Consumer electronics reshuffle: Panasonic exits refrigerators and washing machines in India, to focus on HVAC and B2B
Japanese electronics major Panasonic has exited India's refrigerator and washing machine segments as part of a global restructuring strategy, marking a shift toward more profitable and future-ready verticals such as HVAC, B2B, and home automation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The two segments had been loss-making for the company in India, where it struggled to gain market share. According to GfK data, Panasonic's market share stood at just 1.8% for washing machines and 0.8% for refrigerators, with six consecutive years of sales losses reported in both categories. 'This is in line with our global strategy and evolving market dynamics,' a Panasonic Life Solutions India spokesperson said in a statement, quoted PTI. 'We will focus on HVAC – commercial and residential – and televisions in the Panasonic Consumer Business category, and discontinue washing machines and refrigerators.' The company will support dealers in liquidating existing inventory and will continue to offer full customer service including parts and warranty coverage, the spokesperson added. The decision follows a broader directive by Panasonic Group CEO Yuki Kusumi, who in May announced plans to exit unprofitable businesses globally in order to break stagnation and drive future growth, PTI reported. For its India operations, Panasonic will continue to invest in key verticals such as home automation, electricals, energy solutions, and B2B technologies. Its consumer electronics portfolio—spanning air conditioners, televisions, kitchen appliances, beauty products, and Lumix cameras—will remain intact, the company clarified. 'In our journey towards long-term sustainable growth, we acknowledge that the evolving business model has led to certain roles being restructured,' the spokesperson said. 'This is a difficult but necessary step, and we deeply appreciate the contributions of our impacted employees.' Panasonic India reported revenue of around Rs 11,500 crore in FY25, posting double-digit growth overall.

Tata Harrier EV vs Harrier Diesel: Is the Rs 1 lakh premium justified?
With the Tata Harrier EV finally launched, buyers are eager to know whether the electric SUV offers better value than its diesel-powered sibling. Priced at Rs 27.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec Empowered RWD variant, the Harrier EV costs roughly Rs 1 lakh more than the Harrier Fearless+ Stealth Edition automatic diesel, which is priced at Rs 26.50 lakh. Dimensions & Storage: Both SUVs are nearly identical in size, but the Harrier EV offers a slight edge with 57 litres more boot space and a frunk (front trunk) of up to 67 litres in the RWD version—something the diesel Harrier lacks entirely. Powertrain Comparison: The Harrier EV gets a 75 kWh battery delivering 238 PS of power and 315 Nm of torque, while the diesel Harrier produces 170 PS and 350 Nm with a 2.0-litre engine. Despite offering slightly less torque, the EV excels in power and offers an impressive claimed range of 627 km on a single charge. Feature Showdown: Both SUVs are well-equipped, but the Harrier EV brings a few extras: Larger 14.5-inch QLED infotainment touchscreen 540-degree camera with transparent terrain view Auto park assist and a digital IRVM with dashcam More powerful Dolby Atmos sound system Wing-type rear headrests and 'boss mode' for co-driver seat 65W fast charging USB-C ports and V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability Shared Features Include: Panoramic sunroof with voice assist Level-2 ADAS Ventilated front seats Dual-zone climate control Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay 360-degree cameras and 7 airbags Verdict: The Harrier EV offers significant improvements in power, tech, comfort, and storage. While its Rs 1 lakh premium over the diesel variant may raise eyebrows, the added features, electric performance, and long-range capability make it a well-rounded and future-ready SUV. Still, for those who frequently drive long distances or lack access to reliable EV infrastructure, the diesel Harrier remains a practical and proven option. But if you're ready to go electric, the Harrier EV more than justifies its premium.

The EV influx
The newly announced incentive scheme for foreign carmakers to make EVs in India is about to get off the ground. According to government sources, a lot of carmakers have evinced interest in registering for the scheme. This includes some who are already present in the country as well as new companies taking the opportunity to establish a manufacturing base in India. But that does not mean there will be a long wait for new cars at lower prices, because once registered, these companies can start importing EVs at a duty of 15 per cent as opposed to 70 or 100 per cent as the case may be. The number of cars that can be imported at the incentivised rate is governed by the total amount the company is saving by paying duty at a lower rate. This amount can be equal to the total amount the company has invested under the scheme—the saving being capped at Rs 6,484 crore. Of course, there are a lot more stipulations and caveats to this and it is not as simple as it sounds.
