Malaysia backs Timor-Leste's ASEAN membership bid
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was discussed during a meeting with Timor-Leste President Dr Jose Ramos-Horta at his residence in Putrajaya today.
'Received President Timor-Leste, Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, at my residence today, further strengthening the close ties between Malaysia and Timor-Leste,' he said in a Facebook post.
Anwar added that Malaysia remains dedicated to playing a constructive role in supporting regional integration for shared stability and prosperity.
At a press conference concluding the 46th ASEAN Summit here on May 27, Anwar said that Southeast Asian leaders agreed to admit Timor-Leste as the 11th member of the regional bloc at the ASEAN Summit in October, subject to fulfilling certain outstanding conditions for full membership.
The Prime Minister said the leaders reached a consensus to support Timor-Leste in taking all necessary steps to achieve full membership in the regional bloc.
Timor-Leste, which gained independence in 2002, formally applied to join ASEAN in 2011 and was granted observer status in 2022.

Malaysia, Italy ink major deal on carbon capture and biochemical tech
ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that agreements between Petronas and Italy's ENI will spearhead one of the region's largest projects involving carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and biochemical technologies. Anwar said the initiative is expected to grow further, with new interest from Japanese firms and Indonesia's state-owned oil company, Pertamina. "Once officially launched, this will become one of the largest projects in the region involving CCUS and biochemical technology between Petronas and ENI," he said. Anwar added that the project was aimed at building regional strength and would be expanded in collaboration with Indonesia, citing increasing cooperation between Pertamina and Petronas. He also said that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had expressed interest in having Japan involved in the project. Additionally, Anwar said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is working with several Italian firms, including APG, on the development of a cross-border power grid stretching from Vietnam to Singapore. "This is a project that also supports Asean cooperation initiatives," he said, highlighting the regional nature of the infrastructure. Anwar also said that a new agreement between Perodua and Magna Steyr on electric vehicle (EV) battery development is expected to be formalised by December this year. The Prime Minister is currently on an official visit to three countries, Italy, France, and Brazil, beginning July 1.

Anwar holds talks with Italian PM Meloni to boost bilateral ties
ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at Chigi Palace, the official residence of his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni, on Thursday. Anwar, who arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to Italy, was received by Meloni before the national anthems of both countries were played. Meloni then introduced her delegation, which included Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, before Anwar introduced his. During a meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through more comprehensive cooperation. They also discussed a wide range of issues, including collaboration in the economic sector, particularly trade and investment, as well as cooperation in defence, renewable energy, environmental sustainability, agro-commodities and the digital economy. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel and the resulting humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, as well as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. Also present was Malaysian Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy increased by two per cent to RM14.61 billion (US$3.18 billion), compared to 2023. From January to May 2025, bilateral trade rose 3.3 per cent year-on-year to RM6.5 billion (US$1.48 billion). Italy remained Malaysia's fifth-largest trading partner and the third-largest importer of Malaysian palm oil among European Union member states last year. Anwar is scheduled to depart for Paris next, where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron during his two-day visit. Following that, the Prime Minister will head to Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Anwar meets Italian PM Meloni, discusses enhancing cooperation in various sectors

He was greeted by the Chief of Protocol before being escorted to Meloni. Then, the national anthems of both nations were played. Both leaders walked along the red carpet within the courtyard of Palazzo Chigi, stopping to acknowledge their national flags, and walked past the guard of honour. Meloni then introduced her delegation, followed by Anwar who did the same for his ministers. Later, the two leaders met for nearly an hour. They discussed enhancing cooperation in the field of trade, investment and defence, among other things. 'Had a productive and meaningful meeting with PM Meloni, where we reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening Malaysia–Italy relations,' Anwar said later. He said they talked about deepening strategic collaboration across key sectors including investment, defence, sustainable energy, and advanced technologies. 'We also exchanged views on critical regional and global developments. 'As chair of Asean, I highlighted Malaysia's role in enhancing Asean's engagement with key international partners such as Italy and the EU,' he said.
