Boko Haram's resurgence: Why Nigeria's military is struggling to hold the line

Washington Post26-05-2025
ABUJA, Nigeria — A resurgence of Boko Haram attacks is shaking Nigeria's northeast, as Islamic extremists have repeatedly overrun military outposts, mined roads with bombs, and raided civilian communities since the start of the year, raising fears of a possible return to peak Boko Haram-era insecurity despite the military's claims of successes.

Leaked memo from Hegseth's brother calls for US army to help with deportations nationwide ‘for years to come': report

A leaked memo from the Department of Homeland Security suggests that the Trump administration is considering using the U.S. military to boost its ongoing mass deportation agenda, while acknowledging the deployment of troops in Los Angeles earlier this year wasn't 'perfect,' according to a new report. The memo was allegedly written by DHS senior adviser Phil Hegseth, the brother of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The New Republic published the texts on Saturday. President Donald Trump has already used U.S. military personnel in his aggressive deportation campaign. In June, Trump nationalized approximately 5,000 National Guard members and sent them to LA to push back against protesters demonstrating against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement raids in their neighborhoods. In addition to the National Guard members, Trump also sent 700 U.S. Marines to the city to stomp out the "violent insurrectionist mob." Most of the military members sent to LA have since been pulled out of the city. The DHS memo outlines a June 21 meeting between senior DHS and Pentagon officials, according to The New Republic, and suggests that U.S. military members will be needed to carry out Trump's deportation efforts for "years to come." Top level officials from both agencies, including Hegseth and acting ICE commissioner Todd Lyons, were listed as participants, the outlet reported. The memo advises departments on how they can "better plan for national security and illegal immigration" via three action items, including utilizing the Pentagon's "nationwide operational planning capabilities." "The U.S. military leadership (the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and NORTHCOM) need to feel — for the first time — the urgency of the homeland defense mission. They need to understand the threat, what's at stake, and the political importance the administration has placed on this issue," the memo reads. Later in the memo, it acknowledges that the troop deployment to LA didn't go the way the Trump administration had hoped. It does suggest that they are expecting similar operations to be carried out in the future, however. 'Everyone here is also aware of our joint work in L.A.,' it states. 'It hasn't been perfect, and we're still working through best practices together, but I think it's a good indicator of the type of operations (and resistance) we're going to be working through for years to come.' The Independent has requested comment from the Department of Homeland Security.

Pentagon Snub Rattles Cybersecurity Conference Circuit

A Pentagon move to pull its officials out of a policy think tank event is sending a chill across the cybersecurity trade-show circuit, where senior military and national security leaders often appear as keynote speakers and panelists. By barring its officials from participating in cybersecurity conferences, the Defense Department would imperil critical threat-intelligence sharing between public and private cybersecurity experts, among other issues, event organizers, vendors and attendees say.

Person arrested for throwing sex toy onto WNBA court, league says

A person has been arrested for throwing a sex toy onto the court of a WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream earlier this week, the league announced Saturday via the San Francisco Chronicle's Marisa Ingemi. The incident was the first of two to hit the WNBA this week, with a second green toy landing at the court of another Valkyries road game against the Chicago Sky on Friday. Per the Chronicle, that toy was thrown by a person different from the one in Atlanta. In addition to criminal charges, the WNBA promised immediate ejection and a minimum one-year ban for anyone who throws an object onto the court. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The league's statement, via the Chronicle: 'Any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities,' the league wrote. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. … The subject involved in the incident in Atlanta on Tuesday has been arrested.' Security officials were reportedly spotted questioning fans at the 200 level of the Sky's Wintrust Arena on Friday, so the league or authorities could be in the process of identifying that fan as well. Video of both incidents have gone viral on social media, with even some WNBA players joking about the ridiculous situation. Others, however, have denounced the action as dangerous and demeaning, including Sky center Elizabeth Williams, per the Chicago Tribune: 'It's super disrespectful,' Sky center Elizabeth Williams said after the Valkyries' 73-66 victory. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' And Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini, per the Associated Press: "I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous," Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said after Tuesday's game. "And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in. We stayed concentrated." Others have spoken out on social media: Sex toys being thrown onto the field of play isn't completely unprecedented, but the circumstances were vastly different in the most notable example, where the Buffalo Bills fans have thrown them in games against the New England Patriots.
