TRA to launch business caller ID; telecom sector revenues up 4%
The announcement was made during TRA's annual media briefing on Wednesday held under the theme 'Investing in Opportunities and Accelerating the Building of an Enhanced Digital Society' which reviewed the authority's 2024 achievements across the telecom and postal sectors.
Omar bin Hamdan al Ismaili, CEO of TRA, said new regulations would soon be issued to ensure accuracy of billing systems used by telecom operators in the sultanate.
Presenting key figures for the sectors, Ismaili said mobile subscriptions grew 7% in 2024 to 7.5mn, while Internet of Things (IoT) subscriptions surged 72% to 1.1mn. Fixed broadband subscriptions increased 2% and the number of 5G stations rose 12%.
A total of 6,500 telecom towers have been upgraded from 3G to 4G and 5G, and an additional 545 5G stations are expected to be built this year, taking the total to 5,856 – a 13% annual increase.
High-speed fixed broadband now covers 90% of residential units, with 97% of public schools also connected. Ismaili confirmed that all public schools in Oman now have full Internet coverage.
The telecom sector generated approximately RO920mn in revenues in 2024, up 4% compared to 2023. Revenues from the postal sector increased 3% to RO27.2mn.
Ismaili said the revenue growth reflects broader economic expansion and diversification of services. The number of companies licensed to provide telecom services rose 9% to 24, while those authorised to offer such services grew 63% to 399 with 72% of these being SMEs.
In the postal sector, the number of licensed operators increased 21% to 74 companies, 80% of which are SMEs. Incoming international postal shipments surged 60% in 2024 to 3.2mn.
Omanisation rates in the sectors remained high – 93% in telecom and 71% in postal services.
Ismaili noted that TRA secured a leading position among government service institutions for digital transformation, and that Oman advanced 26 places to rank 22nd globally in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Index. The sultanate also ranks among the world's top 28 nations for average mobile data download speed.

Muscat: The second edition of an international conference titled 'Emerging Technologies in Multidisciplinary Fields' kicked off in Muscat on Tuesday under the auspices of HH Sayyid Nadir bin Al Julanda al Said, Secretary-General at the Diwan of Royal Court. The conference explores the role of emerging technologies in developing higher education and shaping the future of universities with the context of digital transition and is being attended by 35 local and international specialists who exchange views about issues related to emerging technology in the field of education and the latest trends in modern technology applications. Dr Hamoud bin Amer al Wardi, Dean of Mazoon College and the Conference Chair, highlighted Oman's firm commitment to digital transformation. 'The government has positioned digital transformation and emerging technologies as core pillars to advance strategic and vital sectors. This national direction is clearly reflected in Oman Vision 2040, which carries ambitious goals for building a modern digital society and a thriving knowledge-based economy,' he stated. He emphasised that the conference represents a tangible embodiment of these national efforts. 'Over the course of two days, more than 35 local and international specialists will share their expertise in applying emerging digital technologies to education and explore the latest global trends in this dynamic field,' he said. The tasks of the conference include five sessions. The first session discusses the future of digital applications, artificial intelligence (AI), financial innovation and visions in Omani higher education institutions. The second session highlights the digital transition in education and human-based AI solutions. The third session explores solutions of innovative learning, notably through the integration of AI, the Internet of Things and virtual environments. The fourth session explores technology, ethics and innovation in the digital age. The fifth session focuses on the role of AI in linguistics and educational narratives, from classrooms to gaming consoles. In addition, the conference will include a review of AI applications in industry, security and storytelling. Three virtual sessions will be held as part of the conference. They will be titled as follows: 'Strategic Transformation from Green Competencies to Smart Decision-Making"; "Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0 and Advanced Intelligence Systems for Resilience, Security and Interoperability" and "Digital Transition and Human-based Innovation in Health, Justice and Markets". On the sidelines of the conference, a student exhibition is being held. The exhibition showcases specialised projects and highlights student innovations and practical applications of emerging technologies in various fields, including humanities, information technology, business administration, economics and English language studies.

Illegal Internet sales can lead to RO50,000 fine and/or jail: TRA
Muscat – Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has warned against the growing practice of individuals illegally distributing and selling Internet services, stating that it poses serious risks to network stability and undermines investment in the telecommunications sector. Speaking to a local radio station, Al Muatasim al Ghazali, Director of Frequencies Monitoring and Inspection Department at TRA, said such practices are a clear violation of the Telecommunications Regulatory Law. He explained that some individuals subscribe to Internet services from licensed operators and then redistribute them to neighbours, relatives or nearby shops without obtaining legal permission. 'This results in unauthorised networks that cause radio interference, which in turn weakens Internet quality and speed.' Ghazali noted that these illegal activities not only affect the quality of services provided but also cause direct financial loss to licensed operators, impacting their ability to maintain a stable and reliable digital infrastructure across the sultanate. Violators could face imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to RO50,000. Ghazali added that TRA has developed advanced monitoring systems in cooperation with licensed service providers to detect and trace unauthorised networks. He called on the public to report such violations, stressing the importance of compliance with the law to safeguard service quality, protect national investments, and ensure a secure and equitable technological environment for all.
