PM Madbouli inspects pilot operation of BRT 1st phase
CAIRO - 17 May 2025: Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli inspected on Saturday the pilot operation of the first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on the Ring Road.
The premier was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel el Wazir.
During the visit, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouli said he inspected the trial run of the first phase of the BRT on the Ring Road, a project that was considered a "dream" and serves citizens.
What is the BRT project?
The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is being implemented by the Ministry of Transport, as an alternative to the fifth metro line that operates on the ring road. The BRT will also be an alternative to the microbus. A service road will be constructed to connect the microbus stops and the new bus stations.
The project is being implemented in two phases, with 49 stations on the ring road, at a cost of approximately EGP 9.5 billion.
The project aims to operate 100 electric buses along the road, and they will be connected to other means of transportation, including service stop points under the ring road, in addition to other means of transportation such as the metro, trains, and superjet.

1,000 Illegal Miners Arrested in Gold Mine Crackdown in South Africa
Israa Farhan South African authorities have detained nearly 1,000 undocumented foreign nationals for illegal mining activities at the historic Sheba Gold Mine in Mpumalanga province, police confirmed on Friday. The arrests were made as part of a large-scale security operation known as Operation Vala Umgodi, targeting illicit mining near the town of Barberton, close to the borders with Eswatini and Mozambique. According to police, those apprehended had been working underground without legal documentation and now face charges related to immigration violations and illegal mining. Authorities also indicated that some of the detainees may be underage. The week-long operation marks one of the most extensive crackdowns on illegal mining in recent years, with law enforcement warning that further arrests are likely. Barberton Mines, the owner of Sheba Gold Mine, has welcomed the action, stating that illegal mining severely undermines safety and economic stability. Sheba, one of South Africa's oldest and most lucrative gold mines, dates back to the 1880s and played a pivotal role in the country's gold rush. Despite remaining operational, the site has been plagued by theft and soaring operational costs, prompting efforts to restructure and secure its assets. Illegal miners, often referred to locally as zama-zamas, operate in both abandoned and active mines using rudimentary methods. Many are migrants from neighboring countries, while others are South African nationals who turned to illegal mining amid economic hardship. South Africa is home to about 6,000 abandoned mines, many of which have become hubs for unlawful mining operations. Tourism Minister says Egypt will never stop demanding the return of its antiquities from abroad
Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy announced on Monday that the state, represented by various bodies, will never stop demanding the return of its antiquities abroad – particularly the Rosetta Stone in the British Museum in London and the bust of Queen Nefertiti in the Berlin Museum in Germany. Fathy explained, during the launch of the first online platform for tourism and antiquities training in Egypt, that many measures are being taken in this longstanding issue, which have been criticized by citizens despite being commong practice in museums globally. 'What will visitors do when they will have to wait two hours to see Tutankhamun at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) after the official opening?' Fathy noted ticket prices for the Grand Egyptian Museum were determined based on numerous studies, and that museum visits should be proportionate between Egyptian and foreign visitors. There are discounts for multiple categories, he added, in addition to free entry for other categories, such as daily school trips. Fathy added that ticket prices are comparable to other products, and that the gap between ticket prices for Egyptians and foreigners will not be too great. With the official opening of GEM, he noted that visitors will not be able to enter at their preferred times due to the large turnout.

UAE Becomes Zimbabwe's Leading Export Market in June 2025
Rana Atef The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became Zimbabwe's leading export market in June 2025. It had more than half of the country's total export value, according to figures released by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT). New Ziana and TV BRICS reported this. The UAE snapped up a dominant 54.8 percent, followed by South Africa with 23.5 percent and China with 8.3 percent. Together, the three countries made up approximately 87 per cent of Zimbabwe's total exports for the month. Among the top export commodities were semi-processed gold (53.6 per cent) and nickel mattes (12.7 per cent). Zimbabwe's exports also reached markets in regional blocs such as Southern African Development Community (SADC), The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Within SADC, nickel mattes dominated exports at 42 per cent, followed by coal products (8.8 per cent), semi-processed gold (7.9 per cent), and chromium ores (5.8 per cent). Exports to COMESA were led by iron and steel products (18.6 per cent) and coal-based coke and semi-coke (10.5 per cent).
