After a two-year break, 134th edition of Durand Cup tournament kicks off in Manipur

Imphal: The 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, kicked off on Wednesday in Manipur after a two-year break due to the ethnic conflict in the northeastern state. The opening match of Group F was played between two football clubs from Manipur TRAU FC and NEROCA FC at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal. Football fans were excited to see the tournament return to their state, which has a rich legacy of various sports events. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla attended the opening match and took part in the inauguration ceremony. The grand opening featured vibrant cultural performances and military displays, showcasing the spirit of unity and peace. A Defence spokesperson said that this iconic tournament's revival in Manipur highlights the healing power of sports and the collective aspiration for stability, resilience, and renewed harmony in the region. It is seen as a positive step toward bringing peace and normal life back to the state. A cheerful football lover, Sanday Wangkhemcha while talking to IANS thanked the Army and other organisers for conducting the Durand Cup football tournament in Manipur. 'Amid the ethnic crisis in Manipur, the football tournament would ease the mindset of the people of the state. It would also encourage the young generations to take football as their career. We expect more important football tournaments including Santosh Trophy, Indian Super League can be held in Manipur for the benefit of the sports lovers and common people as well,' Wangkhemcha said. Other Group F matches, including games with the Indian Army Football Team would also be played at the same stadium in the upcoming days. The Durand Cup tournament will be held from July 23 to August 23 across five cities in India – Imphal, Shillong, Kokrajhar, Kolkata and Jamshedpur. Six group stage matches would be played at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, Imphal, from July 30 to August 12. He had stated that hosting this tournament in Imphal once again is a testament to the state's deep passion for football and the collective efforts of both the civil and military establishments. The Indian Army has consistently been a pillar of strength in promoting sports and youth engagement, he had said. During the July 10 ceremony, the trophies – Durand Cup, President's Cup and Simla Trophy were showcased. The trophies, after touring different locations in Manipur, including Sendra, Moirang, Bishnupur, Manipur University, Kangla and Chingmeirong War Cemetery, reached the City Convention Centre on July 10, where the Governor, along with senior civil and military officers, received the trophies. Jamshedpur beat Indian Army 1-0 to top Group C

Jamshedpur, July 29 (UNI) Sanan Mohammed's 52nd-minute strike handed Jamshedpur FC a gritty 1-0 win over Indian Army FT in their Group C clash at the 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup here at the JRD Tata Sports Complex today. This marked Jamshedpur's second consecutive victory in the group stage, taking them to six points from two matches and putting them firmly at the top of the group, with a place in the knockout stage now within touching distance. The match began with Indian Army dominating early exchanges. The Armymen could have been two goals up within the opening 15 minutes, with Samir Murmu's narrow miss and Samananda Singh's wide header both threatening the Jamshedpur goal. Army midfielders Lethaolen Khongsai and P Christopher Kamei controlled the tempo as the hosts struggled to assert themselves. Despite Indian Army's control, the Red Miners held firm, with goalkeeper Amrit Gope making key interventions, including a fingertip save to deny Army skipper B. Sunil just before the break. Khalid Jamil's tactical reshuffle after halftime paid immediate dividends. Substitutes V.P. Suhair and Nikhil Barla brought attacking verve, and in the 52nd minute, a long throw-in led to the breakthrough — Karthik Choudhary's header fell to Sanan Mohammed, who calmly chested the ball down and slotted it home past Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir. Although Indian Army continued to enjoy more possession and tested the Jamshedpur defence late in the game, including a powerful strike from Liton Shil that rattled the crossbar, they couldn't find the equaliser. Tensions flared in stoppage time when Army goalkeeper Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir was sent off for a last-man foul on Jayesh Rane outside the box. With no substitutes left, defender Samananda Singh donned the gloves for the final moments. Suhair nearly doubled Jamshedpur's lead with a late attempt that also struck the crossbar, but the solitary goal was enough for the hosts to seal the win and move closer to a spot in the quarterfinals. Sanan strike gives Jamshedpur FC second consecutive win

Sanan Mohammed's second half strike ensured Jamshedpur FC secure a 1-0 victory over Indian Army FT for their consecutive victory in Group C of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup which was played here at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. With this win Jamshedpur FC, have six points from two matches and are on top of the group, closer to a place in the knockout stages. Jamshedpur FC Head Coach Khalid Jamil made two changes to his starting line-up bringing in Karthik Choudhary and Sourav Das in place of Sarthak Goloui and Lalhriatpuia Chawngthu while Indian Army Head Coach Manish Wahi named an experienced starting eleven in a 4-3-3 formation with Rahul Ramakrishnan, Liton Shil, Shubham Rana and Samir Murmu, who debuted for Jamshedpur FC in the ISL last season, leading the attack. Indian Army dominated the first half of the game maintaining possession and creating the better chances. The Armymen could have taken a two goal lead inside the first 15 minutes but Samir Murmu's effort from a tight angle whisked past the far post and minutes later Samananda Singh glanced a header wide from a corner kick. Jamshedpur FC were finding it difficult to match up with the physicality of the Army side as they dominated the midfield with Lethaolen Khongsai and P. Christopher Kamei dictating the pace of the attacks. Samir came close once again to score as the striker pounced on a weak headed pass from Praful Kumar to the goalkeeper but his effort was blocked by the keeper Amrit Gope. On the other end, the Red Miners were using the long ball strategy and the usage of long throw ins to break down the Indian Army defence, without much success. Amrit Gope also made a fingertip save to deny Army captain b. Sunil's effort in added time of the first half to keep the scores level at the lemon break. Khalid Jamil made two changes at the start of the second half bringing in V.P Suhair and Nikhil Barla in place of Vincy Barretto and Pronay Halder to inject some energy going forward. The home side took the lead in the 52nd minute finishing a move which started from another long throw. Karthik Choudhary headed the ball back into the danger area and Sanan Mohammed chested the ball down and finished expertly past the diving Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir in goal. Jamshedpur had better control in the game after taking the lead even though Indian Army had the major share of possession and attempts on goal but there were very few shots on target that troubled the goalkeeper. The closest they came to score was when Liton Shil hit the crossbar with a thumping long ranger in the closing stages of the second half.
