other courts or tribunals from acting 'are contrary to EU law.' The ruling marks a new legal blow to the authority of sports bodies in Switzerland. The same European court in Luxembourg has handed down two other major rulings in the last two years under EU competition law—in the Super League case and the Lassana Diarra transfer dispute—that challenged the authority of football bodies FIFA and UEFA.

Nissan drops new teaser: Is this the upcoming Renault Triber-based 7-seater MPV?

Nissan Motor India has dropped a new teaser about something under development, and it is expected to be the upcoming Renault Triber-based MPV. The Japanese carmaker had earlier announced that it is working on a new B-segment MPV as part of its future portfolio in India and it is expected to launch in 2026 with an official debut later this year. The teaser does not reveal any details about the upcoming MPV, and much of what is currently known was announced earlier this year. This three-row seven-seater will be based on the same CMF-A+ platform that currently underpins the Renault Triber. Nissan will, however, position it as a standalone model rather than a simple rebadge, bringing a distinct design and interior. Nissan's MPV appears to carry over similar design elements seen on the recently-launched Renault Triber facelift, while bringing a distinct look that sets it apart. It is likely to retain the new grille and headlamp design, but will offer a larger front bumper with C-shaped elements flanking the lower grille. The rear-end is expected to sport a tweaked set of LED taillights, and the MPV will come with a new set of alloys and roof rails. The interior has not been revealed yet, but Nissan is highly likely to carry over all the recent upgrades with the facelifted Triber while offering a different style. The upcoming MPV is expected to be offered with the new digital console and infotainment system seen on the Renault model, while retaining the practical seven-seater layout. Nissan B-MPV: Powertrain The MPV is expected to be powered by the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that powers the Triber. This petrol unit makes 71 bhp and 96 Nm of torque and can be mated to either a five-speed manual or an AMT. These include a five-seater and a seven-seater C-SUV alongside a mass-market EV. Nissan has stated that the B-MPV, as well as the five-seater C-SUV, are currently in the pre-production phase, and both will be launched in 2026. The C-segment SUV will be based on the CMF-B platform that underpins the Renault Duster and is positioned to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Nissan will follow it up with a premium seven-seater SUV to be based on the Dacia Bigster, a stretched-out variant of the Duster. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India.
