
Talks to settle £120m legal claim against Vodafone end without success
The case was filed in December with the claimants accusing Vodafone of 'unjustly enriching' itself by implementing a series of cost-cutting tactics as the UK emerged from initial Covid-19 restrictions in 2020.
The drastic cuts to commission rates paid to franchisees were blamed for the small business owners running up huge personal debts and fearing for their livelihoods or homes, with some reporting suicidal thoughts.
A group of 62 of about 150 Vodafone franchise operators joined the legal claim against the telecoms company.
Vodafone has said it apologises 'unreservedly to anyone whose experiences while operating their business has impacted [their health] in this way' and added that 'where issues have been raised, we have sought to rectify these and we believe we have treated our franchisees fairly'.
The opposing sides had been engaging in a series of mediation talks, but they failed to come to an agreement.
A spokesperson for the claimants said: 'As a group, we entered into the mediation process with the best intentions. We are extremely frustrated that the process failed to resolve this dispute, which would have allowed both parties to move on.
'Our group was formed because Vodafone's decisions have caused significant and direct harm to the individuals' businesses and lives. We will now continue our efforts to seek justice through the court process. We remain absolutely committed to securing redress and accountability for everyone affected.'
Margherita Della Valle, the chief executive of the Vodafone group, said that despite the initial talks failing to end the dispute, the company intends to engage in further discussions.
'The commercial dispute is specifically between Vodafone UK and some of our franchisees,' she said, delivering the company's results for the year to the end of March. 'Our first joint attempt at mediation has not resolved the dispute despite our best engagement. We remain open to further discussions as the process continues.'
Vodafone, which reported an annual pre-tax loss of €1.5bn (£1.26bn) due to non-cash write-downs at its struggling German and Romanian operations, is in the process of completing a deal to merge its UK operation with rival Three to create the UK's biggest mobile phone operator.
She said that the merger will involve job cuts where the two businesses have a duplication of functions and roles, although overall it will create jobs as it embarks on an €11bn upgrade and expansion of its 5G network over the next decade.
'Across the two companies there will inevitably be some overlaps that will create synergies [job cuts],' she said. 'However, overall we expect the merger to create jobs in the UK.

'From a pure headcount perspective the reduction that comes from overlaps between two companies will be more than compensated in [new jobs due to] network build implications. It will be positive in terms of employment.'
Vodafone said that its turnaround plan for its biggest market, Germany, which has lost customers due to a change in pay-TV laws, is nearing its end as the group now plans for 'growth acceleration'.
She also said that while the newly announced UK-EU trade deal would not impact its operations directly the better cooperation across Europe would only prove beneficial for infrastructure companies.
'Think about telecoms being critical national infrastructure,' she said. 'It is important for our companies to have scale and good levels of investment. It is also important given the geopolitical environment that the UK and Europe have good security and resilience in that critical infrastructure.
'In that sense cooperation between the UK and Europe will benefit from increased cooperation.'

Business confidence at highest level in eight months, RBS finds
Business confidence has risen to its highest level in eight months, according to a Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) survey. The private sector also saw its strongest rise in activity since November, the bank's growth tracker found. Overall, the combined output of Scotland's manufacturing and service sectors rose from a score of 50.5 in May to 50.9 in June. It marks the second consecutive monthly rise in business activity. RBS said that while the uptick was modest overall, it was the strongest since November 2024. The growth was driven entirely by the services sector with new project funding and a rise in demand underscoring the uptick. Manufacturing continued to fall sharply, the tracker found. Overall, business confidence improved to its highest level of optimism in eight months. Judith Cruickshank, chair of the One Bank Scotland Board, said: 'Scotland's private sector recorded a sustained uptick in activity at the end of the second quarter, with growth predominantly driven by service providers. 'In contrast, the manufacturing sector faced a challenging demand environment, leading to overall declines in new business and production. 'Despite these sectoral differences, firms exhibited increased optimism about the future, with manufacturers reporting positive growth forecasts for the first time in three months. 'In June, private sector firms encountered sharply rising operating costs, but selling price inflation slowed notably. This suggests a willingness among businesses to absorb some costs to bolster sales. 'The employment landscape remained broadly stable compared to the previous month, with sector data continuing to highlight diverging trends between manufacturers and service providers.' The UK as a whole saw output growth rise to a nine-month high, the tracker found, driven by expansions in business activity across eight of the 12 nations and regions monitored by the survey. Companies in Scotland recorded a ninth successive monthly fall in incoming new orders during June. The reduction in new work was centred on the manufacturing sector as services firms reported another expansion. UK-wide, new business rose for the first time in seven months. In Scotland, private sector companies remained optimistic about the year-ahead for activity in June. The degree of positive sentiment rose for a third straight month to the highest since October but was weaker than that recorded for the UK as a whole. Confidence across Scotland was supported by plans to introduce new product lines, improved operational performance, and strategic marketing efforts, the survey found. And after a slight rise in employment in May, Scotland's workforce numbers were broadly unchanged in June. Services firms reported increases in staffing levels amid upturns in new business and activity. However, this was offset by another month of job shedding at manufacturers. A near universal fall in headcounts was also recorded across the 12 monitored UK regions and nations, with Northern Ireland being the sole exception. Among the remaining areas, Scotland experienced the least pronounced drop in employment and one that was only 'fractional', RBS said. Since mid-2024, Scottish firms have continued to record a drop in backlogs of work, although June's rate of depletion was the weakest in eight months. RBS said that the fall is driven by a lack of orders in manufacturing which has allowed firms to complete outstanding orders. According to the survey, Scottish firms signalled another marked increase in average input costs during June. It found the rate of inflation quickened from May and was 'historically elevated'. Survey respondents often reported higher costs for materials, labour and energy, as well as rising supplier prices. However, the rise was less pronounced in Scotland compared to the UK as a whole. Firms north of the order also raised their output prices at a reduced rate in June. RBS described said the latest increase in charges was 'solid' but still amounted to the slowest rate in 11 months and was similar to the UK-wide average. Where higher charges were recorded, they were primarily attributed to the pass-through of increased operating expenses to customers.

