New district in Iraq: Diyala's Qara Tapa elevated
On Wednesday, Iraq's Planning Ministry approved the elevation of Qara Tapa to district status in Diyala province, according to ministry spokesperson Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi.
The move, al-Hindawi asserted, followed confirmation that Qara Tapa met national planning standards through a feasibility study conducted by the ministry's Regional and Local Development Department.
Elevating Qara Tapa to district status is expected to enhance local service delivery, spur job creation, and support urban and rural development through more focused governance.
Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad and home to nearly 1.6 million people across diverse communities of Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen, has faced challenges in infrastructure delivery and regional development.

'We have fulfilled our commitments, but the federal government has not honored its side of the agreement,' Sadiq noted. Sadiq also pointed to efforts by the federal government aimed at 'weakening and economically marginalizing Kurdistan', warning that opposition parties in the Region are further undermining its constitutional status. Since May, tensions have escalated between Erbil and Baghdad over the release of public sector salaries. Iraqi authorities linked disbursements to the Kurdistan Region's full transfer of oil exports to the state-run SOMO company, along with increased oversight of non-oil revenues. The Kurdish government rejected those terms as exceeding earlier agreements. The resulting deadlock has delayed salary payments for hundreds of thousands of public employees in the Region. As a temporary measure, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani authorized the payment of May's salaries through a federal loan, pending further resolution.

Iraq's internal public debt edges down slightly in April
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's internal public debt recorded a slight decrease at the end of April 2025, according to official figures released Thursday by the Central Bank (CBI). The Bank reported that the country's internal debt fell to 85.503T Iraqi dinars, down from 85.536 trillion dinars recorded in March. The decline, it explained, was driven primarily by the repayment of loans held by financial institutions, which dropped to 19.119T dinars from 19.152T dinars the previous month. The remaining debt portfolio includes 756B dinars owed by the Ministry of Finance, 51.030T dinars in treasury transfers held by the Central Bank and commercial banks, and an additional 2.030T dinars in treasury transfers specifically attributed to the Ministry of Finance.

Iraq's drilling success: 113 new oil wells completed in H1 2025

In a statement, the Ministry noted that company crews drilled 27 new wells and rehabilitated 86 during this period, in line with efforts to raise production levels and improve the efficiency of oil fields. Hassan Mohammed Hassan, the company's director general, underscored the continued commitment of national staff to maintain high performance despite field challenges, pointing to the company's emphasis on developing workforce capabilities while also ensuring a safe and integrated work environment that supports timely project delivery. The oil sector remains the cornerstone of Iraq's economy, generating approximately 127.5 trillion Iraqi dinars (around $90 billion) in revenues during 2024—accounting for over 91% of federal income and nearly 88% of total state revenue.
