Kansas City Chiefs sign Trey Smith to $94M deal, top-paid NFL guard: Report

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs and Trey Smith are finalizing a four-year, $94 million extension with $70 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The new deal replaces the franchise tag given to Smith in February. Rapoport said Smith is now set to be the highest-paid guard in the NFL. End Zone Extra: Get the top Chiefs news and insider features all season long Smith was tagged back in February, giving him a one-year contract worth $23.4 million and starting the countdown to July 15. He would've been locked into playing under the tag had the two sides not come to a long-term agreement. It's safe to say Patrick Mahomes is happy about the deal. After a devastating Super Bowl LIX loss, many fans believed that Smith would be a player the Chiefs would be forced to part ways. However, an increase in the league's salary cap has made the franchise tag possible. Kansas City Chiefs: Read more stories from FOX4 In 2024, Smith started 17 games for Kansas City. In those 17 games he allowed only a sack and a half, according to NFL Next Gen Stats and ESPN. Smith's overall, pass blocking and run-blocking grades were all well above league average as well, per Pro Football Focus. The Chiefs' report day for training camp is this Sunday, and they will start practicing on Monday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. In signing with Rockets, Dorian Finney-Smith sees ‘great team' with a chance to be special

'I think we've got a great team, and I think we can do something special,' Dorian Finney-Smith says of his choice to join the Rockets in free agency. Houston Rockets forward Dorian Finney-Smith returned to his hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, last weekend to give back to the community. It was the Finney Family First Foundation's ninth annual free basketball camp and softball tournament, per WAVY-TV, the regional NBC affiliate. In an extended interview with the station, the 32-year-old spoke to a local reporter regarding both his community initiatives and NBA topics, headlined by his new deal with the Rockets. Houston finished at 52-30 and No. 2 in the Western Conference last season, and expectations are even higher after its offseason trade for All-Star forward Kevin Durant. Because the Rockets were able to supplement that acquisition with the signing of quality veteran free agents, such as Finney-Smith and Clint Capela, optimism continues to build. 'I think we've got a great team, and I think we can do something special,' said Finney-Smith, who is widely known around the NBA for his combination of versatile defense and reliable 3-point shooting (41.1% last season). 'I already know who they are. They play hard. Coach Ime (Udoka) is one of the toughest coaches in the league. I've never seen him smile much when you're playing against him. The first time I've ever seen him smile was when we had dinner, like two weeks ago. I like that, because I'm a competitor.' After being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers midway through last season, Finney-Smith said he entered the offseason expecting to stick around. But the right deal was apparently in Houston, and Lakers star Luka Doncic — who Finney-Smith also played alongside for several seasons with the Mavericks — was understanding of the decision. 'He cares,' Finney-Smith said of Doncic. 'When I went to the Rockets, he shot me a text saying, 'I'm happy for you. I'm proud of you. I know you're excited to be back with your kids and family.'' Finney-Smith's family still lives in Dallas after his time with the Mavs, and the ability to sign with another Texas team in relatively close proximity likely worked to Houston's benefit during the negotiations. 'Closer to the family, and an easier transition,' said Finney-Smith, whose deal with the Rockets is worth at least $26 million over two seasons (it can be for as many as four years and $53 million). As for what's next, Finney-Smith said he plans to be present when his children return to school in early August, and then it will be time to prepare for his next NBA chapter in Houston. 'We've got a mini-camp in September, so I'll probably be in Houston in two weeks, trying to look for a place,' Finney-Smith told WAVY-TV. The complete interview, which runs for almost 30 minutes, can be viewed here. More: Rockets announce signing of veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith

Three Predictions: Clemson, Illinois, Michigan

Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith has three predictions on Clemson landing a four-star offensive lineman, Illinois missing out on a top in-state target and Michigan's success in this year's NFL Draft. MORE: Ten programs that could sign the top 2026 class Advertisement CLASS OF 2025 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker 1. FOUR-STAR OT ADAM GUTHRIE COMMITS TO CLEMSON It's a great year for offensive tackles in the state of Ohio. Adam Guthrie, Maxwell Riley, Sam Greer and Ben Congdon are all sure-fire Power Four prospects. But not everyone can end up at Ohio State. Guthrie does have official visits set to Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State this summer but I've got the Tigers with a commanding lead right now. Advertisement The Tigers have always pursued Guthrie hard which matters quite a bit in this recruitment. The relationship between the Ohio four-star and offensive line coach Matt Luke is strong. Plus, the shakeup on the offensive staff in Columbus does set them back a bit here. Even if Justin Frye hadn't bolted for the NFL, I would still have Clemson as the leader here though. Things can change quickly in recruiting but I'm firing in a FutureCast for Guthrie to end up a Tiger. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH CLEMSON FANS AT 2. MACK SUTTER LEAVES ILLINOIS FOR COLLEGE. Four-star tight end Mack Sutter released a top five over the weekend of Illinois, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State. There is a lot to like about each of those programs for Sutter. Ole Miss has a fun offense with coach Lane Kiffin. Ohio State just won the national championship and will compete for it every year. Alabama runs a great offense and wins at a high level. Penn State just had the best tight end in the country with Tyler Warren. Advertisement But in-state Illinois has always played a prominent role in his recruitment. The Illini have been hot on the recruiting trail, too. However, I'm predicting that Sutter does not pick the Illini and instead joins one of the other powerhouse programs that he has to choose from. 3. THREE MICHIGAN DEFENDERS LAND IN THE FIRST ROUND © Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images There was so much talk late in the cycle about the Wolverines' surge up the recruiting rankings. That was of course in part to flipping in-state five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. But quietly the Wolverines put together another good defensive class from top to bottom. The level the team is recruiting at on defense could get a boost soon. Advertisement Defensive tackle Mason Graham, cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackle Kenneth Grant all look like locks for the first round right now. Graham could even be a top-10 pick. If it unfolds this way for Michigan, expect another big bump in recruiting. This time on the defensive side of the ball, where they are already recruiting well. Michigan's momentum as a program isn't slowing down anytime soon. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MICHIGAN FANS AT
