NBRI spray to keep bouquet flowers fresh for longer span

Time of India21-05-2025
Lucknow: How about the cut flowers we decorate in vases at our home, or the bouquets we give to loved ones stay fresh for days?
FloriGuard, a special spray developed by CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, has the potential of increasing the shelf life depending on the variety.
For example, the spray will double the shelf life of Chrysanthemum while tripling the life and freshness of Gerbera cut flowers.
The technology of the spray has been transferred to a Pune-based private firm for its production, and it was launched for the public on Friday.
"NBRI-FloriGuard is a herbal spray that acts as a natural/herbal preservative solution that effectively extends the lifespan of cut flowers through multiple mechanisms.
The formulation works by suppressing ethylene-producing genes, which significantly reduces the overall ethylene production in flowers. This reduction ranges between 33-56%, thereby slowing down the natural ageing process of cut flowers," said NBRI principal scientist BN Singh, who is credited with developing the product.
He said that the spray contains active compounds that strengthen the flower's natural defence system against harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS).

By enhancing the flowers' inherent antioxidant mechanisms, it protects against cellular damage and deterioration. The formulation is particularly effective in preventing common problems associated with cut flowers. It reduces premature falling of petals, maintains moisture balance, and prevents unsightly brown spots on petals and leaves.
The spray ensures that flowers retain their natural shape and structure for a longer duration, he added.
NBRI director Ajit Kumar Shahsany said, "NBRI in its mission encompasses scientific research, knowledge dissemination, and societal benefit by giving best herbal products to society along with our consistent initiatives like pollution remediation, climate adaptation, and plant improvement to benefit common man."
The technology of another product, a herbal floor disinfectant and cleaner (floormop), and a herbal nano serum was also transferred to a Gurugram-based firm on the occasion.
"We have developed a water-soluble plant-based floor disinfectant," said Singh.

Govt to start AI-driven maternal, child health monitoring systems in Rayagada

1 2 Koraput: In a first-of-its-kind initiative for tribal Odisha, the state govt is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven maternal and child health monitoring systems in Rayagada district. The pilot project is aimed at reducing the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) in one of the state's most vulnerable regions. According to officials in the health and family welfare department, the pilot will deploy AI-based diagnostic kits to monitor the health of pregnant women throughout the gestation period. These kits, already cleared after successful trials, will be used by frontline healthcare workers to detect early signs of complications ensuring timely intervention and improved health outcomes. Rayagada has historically faced challenges in maternal and child healthcare due to its difficult terrain and poor connectivity. "By bringing AI into the fold, we aim to bridge the gap between rural patients and quality healthcare," said a senior health department official involved in the project. The AI-enabled system is designed to track the physical and cognitive development of the foetus from the earliest stages. The kits will also enable real-time screening and generate instant health reports, which can be shared remotely with doctors for expert consultation. Prafulla Padhi, a senior gynaecologist at Rayagada district headquarters hospital, said, "We have come to know about the government's plan to launch AI tools in the district, although formal instructions are yet to be received. It's a welcome step that can help us detect risks early and reduce complications during delivery." The initiative plans to equip Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and other field workers with smartphones and training. They will be taught to operate the AI kits, collect health data, and upload it to a centralised software system. The system will then analyse the data using machine learning algorithms and provide personalised health assessments for each pregnant woman. Officials said the AI kits are designed to be user-friendly and can be operated by health workers with minimal training. The goal is to empower the ground-level teams with smart tools that improve efficiency and coverage. "Technology can be a game-changer for inclusive healthcare. With the help of the AI kit, more patients can be treated in less time, and those in serious condition can receive immediate medical attention," said PK Mishra, additional district medical and public health officer, Rayagada. As per SRS MMR bulletin-2018-20, Odisha MMR now stands at 119. (deaths per one lakh mothers). Odisha's IMR is 36 (deaths per 1000 births). According to health department data, Rayagada's MMR is 170 and IMR 33.

250 lives saved in Mys through Jeevasarthakathe organ donation initiative

Mysuru: In the past year, Jeevasarthakathe, the organ donation programme, saved 250 lives in Mysuru district. The district health department retrieved organs from 25 brain-dead donors, enabling life-saving transplants for patients in need. Officials say awareness and coordination steadily improved under the state's health mission. The state govt introduced the scheme in 1994 with the intention to address organ transplantation and provide a second chance of life for individuals suffering from end-stage organ disease. The Jeevasarthakathe scheme aims to create an efficient system for organ and tissue procurement from deceased donors and ensure the distribution of organs after obtaining necessary permission. With Jeevasarthakathe coordination, organs or tissues from a deceased or brain-dead person (the donor) are transplanted to another person (recipient) for the replacement of damaged and failed organs after surgical removal. A brain-dead or cardiac death, living persons can donate nine to ten types of organs, including kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestine. Corneas can restore sight, heart valves, skin can help burn victims and skin grafts, and bones can be used for reconstructive surgery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo A brain-dead person can save the lives of 10 to 12 individuals by donating organs, officials stated. Apart from these, people of all ages, including children and the elderly, can donate organs. The department of health carried out organ retrieval processes under the supervision of Jeevasarthakathe coordinators. Speaking to TOI, district surveillance officer Dr M Nagaraju said the Jeevasarthakathe scheme saved the lives of 250 individuals in the last year in Mysuru district. The department is also spreading awareness among people about the importance of donating organs to save the lives of those suffering from chronic organ diseases at all its hospitals by conducting workshops in schools and educational institutions. "We are also taking help from corporates and non-govt organisations involved in the promotion of health and family welfare activities as well as organ donor activities," he said. People who want to donate organs must register their names on the official website of Jeevasarthakathe, which was launched by the department of health. They can also register offline by visiting the district surveillance office of the department of health and family welfare and at govt-run hospitals for registration of organ donation, officials said.
