
Was Health Equity Just A 'Hustle'? A Path Forward
The last five years ushered in a wave of performative urgency across the healthcare industry—a tidal surge of press releases, C-suite appointments, and purpose-driven campaigns declaring a new era of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). For many who have spent their careers in the trenches of health disparities work, it felt like a long-awaited reckoning—a rare window to push real, systemic change.
But now, with the political winds shifting and legal uncertainties clouding the DEI landscape, many of the loudest voices have gone eerily quiet. Initiatives are quietly being sunset. Equity teams are being dissolved. Former champions have disappeared from panels and podiums. What once appeared to be a movement now feels more like a marketing cycle that expired.
It's fair to ask: was health equity just the latest healthcare 'hustle'? Another badge for visibility? A convenient way to be on trend?
Many of the early warning signs were there: initiatives announced without infrastructure, funding that never materialized, and leadership roles created without authority or resources. DEI professionals were invited into rooms—but too often not given a voice. They were handed lofty titles, yet asked to color inside predetermined lines. Meanwhile, their organizations basked in applause for appearances, not results.
What happened? The generous interpretation is that legal and political pressures forced a change in strategy. But even that framing lets too many leaders off the hook. Because you can alter rhetoric without abandoning values. You can evolve your messaging without walking away from your mission. The truth is more uncomfortable: some organizations weren't ever serious about this work to begin with. They were renting values, not owning them.
Let's not sugarcoat this moment. Many health equity leaders feel betrayed. They feel used. And they're right to feel that way. Because what's at stake isn't just credibility—it's people's lives. Vulnerable communities that experience the harshest disparities in health outcomes don't have the luxury of waiting for politics to stabilize or organizational priorities to realign. So, where do we go from here?
1. Stay the Course—Even If the Spotlight Is Gone
Now is not the time to back down. In fact, real leaders will show themselves in what they do now , when the noise has died down and the easy accolades are gone. Organizations that meant what they said should continue to drive toward health equity goals however they are described—if necessary, under new language or frameworks. Call it quality. Call it population health. Call it patient-centeredness. But don't stop doing the work just because the branding changed. Leadership is not about doing what's popular—it's about doing what's right, even when it's uncomfortable.
2. Demand Accountability—for Past Commitments and Present Silence
We cannot normalize the kind of strategic amnesia now unfolding across healthcare. When organizations made bold pronouncements in 2020, they weren't just symbolic gestures—they were public commitments. And commitments matter. It's time to ask the uncomfortable questions: What happened to your health equity agenda? Why are your equity leaders gone? Where did the funding go?
Accountability can't just be a checkbox either. It must come from within—employees asking hard questions, boards demanding metrics, and media keeping score. But it should also come from the outside: regulators, ratings agencies, and partners should continue to weigh equity when evaluating organizational performance. We've long accepted metrics for financial health. Why not ethical health?
3. Integrate Equity into the Broader Healthcare Fix
The biggest opportunity we've missed is also our most urgent one: integrating the health equity conversation into broader healthcare reform. The same systemic issues—misaligned incentives, fragmented care, access barriers, clinician burnout—that fail everyone fail the most vulnerable people first and worst.
Equity isn't a separate issue. It's the canary in the coal mine .
Fixing equity and fixing healthcare are not competing goals—they are convergent ones. If we design a system that works for the most complex, marginalized patients, we design a system that is better for everyone.
A Final Word
So yes, some of what we saw over the past few years was performative. Some of it was opportunistic. Some of it was a hustle. But it wasn't for everyone and we can't afford to let our cynicism dictate the future. Because while some leaders may be done with health equity, health equity isn't done with us.
The disparities are still there. The patients are still suffering. The trust is still broken. And our obligation remains—especially if we want to call ourselves a just and compassionate healthcare system.
Real leadership in this moment isn't loud. It's consistent.
It's not in the spotlight. It's in the follow-through.
And it doesn't waver when the applause and recognition stops.

