IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Jamie Smith betters captain Ben Stokes' record, becomes first England batter to...
Jamie Smith lit up Edgbaston on Day 3 of the second Test with a blistering century that not only revived England's innings but also etched his name in the record books. The 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter brought up his hundred in just 80 balls against a relentless Indian attack, making it the joint-third fastest Test century for England in terms of balls faced.
In doing so, Smith overtook
Ben Stokes
, his current captain, whose fastest was an 85-ball ton against New Zealand at Lord's in 2015.
The milestone came at a crucial point of the game. England had been reduced to 77/3 at stumps on Day 2 and lost both Joe Root and Stokes early on Day 3. The latter departed for a golden duck, the first such dismissal in his Test career. But just when India looked set to tighten their grip on the game, Smith and Harry Brook counterpunched with centuries that kept England afloat.
Fastest Test centuries for England (by balls faced)
76 – Gilbert Jessop vs Australia, The Oval, 1902
77 – Jonny Bairstow vs New Zealand, Trent Bridge, 2022
80 – Harry Brook vs Pakistan, Rawalpindi, 2022
80 – Jamie Smith vs India, Edgbaston, 2025
85 – Ben Stokes vs New Zealand, Lord's, 2015
Tracing Moeen Ali's steps in Birmingham
Additionally, Smith is also the first England batter to score 100+ runs in a session before lunch, having not been unbeaten overnight.
Brook, whose name also features just above Smith in the list of fastest centuries, looked equally confident in his approach. His century also set another record, as he became the player with the third-lowest innings needed to reach 9 tons for England in Tests. Brook's record of 44 innings is only behind Herbert Sutcliffe (43) and Denis Compton (37).

'Impressive antagonist': Aaron Rodgers slammed as ‘isolated' and ‘dismissive' in shocking claims from ex-NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith
DeMaurice Smith calls out Aaron Rodgers' arrogance and isolation in his new insider NFL book (Getty Images) As former NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith prepares to launch his upcoming book Turf Wars this August, early excerpts have already sparked controversy — and none more so than his scathing remarks about Green Bay Packers legend Aaron Rodgers . The pages offer a rare, brutally honest behind-the-scenes account of Smith's 14-year tenure, and Rodgers seems to be one of his main targets. Aaron Rodgers' leadership style questioned as DeMaurice Smith unleashes bold criticism in new release Aaron Rodgers, who has long carried a reputation for being outspoken and defiant, apparently left a lasting impression on Smith — and not in a good way. Recalling a players' meeting where Rodgers expressed opposition to the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Smith painted a picture of someone detached and disruptive. 'The god of Cheesehead Nation was isolated and dismissive,' Smith wrote. 'He sat in the back row of the meeting room, issuing loud sighs before standing for a dramatic exit. An incredible quarterback, to be sure, but an even more impressive antagonist.' That quote alone shows how deep Smith's frustrations ran. But it didn't stop there. Sharing a moment from August 2021, Smith wrote, 'My phone chirped with a text from Aaron Rodgers. 'Can you call me?' it read. Could I not run into traffic instead?' The quip underscores a working relationship that, at best, was strained — and at worst, nonexistent. For someone in Smith's position, personal tensions with high-profile players can't be allowed to derail broader union goals. But Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer and one of the league's most visible personalities, clearly didn't mesh with the leadership style or philosophy of the NFLPA head. The friction might not surprise those familiar with Rodgers' contentious public stances over the years, including his well-documented issues with both management and media. Interestingly, Smith's criticism wasn't limited to Rodgers. He also took a jab at Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, saying, 'If Jerry Jones saw a dollar bill on the ground, I truly believe he'd stop and pick it up.' The comment further illustrates the tone of the book — candid, unfiltered, and sure to ruffle some feathers in both player and ownership circles. Rodgers, for his part, recently made headlines by announcing his decision to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025 — a move that many believe will mark the final chapter of his illustrious career. With rumors swirling about his recent marriage, it appears the quarterback may be preparing to step away from football and into a new personal era. Whether Rodgers responds to Smith's remarks remains to be seen, but one can definitely say that the turf wars is shaping up to be one of the most buzzworthy NFL books in recent memory. Edmonton Oilers' interest in Carter Hart sends disturbing message to sexual assault survivors
Oilers are reportedly considering signing Carter Hart (Getty Images) The Edmonton Oilers' goaltending situation has come under sharp scrutiny after back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances ended in disappointment. Now, in a bold and controversial twist, the Oilers are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Carter Hart—pending major legal and league developments. Legal cloud over Carter Hart 's future complicates Oilers' interest NHL insider Kevin Weekes has hinted that there is 'mutual interest' between Hart and the Oilers, despite the shadow of the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault investigation still looming over the young goalie's future. While Hart hasn't played in the NHL since stepping away in 2024, he remains a high-upside netminder with untapped potential—if cleared to return. Hart is one of five players currently facing accusations in connection with the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault case. His future in the NHL will depend entirely on the outcome of the trial and any disciplinary measures the league may impose. For the Oilers, who already faced backlash for hiring Stan Bowman—linked to the Chicago Blackhawks' Kyle Beach scandal—adding Hart would risk igniting another public relations firestorm. As one columnist put it: 'It is nothing short of a PR nightmare if the Oilers consider signing him.' Still, the potential fit is undeniable from a hockey standpoint. Hart, an Edmonton native and longtime friend of current Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, could theoretically help shore up the team's goaltending woes. In his last NHL season, Hart posted a respectable 2.80 GAA and .906 save percentage in 25 starts for the Flyers. Over his career, he's played 227 games with a .906 SV%—solid numbers for a 25-year-old with room to grow. President of hockey operations Stan Bowman has publicly identified goaltending and forward depth as key areas needing improvement. With the team aiming to get 'faster and younger,' Hart checks both boxes—on paper. But given the gravity of the allegations surrounding him, even speculation of his signing is polarizing the fanbase. Also Read: Who is Carter Hart? The Canadian hockey star accused in the Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal For now, it's all speculation. But if Hart is cleared legally, and if the Oilers are willing to weather the backlash, this potential move could become the most controversial transaction of the 2025 offseason.