‘Shovel-ready' renewables prioritised as grid connections queue gets shake-up
New 'shovel-ready' wind and solar farms will be prioritised to connect to the grid, operators said as they kickstarted moves to shake up the gridlocked connections queue. The existing first-come, first-served approach to the grid connections queue, which operators say has led to unviable and speculative schemes holding up clean energy projects that are ready to plug in, has been scrapped. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) said it was opening a three-week application window on Tuesday for more than 5,000 energy generation and demand projects in the queue to submit evidence to support their connection to the grid as it undertakes a major reordering of the system. The new plan will see clean energy projects that can be up and running by 2030 prioritised, in a bid to help Labour hit its goal to near fully powering the country with clean electricity by the end of the decade, and to boost economic growth. Neso said the connections queue had grown tenfold in just five years, and currently stands at 738 gigawatts (GW) – more than four times the amount of clean energy generation that is required by 2030 to meet Government goals. The assessment process, which will prioritise projects on the basis of how ready they are and alignment with the UK's clean energy goals, aims to connect the 170 GW of power needed by 2030. Kayte O'Neill, chief operating officer, National Energy System Operator, said: 'Neso opening the evidence window today is a key moment in the once-in-a-lifetime transformation of our electricity network, and a vital step for delivering clean power by 2030, while also helping supercharge economic growth for Great Britain. 'By prioritising agreements for projects that are critical and shovel-ready, developers will get the certainty they need to support investment decisions. 'It also gives energy consumers, from households and hospitals to electric car charging stations and data centres, the confidence of clean and stable power for generations to come. 'We advise all applicants to ensure they submit the correct evidence, so that we can assess applications fully and fairly.' Energy minister Michael Shanks said: 'Today marks a milestone in our work to overhaul the connections queue and unleash ready-to-go clean power projects that will help us reach our 2030 target. ' Developers in the queue now have the chance to demonstrate to Neso that their projects are ready to progress.' He added the move would take Britain closer to an energy system that takes the country 'off the rollercoaster of global fossil fuel markets and can bring bills down for good'. Applicants in the queue have until July 29 to submit evidence, with those meeting the criteria placed in a 'gate 2' queue and receiving an updated connection offer, prioritising those due to connect in 2026 and 2027. Neso said it aims to have made all offers for projects needed to meet the 2030 goals by early next year. Those who do not meet the criteria will get a 'gate 1' offer, remaining in the system but without a connection date. They can reapply through future biannual application windows or withdraw their scheme.

Ministers in talks with City over climate finance for disaster-hit nations
Senior Cabinet ministers including Rachel Reeves and David Lammy are to meet City chiefs for talks on how to unlock UK private sector climate finance and disaster risk insurance for countries facing extreme weather events. The Foreign Secretary has pledged £12 million from the Government's tightened aid budget in a bid to enable faster payouts for nations experiencing climate shocks like hurricanes and tornadoes. Mr Lammy will join the Chancellor, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Environment Secretary Steve Reed for the first meeting between multiple Cabinet ministers and finance leaders on Tuesday. The group is expected to discuss how the sector can play a part in channelling investment into climate initiatives in emerging markets. The Government hopes the £12 million for pre-arranged finance for disaster relief and risk insurance will cut the cost of responding to extreme weather events, and the time it takes for countries to recover from such shocks. This funding is triggered by certain warning signs — such as a forecast or weather event itself — to enable faster payouts, the Foreign Office said. It comes after the Government slashed the UK's overseas aid budget from 0.5% of gross national income to 0.3% in order to pay for increased defence spending. The UK's climate finance commitments come from its aid budget. The Foreign Secretary said: 'The climate and nature crisis is the greatest global challenge we face. Failure to act will cause unprecedented environmental damage, fuelling displacement, conflict and famine. 'Tackling this crisis is also a huge opportunity for people and businesses here in the UK, delivering on our Plan for Change. The green sector is worth trillions of pounds, and I'm determined that we seize on the economic growth, jobs and security it offers. 'The City of London, the world's leading sustainable development financing hub, has a crucial role to play in this.'