NHS maintained 93% of planned care during resident doctors' strikes
The NHS maintained care for an estimated 10,000 more patients during the latest doctors' strike compared with last year's industrial action. Early data shows that 93% of planned operations, tests and procedures went ahead during the five-day walkout across England. In previous walkouts, the majority of non-urgent care was postponed. Fewer than a third of resident doctors, previously known as junior doctors, chose to join the strike, which ended on Wednesday morning. The number was down by 7.5% (1,243) on the previous round of industrial action in July last year, according to the early analysis of management information collected by NHS England. NHS chief executive Sir James Mackey noted that care was still disrupted for thousands of people. He said: 'While this is really good news for the vast majority of patients whose treatment went ahead, we should still acknowledge that there were thousands whose care was disrupted. 'NHS staff will continue to work hard to ensure patients can get their rescheduled care as soon as possible, but for those patients – and for all our staff who had to work extra shifts or with different responsibilities – a repeat of this action will be unacceptable. 'So, I would urge the Resident Doctors Committee to get back to the negotiating table and work with us and the Government on the meaningful improvements we can make to resident doctors' working lives.' Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: 'I want to again thank staff from across the NHS who have put in an incredible shift to make sure that the NHS was open to as many patients as possible over the five days of unnecessary strike action.' Mr Streeting said earlier this week that he 'never left' the negotiating table, and that he is willing to meet with the resident doctors committee of the British Medical Association (BMA) to resume talks in their ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions. But he also warned that 'it should be clear to the BMA by now that it will lose a war with this Government'. NHS Providers, which represents hospital trusts, said the walkout took a toll and that trusts are concerned about potential wider industrial action in the health service. 'Even though trusts cancelled fewer appointments than before, the strike still took its toll on patients and an already stretched NHS,' Saffron Cordery, NHS Providers deputy chief executive, said. She said NHS trust leaders want to focus on improving services instead of dealing with strikes, which she said have set back progress in cutting waiting lists. She added: 'This dispute can't drag on. The union says resident doctors want this to be their last strike. With talks due to resume, let's hope so. Bringing disruptive strikes – where the only people being punished are patients – to an end must be a priority. 'We're concerned, as trusts worked hard to minimise disruption and to keep patients safe during the resident doctors' strike, by the threat of wider industrial action in the NHS.'

Pan-Mass Challenge ends first day in Bourne with cheers, celebration
A community of champions came together this weekend to take part in the Pan-Mass Challenge to find a cure for cancer. "I'm not a doctor so I can't cure cancer, but this is my way of doing something for those who can," Brenda Williams, from Team MAPFRE Insurance, said. From Sturbridge to Provincetown and all cities and town in between, more than 6,500 riders pedaled with purpose for the two-day event. One hundred percent of every rider-raised dollar goes to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to accelerate research and treatment. This year's riders come from 12 countries and 47 states and territories. Many are riding in honor of or in memory of a loved one with cancer. More than 1,000 riders and volunteers are also cancer survivors or patients themselves. At the water stop in Lakeville, pedal partners gathered with pediatric patients being treated at the Jimmy Fund Clinic who have come to cheer on the team. Tilly, 6½, was diagnosed with cancer when she was 2 years old. She has an inoperable tumor in her spine. "Go PMC," she shouted. The family has been part of the PMC long before she was diagnosed. "We cheered the riders on 10 years ago, when Tilly had no affiliation, and now, we cheer for them riding because we are now affected by cancer as well," Tilly's mom, Clair Storck, said. Tilly's dad, Josh Danoff, is proud of his daughter. "We were able to start a fund for Tilly at Dana-Farber that does research on spinal cord tumors, so the money that is raised goes to her fund," he said. This year is Chris Kay's third PMC. He and his team at M&T Bank crossed the finish line in Bourne. "Both my parents and all of my siblings suffered from cancer, and we lost a few of them. You know, I was riding for their courage." The ride will continue on Sunday to Provincetown

Doctors share tips to help with Minnesota air quality
As the air quality for Minnesota remains dangerous, experts are giving advice. "It's not a one-size-fits-all answer," said Dr. Andrew Stiehm MD, who's a pulmonologist for Allina Health. "I just reinforce stay inside. Pay attention to the air quality index." Steim adds it's okay to be outside, but it's the duration spent and intensity of your outdoor workout that you should be wary of. "It's hard when you have an event you can't avoid," he added. Open Streets is an event in Northeast Minneapolis on Saturday. A day when Minneapolis' air quality ranked as the 10th worst among the world's major cities, according to IQ Air. "I'm glad I don't live in Saskatchewan," said Minneapolis resident John Larkay who was attending Saturday's Open Streets event with his dog. Larkay said Saturday was a perfect day despite the air. "I've lived here for 25 years and this has been some of the more extreme smoke conditions." Here's how to know if conditions are getting to you. "Red, itchy, irritated eyes, watery eyes," said Stiehm. "The nose can be congested, runny. Sinus congestion, sore throat, cough and shortness of breath." Those symptoms won't happen to everyone. "Part of it starts off with your natural vulnerability," said Stiehm. "As an example, I have one child who's very allergic. For example, we tend to worry more about him going outside on days like this than some of my other children that are less allergic." "The particulate matter is a big deal for your respiratory health. It's really concerning," said Minneapolis resident Ethan Culver. When WCCO asked Stiehm what people can do other than staying inside, he said the N95 mask can work if you need to go outside and reaching out to your healthcare team if your asthma is acting up.
