As NIA says Pahalgam attackers from Pak, Congress questions govt

Indian Express23-06-2025
The Congress on Monday targeted the Central government and asked if there was a 'major lapse' in the probe into the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.
'Major lapse in Pahalgam terror attack probe? Soon after the Pahalgam attack, the Modi government hastily released sketches of three alleged terrorists. But now, according to a report by The Indian Express, none of the individuals in those sketches were involved in the attack,' the party said in a post on its official X account.
The Indian Express on Monday reported that the arrest of two Kashmiri locals for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack has led the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conclude that all three attackers were from Pakistan.
The breakthrough is a departure from what was previously believed about the identities of the attackers. Two days after the Pahalgam attack, the J&K Police had released three sketches — of Pakistan nationals Hashim Musa and Ali Bhai alias Talha, and Kashmir resident Adil Hussain Thoker. Sources in Central agencies now say the three men in the sketches are not the Pahalgam attackers.
'In fact, the sketches were reportedly based on a photo recovered from the phone of a terrorist named Junaid, who was killed on 4 December 2024—months before the attack even occurred,' the Congress post said.
This, the party said, 'raises serious questions', including why there was 'such negligence in investigating a brutal terrorist attack'.
'Were these fake sketches part of a headline management strategy by the Modi government—more about optics than real action?' the party wrote. 'How were these sketches released without proper verification? Was there external pressure on the police to act in haste?'.

Tejashwi targets electoral roll revision exercise — ‘Ruining Bihar's roti-beti ties with Nepal'

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Bihar 's Leader of Opposition has accused the Narendra Modi government of 'ruining' the familial and kinship ties between Bihar and Nepal – a remark that comes amid speculations of Nepalese and Bangladeshi nationals being found in the state's electoral rolls. The speculations come at a time when Bihar is conducting the Special Intensive Revision – an exercise of updating its electoral rolls. The voter enumeration exercise, which requires even existing electors enrolled after 2003 to provide documentary proof to establish their date or place of birth to determine citizenship, has drawn criticism from Opposition and other critics on the ground that it could 'disenfranchise' lakhs of people. In a post on X, Yadav, a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, said the state had a 'roti-beti relationship with Nepal', referring to the state's longstanding familial and kinship ties with Nepal. He goes on to say: 'Bihar shares a 600-km open border with Nepal. Gorkhas, citizens from Nepal serve in the Indian Army and are employed in Bihar Military Police. Recruitment drives are promoted in Nepal, urging people to join our army. With its narrow-minded approach, the Modi government is even ruining relations with our neighbouring country, Nepal'. Yadav also questioned the timing and intent behind the speculations, saying: 'Ever since the Supreme Court took cognisance of the matter (SIR) and advised the Election Commission, they seem rattled. Why doesn't Mr. Gyanesh Kumar (Chief Election Commissioner) come forward and clarify everything? Since they have nothing substantial to say, they are simply pointing to fake voters?' He went on to allege: 'If there are indeed fake voters in Bihar, who's responsible? It is the Election Commission and the NDA government. For the past 20 years in Bihar and 11 years at the Centre, the BJP-NDA have been in power. If any foreign nationals have crossed our borders, obtained Indian citizenship or have their names on the voter rolls, the responsibility lies with Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and their government. The security of the nation and the state falls under their jurisdiction'. The last Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll took place in 2003 under the previous United Progressive Alliance government, he said. 'Since then, there have been several elections, including three general elections where the BJP secured big wins in Bihar. Many years have passed, and we've seen several elections — including Modi's election victories in 2014, 2019, and now 2024. So, are they saying that, when we lost by 3-4 lakh votes, it was the foreigners who voted for Modi?' he wondered.

Rahul voices concern over law & order, attacks govt

Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Bihar govt, claiming the state has turned into India's "crime capital" under CM Nitish Kumar 's leadership. His remarks came amid growing concerns over a spike in violent crimes across the state. Posting on social media platform X, Gandhi cited media reports highlighting 31 murders in just 11 days and alleged the rise of a "contract killing industry" in Bihar. His post, written in Hindi, painted a grim picture of the state's current situation: "Fear lurks in every alley, unease pervades every home while unemployed youth are being transformed into killers." He did not hold back in his criticism of both the CM and the BJP. Gandhi alleged that Nitish was more focused on preserving his power than addressing the state's law and order crisis. "The CM is busy protecting his chair and BJP ministers are busy collecting commission," he claimed. The Congress MP argued that the upcoming assembly elections were not just about political change but about saving Bihar from a dangerous descent into lawlessness. "This election is not just about changing the government. It is about saving Bihar," he wrote. His remarks gained traction following the murder of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead outside his Patna home on July 4. Khemka's son had also been murdered seven years earlier in Hajipur. The incident has become emblematic of what opposition leaders describe as a breakdown in public safety. Gandhi's comments reflect a rising chorus of concern over Bihar's security situation. Opposition parties say the combination of soaring crime rates and "administrative inaction" has created a climate of fear with residents feeling vulnerable.

Maharashtra govt wants Public Security Act to supress common man, says Congress state chief

Mumbai: MPCC president Harshawardhan Sapkal on Monday said CM Devendra Fadnavis's claim that the Public Security Act has been introduced to eliminate urban Naxalism is laughable. "This law is draconian inside and out and is meant to suppress the common people. Therefore, the Congress party has opposed it from the very beginning," Sapkal said. Sapkal said despite the ruling party having passed the bill using their majority in the assembly, the Congress-led opposition remains strong and there will be symbolic burning of the new legislation across the state. "Those who have grabbed land in Dharavi, looted mineral resources in Surajagad and want red carpet access for the Shaktipeeth highway," Sapkal said.
